Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on European Surveys: Compiled Under the Directions of C. B. Comstock, Major of Engineers, Bvt; Brig. Gen., U. S. A., Being Appendix H H (in Part) Of the Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers for 1876 Numerous manuscripts, books, and maps relating to European sur veys were sent to me by the Engineer Department in 1875 and 1876, for examination and report. They were carefully looked over, abstracts were made of such as were deemed most important, and these were, from time to time, forwarded to the Engineer Department for its use. Subsequently, it was deemed advisable to print them, that their infor mation might become more generally available. It should be remem bered that they are mainly memoranda for those familiar with such work, derived from data at hand. Considered as accounts of surveys in different countries, they necessarily have many imperfections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Violence Against Women written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Violence against women undermines women's core fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. For example, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15; one in five women has experienced stalking; every second woman has been confronted with one or more forms of sexual harassment. What emerges is a picture of extensive abuse that affects many women's lives but is systematically underreported to the authorities. The scale of violence against women is therefore not reflected by official data. This FRA survey is the first of its kind on violence against women across the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU). It is based on interviews with 42,000 women across the EU, who were asked about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including incidents of intimate partner violence ('domestic violence'). The survey also included questions on stalking, sexual harassment, and the role played by new technologies in women's experiences of abuse. In addition, it asked about their experiences of violence in childhood. Based on the detailed findings, FRA suggests courses of action in different areas that are touched by violence against women and go beyond the narrow confines of criminal law, ranging from employment and health to the medium of new technologies."--Editor.

Download or read book Future of Europe written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of?Future of Europe? surveys have been conducted in the EU Member States since 2006. These surveys explore the way Europeans perceive the EU, including its assets, values and their opinions about Europe's influence in the world. The most recent survey was conducted in September - October 2016. The current survey was designed to investigate, for the first time, the opinion of those living in 11 countries located outside the European Union. Respondents were asked how they view the European Union, what they think its assets and values are, and how much political influence they think it has. This report is divided into two chapters: The first chapter considers respondents' views of the EU's main assets, its values and its place in the world. Views about the current political influence of the EU are also considered. The second chapter focusses on perceptions about life in these other countries, in particular, views about globalisation, social protection and citizens' opportunities to succeed in life. In most cases the questions asked are the same as those used for previous?Future of Europe? reports, so where possible results for the EU as a whole will be provided in comparison. However, it should be noted that surveys done in the EU follow the Special Eurobarometer methodology (face-to-face surveys at respondents' homes) while the present Flash Eurobarometer survey is carried out by telephone, except in India. Therefore, a certain level of caution should be observed while comparing results obtained through different methodologies. Between 20th and 25th February 2017, 11,035 respondents from different social and demographic groups in 11 non-EU countries - Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Norway, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States of America - were interviewed via telephone (mobile and fixed line) in their mother tongue on behalf of the Directorate-General for Communication (DG COMM). The methodology used is that of Flash Eurobarometer surveys as carried out by the Directorate-General for Communication (?Strategic communication? Unit). A technical note on the manner in which interviews were conducted by the Institutes within the TNS Political and Social network is annexed to this report. Also included are the interview methods and confidence intervals.
Book Synopsis European Prehistory by : Sarunas Milisauskas
Download or read book European Prehistory written by Sarunas Milisauskas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarunas Milisauskas· 1.1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this book is four-fold: to introduce English-speaking students and scholars to some of the outstanding archaeological research that has been done in Europe in recent years; to integrate this research into an anthropological frame of reference; to address episodes of culture change such as the transition to farming; the origin of complex societies, and the origin of urbanism, and to provide an overview of European prehistory from the earliest appearance of humans to the rise of the Roman empire. In 1978, the Academic Press published my book European Prehistory which, typically for that period, emphasized cultural evolution, culture process, technology, environment, and economy. To produce a new version and an up- to-date prehistory of Europe, I have invited contributions from specialists in the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. Thus while this version of European Prehistory is a new book, however, it still incorporates some data from the 1978 version, particularly in The Present Environment and Neolithic chapters. Like its predecessor, this edition is structured around selected general topics, such as technology, trade, settlement, warfare, and ritual.
