Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of a Camp-Follower, on the Western Front The hut - leader ushered me on board with the courtesy of a young commander inducting an elderly new mate; the difierence was that I had all the ropes to learn, with the possible exception of one he had already shown me on our way from the local headquarters of the The battered town was full of English soldiers, to whom indeed it owed its continued existence on the right side of the Line. In the gathering twilight, and the deeper shade of beetling ruins, most of them saluted either my leader's British warm, or my own voluminous trench-coat (with fleece lining) on the supposition of officers within. Left to myself, I should have done the wrong thing every time. It is expressly out of order for a camp-follower to give or take salutes. Yet what is he to do, when he gets a beauty from one whose boots he is unfit to black My leader had been showing me, with a pleasant nod and a genial civilian gesture, easier to emulate than to acquire. Hornung; 1866-1921), was an English poet and writer. From a Hungarian background, Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He returned in early 1886 when his father was dying and bankrupt, and began writing professionally shortly afterwards. Hornung had his first work published in 1887-the short story "Stroke of Five" in Belgravia magazine. His first novel, A Bride from the Bush, was published in 1890, and Hornung used his Australian experiences as a backdrop to the story. He went on to use Australia as a setting or plot element in a further seven novels and two collections of short stories. In 1899 The Amateur Cracksman was published, a series of short stories that introduced A. J. Raffles, a gentleman thief in late-Victorian Britain. Hornung dedicated the book to his friend, the writer Arthur Conan Doyle: "To A.C.D. This form of flattery," and the narrative form is similar to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, with Raffles and his partner Bunny Manders being the criminal counterparts to Holmes and Dr. Watson. Two further short story collections and a novel followed, as did a play, Raffles, The Amateur Cracksman, first shown at the Princess Theatre, New York in 1903.It is for the character of Raffles that Hornung is best remembered.

Excerpt: "The Ark was such a busy canteen that all this is easier said than it was done. Every morning we were kept at it as continuously from eleven to one as ever we were from four-thirty to eight-thirty. Those were our business hours; and though it was never quite such fierce shopping in the forenoon, it was then that the leader would go off in quest of fresh supplies and I was apt to be left in charge. This happened my very first morning. Shall I ever forget the intimidating multitude of Army boots seen under the door before we opened! And there was another of the early days, when the Somersets stormed our parapet in full fighting paraphernalia, with only me to stand up to them. Not much chance of foregathering then; but never an hour, seldom a single transaction within the hour, but brought me from the other side some quaint remark, some adorable display of patience, courtesy, or homely fun."

Book excerpt: Includes the First World War Illustrations Pack – 73 battle plans and diagrams and 198 photos E. W. Hornung was a noted English author who wrote around the turn of the Twentieth Century, his most famous creation being the Gentleman Thief, Raffles. During the later years of the First World War (1917-1918), the author visited the military camps of the British army. He was particularly struck by the character of the soldiers in their moments of brief repose out of the firing line and decided to write a semi-fictionalized account of the camps. This volume ‘Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front’ is that account; gripping, emotive and lucid, Hornung’s clear style and vivid eye of detail recreates the British troops that fought in Flanders Fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Three Armies: On and Behind the Western Front Of books about the war there is no end. That is my excuse for perpetrating one. Had there been one book, or even a dozen books, I should have hesitated long to thrust my effort into so select and easily identified a company. But the numbers that have appeared have included some so unusually hasty and badly done, I dare cherish hope for a comfortable nonentity such as the present volume. Moreover, the sanguine reader may be assured of certain soothing things. Here is nothing official. No luminary of any War Cabinet has endorsed anything I write, or prefaced it by any eulogistic foreword. The views presented and the things seen are the views and observations merely of an ordinarily intelligent layman, not in the least concerned with the purely military or strategic aspects of the deadly game. To the average man, this war has brought a total revision of thought. For thinking in regiments and batteries, he has had to substitute thinking in armies of millions and whole parks of artillery. For battles covering a conceivable area and a few days at most, he has had to hear of battle-fronts hundreds of miles long, and of conflicts dragged into months without cessation. All this has conveyed to him one thing: monstrous size. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Who has forgotten the thrill of horror experienced when the news came of the attack upon Sumter, confirming the truth he was so slow to believe, that sacrilegious hand had been laid upon the sacred Ark of the Union, and the terrible alternative forced upon the Govern ment of war, dismemberment, or complicity with an evil which would rear its hydra-head, and spread blight over our fair territories and sister States yet to be? And we remember, too, that when the grievous necessity of war was accepted, each one felt that the lion had but to shake Off his lethargy, put forth his strength, and go forward - the Army of the N orth - in a grand triumphal march, to quell and intimidate, by its presence, our rebellious, misguided brethren, and bring them with contrition back into the fold-back into the once United compact, those who had inconsiderately stricken a blow at the great Magna Charta of Union and Liberty.
