The winning name? Wau Bun, a Potawatomi word meaning dawn and also the name of a noted Potawatomi chief from the late 1700s. But the residents of Skokie Swamp hated the name and plotted their revenge. Three years later, as Insull was on a train pulling into the station, he was horrified to discover that vandals had taken it upon themselves to rename the station Hot Bun. Insull and the locals compromised, and the more neutral moniker of Northfield was adopted. The Skokie Valley Electric Line has long since been closed, and popular legend holds that Insull died penniless and alone in Paris. But the town of Northfield has survived and thrived. Once a loose affiliation of farms, Northfield is now a quiet suburb that has enviable schools, beautiful homes, and gorgeous landscapes.

Book excerpt: The Northfield Raid, first published in 1933, is a brief account of the infamous attempted robbery by the James-Younger Gang of the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota. Following the Civil War, Cole Younger, along with his brothers Bob and Jim, robbed banks and trains with Frank and Jesse James and other members of the James-Younger Gang. The robbery attempt in Northfield on September 7, 1876 would prove to be the last of Cole’s exploits. When members of the gang rode into Northfield, they wore flowing dusters to conceal their guns. Once inside, they dropped their coats and demanded the money from the vault. Joseph Lee Heywood, the bank clerk on duty, was killed when he refused to open the safe. When the townspeople were alerted and resisted the robbers, the gang dropped everything and fled. In the melee that followed, Nicholas Gustavson, a town resident, was killed, as were gang members Clell Miller and William Stiles. The pursuit of the gang went on for weeks and covered a large area, during which time the gang split up and managed to get away. The Youngers were eventually captured at Madelia, Minnesota, in another gun battle; gang member Charlie Pitts was killed. The three Younger brothers were tried, found guilty of murder, and sentenced to life in the state prison at Stillwater. Bob Younger died in prison in 1889; Jim was pardoned in 1901 and committed suicide in 1902; Cole, also pardoned in 1901, died in 1916. Cole served his time as a model prisoner. Included are 13 pages of illustrations.

Her adventures include a grand tour of the Chateau under the cloak of darkness and is documented with photos and floor plans. She pleaded with her parents to send her to the boarding school, but their answer was "No". Nevertheless she retained an attachment to the school. When she became an adult she began giving to the alumnae fund because she believed in the ethic of the school. One year a flustered alumnae secretary phoned asking what class she had been affiliated with, presuming the undocumented alum had probably flunked out. Her answer was "Why 1964!" After that she was invited to reunions and her "news" appeared in the alumnae publications. In 2004, came the announcement that the Northfield campus was closing. That was the spark that prompted her to return for "her" 40th Reunion. This is that story.
