Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typical Women of China: Abridged From the Chinese Work "Records of Virtuous Women of Ancient and Modern Times" Whilst the anecdotes and reflections must often seem very insipid to our Western tastes, they take us into the homes of women of all ranks, and reveal much there that is curious and interesting. The translation doubtless has many defects. It makes no pretensions to being the work of a critical scholar. It is an honest effort to convey the real meaning of the original, translating rather in accordance with the sense than precisely in harmony with the letter, and often paraphrasing the sentences and taking some license in expanding the sententious brevity of the Wen - li, in order to bring out the meaning more fully. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From China: With Particular Reference to the Empress Dowager and the Women of China Her Imperial Majesty's forty-seven years' reign proved the heart and mind quality which made a strong character, such as history has seldom recorded. The Empress Dowager of China was a great woman, and China's great men recognized and acknowledged this fact. The many conversations awarded me with Her Majesty revealed much of the concealed force and value of China's women. Ignorance of J these qualities has brought a pronounced misrepresentation of China's womanhood. May the light of understanding dispel the darkness of ignorance and reveal the true China and her people. It is the first major study of the development of Chinese feminism in what is arguably the most formative period in the history of modern China. In its women-centered approach, the book challenges the official women's history authored by the Chinese Communist Party and long accepted by Euro-American scholars. This book will set the agenda for future scholars researching the relationship between feminism and nationalism in China."—Dorothy Ko, author of Teachers of the Inner Chambers

Book Synopsis When "I" was Born by : Jing M. Wang

Download or read book When "I" was Born written by Jing M. Wang and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between the 1920s and 1940s, a genre emerged in Chinese literature that would reveal crucial contradictions in Chinese culture that still exist today. At a time of intense political conflict, Chinese women began to write autobiography, a genre that focused on personal identity and self-exploration rather than the national, collective identity that the country was championing. When "I" Was Born: Women's Autobiography in Modern China reclaims the voices of these particular writers, voices that have been misinterpreted and overlooked for decades. Tracing women writers as they move from autobiographical fiction, often self-revelatory and personal, to explicit autobiographies that focused on women's roles in public life, Jing M. Wang reveals the factors that propelled this literary movement, the roles that liberal translators and their renditions of Western life stories played, and the way in which these women writers redefined writing and gender in the stories they told. But Wang reveals another story as well: the evolving history and identity of women in modern Chinese society. When "I" Was Born adds to a growing body of important work in Chinese history and culture, women's studies, and autobiography in a global context. Writers discussed include Xie Bingying, Zhang Ailing, Yu Yinzi, Fei Pu, Lu Meiyen, Feng Heyi, Ye Qian, Bai Wei, Shi Wen, Fan Xiulin, Su Xuelin, and Lu Yin.
