Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casual stargazers are familiar with many classical figures and asterisms composed of bright stars (e.g., Orion and the Plough), but this book reveals not just the constellations of today but those of yesteryear. The history of the human identification of constellations among the stars is explored through the stories of some influential celestial cartographers whose works determined whether new inventions survived. The history of how the modern set of 88 constellations was defined by the professional astronomy community is recounted, explaining how the constellations described in the book became permanently “extinct.” Dr. Barentine addresses why some figures were tried and discarded, and also directs observers to how those figures can still be picked out on a clear night if one knows where to look. These lost constellations are described in great detail using historical references, enabling observers to rediscover them on their own surveys of the sky. Treatment of the obsolete constellations as extant features of the night sky adds a new dimension to stargazing that merges history with the accessibility and immediacy of the night sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern-day love story that explores childhood trauma, the boundaries between idealism and self-righteousness, and the heartaches we must confront in order to chart our courses forward. Lo Gunderson feels trapped in her small midwestern hometown until she sees an ad for a free car in the local paper. To maintain her staunch anticapitalist values, she refuses to spend money on what she can find for free, so this car is the perfect ticket out of the town. Though it doesn’t cost any money, it still comes with a price. Blanche Peterson is dying and asks for a single favor—that Lo track down her estranged son, whom Blanche hasn’t seen in over a decade. Before she can decide whether to fulfill Blanche’s dying wish, she needs to get the car started. She’s helped by John Blank, a Southern auto mechanic who moved up north for a fresh start. Despite vastly different backgrounds, they share an electrifying mutual attraction that threatens to upend Lo’s carefully constructed worldview. Meanwhile, Blanche’s son, Jason, finds himself adrift after an argument with his girlfriend. Memories of his negligent mother and the death of his father resurface for the first time in years as he travels across the country searching for what comes next. Manmade Constellations is a smart, magnetic, and emotional novel dedicated to the American landscape, exploring how taking to the open road teaches lessons that can’t be learned at home.

Book Synopsis The origin of Constellations by : Kai Helge Wirth
Download or read book The origin of Constellations written by Kai Helge Wirth and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this publication the author will reveal a fascinating prehistoric system of orientation that has existed over thousands of years, a system that has constantly been visible but could no longer be identified or decoded. Sir Isaac Newton himself was the first scientist who attempted to solve this mystery. However, it wasn't until the beginning of the 21st century that the German geographer and artscientist, Kai-Helge Wirth finally fullfilled Sir Isaac's quest. Wirth assembled all available sources about the origins of the star constellations in his work „Chronologia“ and examined texts by Appolonius, Exodus and others in great detail. Newton reached the following conclusion: the star constellations were not a natural phenomenon, visible to anyone, who gazes at the sky – but, rather designs, created by seafarers, as an aid in orientation. Chiron, the teacher of the Argonauts drew up a map of the 48 constellations as we know them today. After that it was Musaios, helmsman (navigator) of the seagoing ship ARGO, who transferred Chiron's constellations to a 3-D globe. This is identical with Isaac Newton's discoveries. The images of the star maps add up to a concrete map of the world and, the constellations are shaped and arranged to represent the world's currents in minute detail. Neighboring images show neighboring currents. This opens surprising insight into the wide range of prehistoric knowledge and the communication horizon of ancient mankind.
Book Synopsis The Power of Stars by : Bryan E. Penprase
Download or read book The Power of Stars written by Bryan E. Penprase and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, this new edition provides a readable, beautifully illustrated journey through world cultures and the vibrant array of sky mythology, creation stories, models of the universe, temples and skyscrapers that each culture has created to celebrate and respond to the power of the night sky. Sections on the archaeoastronomy of South Asia and South East Asia have been expanded, with original photography and new research on temple alignments in Southern India, and new material describing the astronomical practices of Indonesia, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Beautiful photographs of temples in India and Asia have been added, as well as new diagrams explaining the alignment of these structures and the astronomical underpinnings of temples within the Pallava and Chola cultures. From new fieldwork in the Four Corners region of North America, Dr. Penprase has included accounts of Pueblo skywatching and photographs of ceremonial kivas that help elucidate the rich astronomical knowledge of the Pueblo people. The popular “Archaeoastronomy of Skyscrapers” section of the book has been updated as well, with new interpretations of skyscrapers in Indonesia, Taiwan and China. With the rapid pace of discovery in astronomy and astrophysics, entirely new perspectives are emerging about dark matter, inflation and the future of the universe. The Power of Stars puts these discoveries in context and describes how they fit into the modern perspective of cosmology, which has arisen from the universal human response to the sky that has inspired both ancient and modern cultures.
