Book excerpt: Early in its 250 year history Northborough presented a varied environment. The town's rich soils supported family farms while its location on the Assabet River encouraged water powered manufacturing. Positioned on the main thoroughfares from Boston to points west, it supported transportation of agricultural products, manufactured goods, and even military armaments. The growing population's needs were met by local shopkeepers, doctors, and bankers. Primarily viewed as a residential community, Northborough today is enhanced by a vibrant mix of commercial establishments. Excellent fruit and vegetable farms, though fewer in number, are highly visible. The saw and textile mills, comb and button factories have been replaced with businesses that address modern needs. With a surging population, shops have been replaced by stores of growing size and number. The major roads that cross the town enable active warehouse and shipping operations that carry freight along the same basic routes that were once used by oxen. While much has changed in fairly dramatic fashion, one can still see threads of the past as we enter our 2016 Sestercentennial.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northborough History It may very properly be said that this volume came into being as a result of the celebration of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Northborough, Mass., which was held August 16 and 17, 1916. The celebration, which presented many interesting and beautiful features - historical and otherwise - was a success in every particular, and called forth much favorable comment from the strangers within our gates. Soon it began to dawn upon the citizens of Northborough that they had staged something worth while, and that the event should be suitably recorded in book form so as not to pass out of the mind of man. This sentiment had become so general that many prominent citizens of the town requested the Business Men's Committee to bring the matter before the General Committee for consideration. Accordingly, at the final meeting of the Business Men's Committee, held October 9, 1916, a committee consisting of George A. Brigham, Herbert L. Kimball, and Clarence E. Buckley, was elected to draw up a set of resolutions recommending that the General Committee prepare a suitable record of the celebration for preservation and for distribution to the inhabitants of the town. These resolutions were presented to the General Committee at a meeting held October 25, 1916, and after a general discussion were acted upon as follows: viz. - "Moved and voted that a committee of three be elected to prepare and have printed, in suitable form, a history of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebration, said committee to have full power to proceed in accordance with their best judgment to carry same to completion. The following committee was elected: Dr. Josiah M. Stanley Rev. Josiah C. Kent Dr. John L. Coffin" At first thought it seemed a simple matter to collect the data and arrange them in proper form for publication. But when it was discovered that the history of the anniversary was really a history of the town - made so by the character and scope of Rev. J.C. Kent's address - the committee began to realize the magnitude of the task which they had been called upon to perform. Mr. Kent was the orator of the occasion, and his oration was a resume of Northborough's history, from the time of her earliest settler to the time of her anniversary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Northborough, in Various Publications and Discourses Northborough is the youngest of the four Borough towns, not having been incorporated till 1766; although it became a precinct, known as the Second Precinct in Westborough, twenty-two years before; viz., October 20, 1744, O. S., answering to October 31, N. S. It did not acquire the rank or enjoy the full immunities of a town till the commencement of the Revolutionary war, when, by a general act of the Provincial Congress, all incorporated districts were declared to be entitled to all the privileges and immunities of towns. From 1717, when Westborough, then including the principal part of Northborough, was incorporated, till 17-14, the inhabitants of the whole district formed one corporate body, who met together at the same place, for the transaction of public business and for public worship, and made appropriations from the common treasury for the support of the minister, for the purposes of education, for the repair of the highways, &c., and, with the exception of public worship, this united action continued till 1766. Northborough contains, within its present limits, 10,150 acres - a little less than sixteen square miles. It is of irregular shape; its greatest length being from the north-east to the south-west. It lies principally in a valley, between the high lands of Marlborough on the east, of Berlin on the north, and of Shrewsbury and Boylston on the west. This interval spreads out to the south, and extends to the hills of Hopkinton and Upton, including a large part of Westborough. The river Assabet, which has its sources in the hills of Grafton and Shrewsbury, runs through the town, forming part of the boundary line on the south-east, between Westborough and Northborough. It receives several tributaries in its course, and furnishes water-power for two cotton-mills and several saw and grist-mills and comb shops. Its general course is north and north-east, leading to Feltonville and Assabet, and thence to Concord, forming the north branch of Concord river, which falls into the Merrimac at Lowell.
