Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suddenly they go from striving for A’s to barely passing, from fretting about cooties to obsessing for hours about crushes. Former chatterboxes answer in monosyllables; freethinkers mimic everything from clothes to opinions. Their bodies and psyches morph through the most radical changes since infancy. They are kids in the middle-school years, the age every adult remembers well enough to dread. Here at last is an up-to-date anthropology of this critically formative period. Prize-winning education reporter Linda Perlstein spent a year immersed in the lunchroom, classrooms, hearts, and minds of a group of suburban Maryland middle schoolers and emerged with this pathbreaking account. Perlstein reveals what’s really going on under kids’ don’t-touch-me facade while they grapple with schoolwork, puberty, romance, and identity. A must-read for parents and educators, Not Much Just Chillin’ offers a trail map to the baffling no-man’s-land between child and teen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A report from the front lines of the most formative-and least understood-years of children's lives Suddenly they go from striving for A's to barely passing, or obsessing for hours over "boyfriends" they've barely spoken to. Former chatterboxes answer in monosyllables; free-thinkers mimic their peers' clothes, not to mention their opinions. Bodies and psyches morph under the most radical changes since infancy. On the surface, they're "just chillin'." Underneath, they're a stew of anxiety and ardor, conformity and rebellion. They are kids in the middle school years, the age every adult remembers well enough to dread. No one understands them, not parents, not teachers, least of all themselves-no one, that is, until Linda Perlstein spent a year immersed in the lives of suburban Maryland middle-schoolers and emerged with this pathbreaking account. The book traverses the school year, following five representative kids-and including the stories of many more-as they study, party, IM each other, and simply explain what they think and feel. As Perlstein writes about what she saw and heard, she explains what's really going on under the don't-touch-me facade of these critically formative years, in which kids grapple with schoolwork, puberty, romance, identity, and new kinds of relationships with their parents and peers. Not Much Just Chillin' offers a trail map to the baffling no-man's-land between child and teen, the time when children don't want to grow up, and so badly do.

Book excerpt: The pressure is on at schools across America. In recent years, reforms such as No Child Left Behind have created a new vision of education that emphasizes provable results, uniformity, and greater attention for floundering students. Schools are expected to behave more like businesses and judged almost solely on the bottom line: test scores. To see if this world is producing better students, Linda Perlstein immersed herself in a suburban Maryland elementary school. The resulting portrait -- detailed, human, and truly thought-provoking -- is marked by the same narrative gifts and expertise that made Not Much Just Chillin' so illuminating. The school, once deemed a failure, is now held up as an example of reform done right. Perlstein explores the rewards and costs of that transformation, through the experiences of the people who lived it. Nine-year-olds meditate to activate their brains before exams and kindergartners write paragraphs. Teachers attempt to address diverse needs at the same time they are expected to follow daily scripts, and feel compelled to focus on topics that will be tested at the expense of those that won't. The principal attempts to keep it all together, in the face of immense challenges. Perlstein provides the first detailed view of how new education policies are modified by human realities. Tested will be talked about, thought about, written about -- and will almost certainly play an important role in the national debate as the federal education law come up for renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AOD and the fellas were hanging at the minipark, gambling and watching the girls. One of the crew members got enough money to feed the group. They decided to head to Gabe's for sloppy bags. But things didn't go as planned. The BWGs were already there, and things got out of hand quickly. AOD saw the gun and picked it up, aimed it into the crowd, and fired off one shot. The bullet hit Mike-G in the face. He stood still and then dropped to the pavement. Hearing sirens, the CC Live boys ran toward the MLK school field, where they split up and ran their own ways. AOD hid under a car for a while. When he decided to come out, he threw the gun on the roof of the elementary school and started walking as if nothing happened. Once on the streets, he heard, "Get down before I shoot your little ass." While riding to the police station, the officer kept saying, "So you like to shoot people, huh?" AOD knew enough to keep his mouth closed. Because that was the CC Live's way of doing things.
Book Synopsis From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight by : Bruce Ross
Download or read book From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight written by Bruce Ross and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Ross knew something was wrong. He felt displaced and isolated from friends, family, and society. He had no one to turn to, and so he tried to cope with it himself. The fact that he had a disease called depression never entered his mind. He, like so many people, thought that only other people suffered from depression, not someone who appeared to be a well-adjusted, middle class person. From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight chronicles Ross's journey and struggles with depression, from his high school years until middle age. During this time, his promising start in life transformed into a dusk, in which Ross lived twenty-four hours of each day in a gloomy and unsettled existence. With eloquence and charm, he recaptures the joys of his childhood in Dartmouth, growing up with his buddies. Gradually, those times faded, and he found himself in the middle of his teenage years and the beginnings of his depression. Ross lived with the pain of depression and its "twin sister," Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), for more than thirty-five years before achieving a breakthrough thanks to the experimental procedure known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This exciting advancement in medical science shows great promise for depression sufferers in North America and around the world. From Dawn to Dusk to Daylight is the candid and revealing story of the trials and tribulations of living with depression and the relief DBS finally brought.

Libraries have traditionally offered a variety programs and services for YAs, and although more emphasis has been given to serving teens in recent years, little has been done to distinguish between groups within the category, and meet the specific developmental needs of this broad range of library users. This collection complements Anderson's previous collection, Serving Older Teens, by focusing on the needs of tweens and young teens, ages 11-14. This is the age range when many young people stop using the library and lose interest in reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrant, dynamic teen book clubs—the kind teens eagerly anticipate and attend session after session—are teen-centered. With innovative, pragmatic ideas that will attract and retain teen readers, this guide provides everything you need to run a successful, teen-centered book club. Covering every step, from planning and promoting to how to prompt discussion and keep it civilized, this is a one-stop source for the teen book club leader. Dozens of reproducibles for teens include book lists, ground rules, and book-based activities. The book even has directions for evaluating your club and lists of resources for more information. Whether you're starting a teen book club, trying to revive a flagging program, or wish to build on past success, if you're involved in a teen book club, this guide is a must. What's the difference between a teen book club and an adult one? Too often, the answer is Not much. Like so many programs for teens, traditional book clubs tend to be scaled-down versions of adult clubs. If book selection, taboo topics, and logistical details are the most important things that set your teen book club apart from an adult one, you could be missing a huge opportunity. Vibrant, dynamic teen book clubs—the kind teens eagerly anticipate and attend session after session—are teen-centered. They're not merely by, for and about teens, but are grounded in the admittedly radical idea that the club is not primarily about library programming or even about books (!) but is all about teens—their interests and needs, their social habits and styles, their initiative. Books are the medium and the club is the method to achieve the ultimate goal of developing teen readers and leaders. Furthermore, the teen-centered book club has huge potential to further a whole range of library goals, from bringing more teen patrons through the door, to building community-wide awareness and support for the library itself. What sets this book apart from the typical book club guide is that it is the only guide that addresses the unique constraints of public and school libraries—budgeting, impact on the facility and the collection, and potential attempts at censorship, to name just a few. It's also the only guide that takes a teen-centered approach, putting front-and-center the idea that, as with so many other things, book clubs for teens are not merely scaled-back versions of adult clubs. Whether you are starting a club, attempting to revive a flagging program, or building on past success, this manual offers you innovative, pragmatic ideas that will attract and retain teen readers. Grades 6-12. Teen Book Clubs offers a fresh new approach for today's teen readers and clear instructions, along with tips and ideas, for building teen-centered book clubs. In 12 brief chapters the book covers: the teen-centered book club: what it is and what it takes to make it work putting it together: planning and putting the plan in action going public: recruiting, boosting visibility, garnering support 15 cunningly creative types of teen book clubs using book club to develop teen leaders scads of book lists, reproducibles, and sample discussion prompters tweaking, troubleshooting, and tips for keeping it civilized evaluations beyond measure resources for more information.
