Download or read book From Peacekeeping to Peacemaking written by Nicholas Gammer and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of Canada's response to the disintegration of the Federal State of Yugoslavia considers how Canadian foreign policy was formed, and the role of the prime minister in this decision-making. Gammer (political science, Okanagan University College) argues that Mulroney used his office to redefine international standards on humanitarian intervention. Gammer also outlines the risks in doing this, and considers the impact of Mulroney's stance on the behavior of Canadian troops. He considers the role of political leadership in foreign affairs, and its relationship to legitimacy. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book White Gold written by Karl Froschauer and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining five major public and private hydroelectric projects from the 1960s to the 1980s in various parts of Canada, Froschauer (sociology and anthropology, Simon Fraser U.) explains how they increased utility debts, hurt the environment and local communities, and resulted in the layoff of 25,000 employees. He describes errors in timing and magnitude, in expected influence on industrial transformation, and in integration into regional or national power grids. He applies a unifying political economy perspective to the example projects and the industry as a whole. He himself worked for BC Hydro from 1966 to 1981. Canadian card order number: C99-910638-4. Download or read book How Ottawa Decides written by French, Richard and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1984, How Ottawa Decides is an insider's view of how Ottawa tried throughout the 1970s to establish priorities and act on them. The book anatomizes the politics of the bureaucracy and the Cabinet, showing how power really operated in Ottawa during this period. It tracks the failure of many ambitious efforts to impose political control over government departments long used to operating without undue interference from elected officials. How Ottawa Decides is startling first-hand account of the forces that really ran the federal government in the 1970s.

Download or read book Steering the Course written by Sam Hughes and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-04-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hughes gives moving details about his life, from his time in England as a child while his father was in action in France during World War I, to time abroad in the army during World War II, to events during his twenty-six-year tenure on the bench. His passion for family and for law shine through his account. Even after retirement, he was still very much involved in the law and was appointed to lead the Royal Commission investigating child abuse at the Mount Cashel Orphanage in Newfoundland. Steering the Course not only documents a life but provides a poignant first-hand account of this century. His recollections of the events and changes that this country has undergone during the last eighty years are a stirring reminder of an important part of our recent past. From the book: "My earliest recollection was of the first daylight air raid on London when my mother and I were living in St John's Wood. I remember the explosions that accompanied the bombing of Selfridge's in Oxford Street and I remember clearly that the taxi from which we were hastily removed had yellow facings on its doors." "On New Year's Day 1944 misery and frustration prevailed. Slit trenches, the natural refuge and even sleeping place for soldiers in combat, were full of water ... George Renison and I took a bottle of Scotch whisky to the command vehicle of the First Brigade ... The bottle, which went only once around the company, was a reminder of the celebrations of other days and its like had not been seen for weeks."

Book Synopsis Uncle Sam and Us by : Stephen Clarkson
Download or read book Uncle Sam and Us written by Stephen Clarkson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-09-28 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between them, Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien radically altered the structure and functions of the federal government, first by signing and implementing major trade liberalization projects, and then by cutting back the size of their governments' budgets and the scope of their policies. Uncle Sam and Us analyzes the Mulroney-Chrétien era's impact on Canadian governance through two related factors, globalization from without and neoconservatism from within. Stephen Clarkson begins his study by conceptualizing the present Canadian state as a five-tiered, nested system stretching from the municipal and provincial levels, through the federal government, and on to the new continental and global spheres of governance: in effect, he argues, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization have added a 'supraconstitution' to Canada's existing institutions. His analysis concerns the changes that have occurred not just in the federal government, but in provincial and municipal governance as well. The impact of globalization and neoconservatism is examined extensively in the second part of Clarkson's study, which examines how the functions of the Canadian state have altered. Clarkson addresses the changes in a number of policy areas such as macro and monetary policy, regulatory, industrial, and trade policy, as well as social, labour, environmental, cultural, and foreign policy. In linking external forces and internal factors in his analysis, Clarkson brings together separate aspects of the Canadian state into a comprehensive understanding of the current Canadian political climate. He combines a global knowledge of the international political economy with a micro concern for detailed analyses of policy issues, and concludes that the responsibility for Canada's predicament lies less with external forces, than with Canadians and the governments they elected. He ends with a hopeful look into the future, pointing towards a realization of the shortcomings of neoconservative globalization, and the expectation of a new governing paradigm. Book Synopsis In the Long Run We're All Dead by : Timothy Lewis
Download or read book In the Long Run We're All Dead written by Timothy Lewis and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Long Run We're All Dead: The Canadian Turn to Fiscal Restraint offers the first comprehensive scholarly account of this vital public policy issue. Lewis deftly analyzes the history of deficit finance from before Confederation through Canada's postwar Keynesianism to the retrenchment of the Mulroney and Chrtien years. In doing so, he illuminates how the political conditions for Ottawa's deficit elimination in the 1990s materialized after over 20 consecutive years in the red, and how the decline of Canadian Keynesianism has made way for the emergence of politics organized around balanced budgets.
