Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel, in Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land: Including a Visit to the City of Constantinople, in 1841 and 1842The object which the author of these Notes had in view, in his late tour, was merely the gratification of his'own curiosity. He had no intention of publishing any account of his obser vations, and hence, during his travels he kept very brief notes of the various countries and places visited, the objects of curiosity which attracted his attention, and the every-day scenes and occurrences of his journey. But after his return home, ' the frequent solicitations and earnest entreaties of numerous friends, induced him to prepare his Notes for the press. He has necessarily confined himself in these Notes to very brief sketches, without attempting any detailed de scription. He has carefully avoided all superfluous matter and common-place reflections; presenting to the reader plain facts, in preference to gaudy embellishments, and abstract, verbose and useless observations, which would only increase the size of his boom - Without imparting any intrinsic value to the work. In giving minute desor1ptions of some few objects of great interest, he has occasionally availed himself of some.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Notes of a Rambling Tour Through Egypt, Palestine and Europe A journey long contemplated is about to be undertaken. For years it has been the hope and the expectation that a trip abroad to the land of the lotus and the sacred crocodile; to the home of the Pharaohs and the scene of the captivity and final emancipation of Israel would be vouchsafed to us. That our eyes might look upon the land flowing with milk and honey; the land which Moses of old was only permitted to view from Nebo's lonely heights; the land where Jericho's massive walls were leveled with the blasts from the ram's horns of Joshua's mighty hosts; the land where Jesus of Nazareth spake as never man spake; where the miracle of the loaves and fishes was enacted among the lowly fishermen of Galilee; where the crucifixion and resurrection of the Saviour of mankind occurred, and where more than a thousand years later the faith and the fanaticism of the crusading millions of Europe left their bleaching bones in the futile effort to reclaim the holy city of Jerusalem from the accursed domination of the Moslem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel in Egypt, the Holy Land, Turkey, and Greece I am fully aware how imperfect is this attempt to de scribe the lands of the Bible, or to convey my own im pressions on visiting them. No words _of mine can ex press to you the happiness which I felt, and still feel, in those scenes, which have made the sacred vblume a new book to me, by giving a reality to its records, and illumi nating its every page. Egypt and Palestine, the land of bondage and the land of promise, are now no longer, as they once seemed to me, distant and unapproachable lands, overshadowed with mystery; but they are familiar as my own native land. The towns and villages, the fields and fountains, the 'hills and streams of syria-bethlehem, Bethany, and Nazareth, - Samaria, Sychar, and Galilee, Mount Zion, Moriah, and Olivet, - Tabor, and Hermon, and carmel, -tyre and Sidon, -are as distinctly before my mind's eye, while I write, as the well remembered scenes of my childhood; and touch a more responsive cord than they. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection focuses on representations of Egypt between 1750 and 1956. Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition of 1798-1801 failed in military terms, but succeeded in focusing Western attention on the country. The nation fascinated travellers because of its antiquity, its monuments, and its bazaars. In the nineteenth-century, the typical itinerary for travellers included Alexandria, Cairo, the Pyramids, and a journey by boat up the Nile to the temples of Luxor and others. Some of the essays included in this volume focus on fiction by writers like Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens, or travel works by Florence Nightingale, Lucie Duff-Gordon, and Gérard de Nerval. Others analyse representations of Egypt by explorers, American ex-soldiers, French painters, British colonial administrators and sociologists, and a Russian doctor investigating the efficacy of Muhammad Ali’s reforms in relation to the plague. There is also a discussion of the changes in nineteenth-century Egyptian dress.
