Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to assist in the application of the Northwestern Ontario forest ecosystem classification to forest management in northwestern Ontario. Interpretations relate vegetation, soil, site, and climatic factors to limitations or opportunities for forest management. The guide introduces the concept of forest ecosystem interpretations; presents the concept as a method of applying the classification to site-specific management through a set of generalized treatment units that may be further adapted to accommodate local variations in site or climate; describes some basic silvicultural interpretations, followed by interpretations for wildlife; and deals with incorporation of the system into operational forestry surveys.

Book excerpt: The Northwestern Ontario Forest Ecosystem Classification (NWO FEC) provdes a framework that forest managers can use for classifying forest soils and vegetation (S-Types and V-Types) and for land management applications. For many forest management uses, NWO FEC V- or S-type information must be mapped at a scale compatible with data collection by ground survey. However, ground surveys are typically costly or difficult, and a photointerpretation procedure for typing soils or vegetation would be useful. This study was undertaken to develop a reliable methodology for interpreting NWO FEC S- and V- types using aerial photos. The study area was the Aulneau Peninsula along the Lake of the Woods, and study methods included a review of existing information, a field reconnaissance, and development of photinterpretation keys. This report presents the study results and the interpretation procedure developed. photos together with other available information. Book excerpt: The goal of the Ontario Ecological Land Classification Program is to establish a comprehensive and consistent province-wide approach for ecosystem description, inventory, and interpretation. The Ontario Ecological Data Repository was established to ensure that the Program's classification data is secure, consistent, and accessible. Data described in this report are contained within the Repository and were used to construct the Northwest Ontario Forest Ecosystem Classification. The data are also being used to construct a wetland ecosystem classification for northwestern Ontario. The report includes both forest and wetland ecosystem plot data including site name and latitude/longitude, soil type, vegetation type, data set, and whether certain types of data are available.

Book excerpt: Representativeness is often identified as a criterion for ecological studies and assessments of parks and reserve networks. In this report, an assessment was made of the environmental representativeness of forest plot data from a number of Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield surveys in Ontario. The researchers examined the frequency distribution of the survey plots in terms of selected climatic, soil, and topographic gradients. In addition, they evaluated the distributions of plots against site regions and new climatic classifications (or regionalisations) that were generated for the province. Undersurveyed climatic domains were identified and recommendations are included regarding the design and location of future Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield survey plots.

Book excerpt: Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The book is an invaluable and substantial reference source about the current trends in ELC and will be of particular value to ecologists, foresters, geographers, resource managers, wildlife biologists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, educators and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successional trends in the boreal forest have been inferred using two approaches: (i) analysis of size and/or age class distributions of trees, and species vital attributes; (ii) enumeration of stands at different ages. The first approach assumes that mortality, natality and growth rates, and life-history strategies, are similar between species. The second approach is restricted to self regenerating, monodominant forests and assumes that the reconstructed successional trends are not confounded by intersite environmental variation. The objective of this study was to develop a succession (vegetation dynamics) model for the boreal forests of northwest Ontario using these two approaches. The data used in this study were collected between 1983 and 1988 as part of the North Western Ontario Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC) project. A total of 1389 plots enumerated within the ca. 184,000 km$\sp2$ study area were retained for further analysis. Percent cover estimates were obtained for all vascular plants and terricolous cryptograms species within 10 x 10 m plots. Tree and shrub cover were separately enumerated in four height-based vegetation strara. In addition, extensive edaphic data were collected within each plot. An analysis was undertaken to ascertain vegetation-environment relationships and soil variable redundancy. In addition, a synoptic stand dynamic model for the boreal forests of northwestern Ontario was developed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: The International Energy Agency Bioenergy Agreement was initiated as the Forestry Energy Agreement in 1978. It was expanded in 1986 to form the Bioenergy Agreement. Since that time the Agreement has thrived with some fifteen countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and the CEC) currently being signatories. The objective of the Agreement is to establish increased programme and project cooperation between the participants in the field of bioenergy. The environmental consequences of intensive forest harvesting have been the subject of intense interest for the Agreement from its initiation. This interest was formulated as a Cooperative Project under the Forestry Energy Agreement in 1984. It developed further under each of the subsequent three-year Tasks of the Bioenergy Agreement (Task III, Activity 3 "Nutritional consequences of intensive forest harvesting on site productivity", Task VI, Activity 6 "Environmental impacts of harvesting" and more recently Task IX, Activity 4 "Environmental impacts of intensive harvesting". The work has been supported by five main countries from within the Bioenergy Agreement: Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, UK, and USA. The continued work has resulted in a significant network of scientists work ing together towards a common objective - that of generating a better under standing of the processes involved in nutrient cycling and the development of management regimes which will maintain or enhance long term site productivity.
