Book excerpt: In search of "the best America there ever was," bestselling author and award-winning journalist Bob Greene finds it in a small Nebraska town few people pass through today—a town where Greene discovers the echoes of the most touching love story imaginable: a love story between a country and its sons. During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Nebraska, on troop trains en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. The tiny town, wanting to offer the servicemen warmth and support, transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen. Every day of the year, every day of the war, the Canteen—staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers—was open from five a.m. until the last troop train of the day pulled away after midnight. Astonishingly, this remote plains community of only 12,000 people provided welcoming words, friendship, and baskets of food and treats to more than six million GIs by the time the war ended. In this poignant and heartwarming eyewitness history, based on interviews with North Platte residents and the soldiers who once passed through, Bob Greene tells a classic, lost-in-the-mists-of-time American story of a grateful country honoring its brave and dedicated sons.

Book excerpt: The tension between wildlife protection under the Endangered Species Act and water management in the Platte River Basin has existed for more than 25 years. The Platte River provides important habitat for migratory and breeding birds, including three endangered or threatened species: the whooping crane, the northern Great Plains population of the piping plover, and the interior least tern. The leading factors attributed to the decline of the cranes are historical overhunting and widespread habitat destruction and, for the plovers and terns, human interference during nesting and the loss of riverine nesting sites in open sandy areas that have been replaced with woodlands, sand and gravel mines, housing, and roadways. Extensive damming has disrupted passage of the endangered pallid sturgeon and resulted in less suitable habitat conditions such as cooler stream flows, less turbid waters, and inconsistent flow regimes. Commercial harvesting, now illegal, also contributed to the decline of the sturgeon. Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River addresses the habitat requirements for these federally protected species. The book further examines the scientific aspects of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's instream-flow recommendations and habitat suitability guidelines and assesses the science concerning the connections among the physical systems of the river as they relate to species' habitats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-flying history is brought to life in this suspenseful story of an unknown and daring pilot named Jack Knight, who in 1921 flew his biplane straight into a blizzard over America's heartland and saved the US Air Mail Service in the process. When Jack Knight takes off in his biplane from North Platte, Nebraska, in 1921, hundreds of people crowd the airstrip. Is Jack transporting a famous passenger? Is he ferrying medicine for a sick child? Nope--Jack has six sacks of mail. For the past few years, biplanes like Jack's have been flying the mail only during daylight hours. Flying after dark is risky and crashes are too common, so lawmakers decide to cut funding for the US Air Mail Service. Outraged officials and pilots want to prove that flying the mail is best, so they concoct a plan--a coast-to-coast race. But when a crash, exhaustion, and a snowstorm ground three of the planes, Jack Knight becomes the race's only hope. All he has to do is fly all night long, leaning out of the plane to see, and navigate a blizzard over land he's never covered with an empty fuel tank. Will Jack pull it off and save the Air Mail Service?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with adventurous writing, sharp scrutiny, meticulous and audacious use of language, North of the Platte, South of the Niobrara: A Little Further into the Nebraska Sand Hills winds around its subjects the way the rivers and creeks of the Great Plains twist around humps of prairie grass, ranches and rock outcroppings. The ambitious goal of author Bryan Jones was to create a fresh understanding of the Nebraska Sand Hills from the inside. Surely he has done that, and more. He reflects with almost unbearable poignancy on war and its consequences, and with fierce advocacy on two beloved Nebraska poets. He brings humor and occasional cynicism to reflections about "the metaphysical and metaphorical aspects" of the Sand Hills, Ted Turner and other newcomers, the Sandoz family and other old-timers and a considerable chunk of Western history.

They will love these unforgettable moments with you! If you only buy one toddler coloring book, make sure it's this one! I'm Mark and together with my partner Jane we came up with the concept of The Learning Bugs, the fun characters who appear regularly throughout the book. Giggles the ladybug, Squiggles the caterpillar and Zapp the bee are not only entertaining but they engage and ask questions and give your child interesting facts. As parents ourselves we couldn't find a coloring book for young children that we were completely happy with so we decided to create our own. We then conducted research with over 500 fellow parents who helped shape the book you can purchase today. Welcome to the magical world of The Learning Bugs where kids play and have fun while learning at the same time. This will help them throughout their life as they build the habit of being inquisitive and asking questions. Why Buy This Book? Talented artists have hand-drawn unique illustrations that are beautiful but simple, cute and fun. Good value - we made sure to have plenty of pages (over 100). Illustrations are on one side only so you can tear them out to frame and keep. No issues with markers bleeding through the page and ruining an image underneath. Thick black lines for toddlers to try keep within the lines. Each page is a large 8.5 inches by 11 inches and printed on bright white paper. A book for toddlers but with some more advanced elements so the book can be kept for years. Your child will likely treasure this book for years to come. Our fun characters, the Learning Bugs, engage your child while being educational. Helps teach your kids that learning is enjoyable and not a chore. This book will help start to prepare them for school. Teaches the alphabet, they learn the letters and words beginning with that letter. We also have games where they can spot things in the drawing. We also have educational facts about the objects in the lovely drawings. Another game is how many things can you spot - to help with counting. This early learning activity book is aimed at boys and girls aged from 2 to 4 years old (especially toddlers, preschoolers, pre-k and kindergarten kids) but it is suitable for any child up to 6 who loves coloring. We have gone 'above and beyond' to create something special which we are very proud of. This lovingly created ABC coloring book is one you can come back to time and time again. We hope you enjoy this toddler coloring book and be sure to look out for more Learning Bugs books which your child can progress with as they grow.
