Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a fast-growing field of land-use planning affecting many disciplines. At present, UK Government legislation requires EIA for certain types of development. Subject to a further new European directive, an EIA will be required for all policies, plans and programmes. Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice provides a practical introduction to the subject and relates the theory to the practice through extensive use of case studies. Edited by Joe Weston, the book draws on contributions from a number of practising experts in the field and covers topics such as: assessing the need for EIAs; the environmental team; scoping and public participation; internal and external consultation; local lobbying; local authority review and decision-making; public enquiries; monitoring the impacts; pollution control; and the lessons to be learned. Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice provides a practical introduction to EIA for final year undergraduate and postgraduate MSc courses in planning, geography, civil engineering, building and estate management, and development.

Download or read book Nuclear Power written by Stan Openshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986. Nuclear power is now regarded as essential to survival in the twenty-first century. But the safety of nuclear power stations is a highly controversial topic, and where they will be sited is a most vital question. In this independent critique, based on four years of research, Stan Openshaw argues that reactor siting provides a simple means of offering additional, design-independent margins of safety. Reactor siting policies in the UK and USA are examined and it is suggested that UK siting practices need to be updated. The large number of potential alternative sites should be used to devise new planning strategies – strategies which will minimise both the residual health risks from accidents and the danger that a future change in public opinion might lead to calls for the closure of many existing sites on safety grounds.

Download or read book The Regional Imperative written by Urlan A. Wannop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on cases and interviews in Britain, Europe and the United States, this book explains the recurrence of regional planning and of initiatives in regional governance, in a wide range of advanced industrial countries. Providing an analysis of the nature of regional planning and governance, the book traces the development of regional planning and the institutions associated with it. It also looks at the way that regions have been changing their form under pressure from economic and political developments and examines how regional planning and governance has responded, comparing experience in the UK, the rest of Europe and the US. In concluding that regionalism is an imperative feature of politics in most countries, associated with almost any of the variety of forms of governance, the author offers a major appraisal of the significance of regional planning in an intemational context
Download or read book Caring for Place written by Patsy Healey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on preeminent planning theorist Patsy Healey’s personal experiences as a resident of a small rural town in England, to explore what place and community mean in a particular context, and how different initiatives struggle to get a stake in the wider governance relations while maintaining their own focus and ways of working. Throughout the book, Healey assesses the public value generated by community initiatives and the impact of such activity on wider governance dynamics. Healey explores the power which small communities are able to mobilise through self-organisation and grassroots activism. Through the lens of Wooler and Glendale as a micro-society, the book centres on a community experiencing an economic and demographic transition. It focuses on three initiatives developed and led by local people – a small community development trust, an informal attentionmobilising network, and a Neighbourhood Plan project which uses an opportunity provided within the formal planning system. It examines how, in such civil society activism, people came together to promote local development in a place and community neglected by the dominant political economy. The book details the power and force of community initiative and its potential for transforming both the future possibilities for the place and community itself, as well as wider governance relations. Overall, it seeks to enrich academic and policy discussion about how the relations between formal government and civil society energy could evolve in more productive and progressive directions.

Book Synopsis A Region in Transition by : John Tomaney
Download or read book A Region in Transition written by John Tomaney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK has now joined a Europe-wide trend towards more devolved forms of government (e.g. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Assemblies). In the context of this general trend towards regionalizm as a focus for public policy and as a source of cultural and political identity, an interdisciplinary team from Newcastle University combine to analyze how this affects the North East of England. There has been comparatively little published on the contemporary development of English Regions and the North East is a particularly important case study, as throughout the 1990s it has experienced a range of social, economic and political changes. This book will contribute to key contemporary policy debates, which will affect all of the English regions and should be read by all social scientists interested in European regional development.
