Book Synopsis Forest Humus Forms in Northwestern Ontario by : R. A. Sims
Download or read book Forest Humus Forms in Northwestern Ontario written by R. A. Sims and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a new provisional classification of forest humus forms within forests of the boreal and Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence forest regions of north-western Ontario. Four major orders are recognized: mulls, moders, mors, and peatymors. Humus form groups are defined and described, and methodologies and approaches for humus form recognition in the field are briefly discussed. The first-approximation classification system permits identification of 11 forest humus form subgroups in north-western Ontario. The hierarchical system consists of a field key and a set of one-page summaries that describe each of the humus form subgroups. Common organic layer thickness ranges, the relative occurrence and distribution of the forest humus forms, and other data are summarized in relation to north- western Ontario's Forest Ecosystem Classification plot network. Forest humus forms are related to soil/site conditions, vegetation, general climate, and forest management practices in the region are also considered.

Book Synopsis A Market Segmentation Analysis of Desired Ecotourism Opportunities by : G. David Twynam
Download or read book A Market Segmentation Analysis of Desired Ecotourism Opportunities written by G. David Twynam and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study reported in this document, designed to identify ecotourism opportunities desired by visitors and potential visitors to northern Ontario, was conducted using two surveys. The first focused on summer travellers, visitors to the area, and residents. The second survey (a mail survey) focused on people with an interest in outdoor recreation as indicated by their membership in recreational organizations. Principal components analysis was used to identify different market segments among respondents. The objective of this segmentation was to divide a relatively heterogeneous group of actual and potential ecotourists into more homogeneous groups having similar product and service needs. Segments were identified that show potential demand for ecotourism in northern Ontario, thereby allowing operators and marketers in the tourism industry to identify specific target markets and develop product and service packages that best suit each segment.
Book Synopsis Natural Regeneration of Hardwood and Softwood Tree Species Following Full-tree Harvesting in Northwestern Ontario by : Edward S. Symons
Download or read book Natural Regeneration of Hardwood and Softwood Tree Species Following Full-tree Harvesting in Northwestern Ontario written by Edward S. Symons and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents results of a study that describes the stand structure and composition of selected full-tree harvested sites about ten years after harvest, with examination of evidence for ingress of natural regeneration. Sampled sites were stratified by seedbed condition and the pre-harvest vegetation type they supported; seedbeds were classified as either intact/mixed forest floor or scalped/mineral soil exposed. Vegetation types were amalgamated into ecologically similar groups or treatment units. Most sites were classified as black spruce-jack pine/feathermoss with intact/mixed forest floor seedbeds. Both the rate of natural ingress over the first seven years of stand development and the resultant stand structure and composition are noted.

Book Synopsis Forest Sector Socioeconomic Impact Model for Northern Ontario Communities by : A. A. Kubursi
Download or read book Forest Sector Socioeconomic Impact Model for Northern Ontario Communities written by A. A. Kubursi and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begins with a literature review on community economic development in general and on forestry-dependent communities. The literature is reviewed in the following terms: the financial market, traditional and non-traditional strategies for development, resource-dependent communities, and government roles and policies in economic development. The review is organised into topics including the role of entrepreneurship, urban community development in Canada, and local industrial development. The next sections examine selected measures of sustainable forestry and community development, and factors involved in northern Ontario community development. Finally, an input-output analytic model is presented for assessing impact on a community of expenditures on investment projects and other activities at the local and provincial level. The analysis is illustrated for a hypothetical case where the output of pulp and paper operations in Kapuskasing, Ontario is valued at 150 million. Economic impact results are supplemented by discussion of some general socio-economic indicators produced by the model.

Book Synopsis The Distribution and Significance of Scleroderris Disease in Ontario by : Anthony Arthur Hopkin
Download or read book The Distribution and Significance of Scleroderris Disease in Ontario written by Anthony Arthur Hopkin and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scleroderris canker, caused by the fungus Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet, has been regarded as a major pest of pine for over 30 years. The North American race of scleroderris is associated with numerous pine planting failures in Ontario since the 1950s, while the European race has been restricted by an aggressive system of detection and sanitation. The purpose of this document is to report on the distribution and significance of scleroderris canker in Ontario since the introduction of the European race, first isolated in Canada in 1978. The report describes the life cycle and epidemiology of the fungus, methods of scleroderris control, and methods and materials used to detect scleroderris and identify the race. It then provides maps of Gremmeniella abietina distribution in central Ontario for various time periods, with relevant discussion.
