(GMI), El Paso, Texas conducted an intensive cultural resource survey of 9,350 acres on Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB), Otero County, New Mexico. A total of 31 previously unrecorded archaeological sites was documented. Nine of the newly discovered properties are attributable to prehistoric activities. One of the previously unrecorded sites relates to historic phase activities, fourteen represent military phase activities and seven are multicomponent sites. Three previously recorded sites were reassessed and updated. Seven additional previously recorded sites were revisited. Original documentation of these sites was considered to adequately reflect attributes of the properties and no modification to existing records was conducted. During October 1995, test excavations were conducted on four prehistoric sites. Three sites had been recorded during a previous survey (Sale et al. 1996) and one site was tested from the current survey. Excavations were designed to retrieve datable deposits from two previously undocumented stain features (MAR-166, HAR-223), define the form and extent of two previously tested hearth features (HAR-163, HAR-166), and determine the presence/absence of subsurface deposits within the two previously recorded Paleo-Indian loci (HAR-166, HAR-175). Sixteen of the 31 sites recorded during this survey are considered potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Fifteen military sites are considered ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. In addition to the archaeological sites, 239 isolated occurrences and/or features were documented.

A total of 7,284 acres was included in this inventory, including HAFB properties on the North Area, and Tularosa Peak on the Main Base, and Boles Wells Water System Annex. A total of 34 previously unrecorded archaeological sites was documented. Twenty-five of the newly discovered properties are attributable to prehistoric activities. Three of the previously unrecorded sites relate to paramilitary historic period activities and six represent military activities potentially predating 1950. Five previously recorded sites were reassessed and updated. Four additional previously recorded sites were revisited. Original documentation of these sites was considered to adequately reflect attributes of these properties and no modification to existing records was conducted. Twenty-eight of the 34 Sites recorded during this survey are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Six military sites are considered ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. In addition to the archaeological sites, 25 isolated features and 432 isolated artifact occurrences were also documented. Isolated features generally consist of concrete camera pads, camera target pests, and military structural remains. One stain feature of unknown affiliation is included in the isolated feature list due to uncertainties surrounding its nature. During May 1995, stain features on four prehistoric sites were test excavated and radiocarbon dates were secured for six of the features. Three of the features were dated to the El Paso phase, two to the Protohistoric period, and one was identified as modern.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the project, initially, was to determine site densities by environmental zone for management purposes. By the time the first draft of the report was completed, all base lands had been inventoried. This forced a reorientation of the projects goals to a more settlement pattern based analysis. Such an analysis includes not only sites recorded during the sample survey, but also all recorded sites on HAFB. During the sample survey, a total of 6,530 acres was surveyed on HAFB lands. Forty-four noncontiguous survey units totaling 5,441 acres were inventoried on the Main Base and seven noncontiguous survey units totaling 989 acres at the Boles Wells Water System Annex (BWWSA). The survey was conducted by Human Systems Research, Inc. (HSR), and field work was completed in May of 1995. The report submitted to Martyn Tagg, HAFB archaeologist, did not meet the criteria set forth in the scope of work and was rejected. Mr. Tagg contracted Geo-Marine, Inc. (GMI) to complete the report to HAFB specifications. The intensive cultural resources survey conducted by HSR documented 83 previously unrecorded archaeological sites, and re-evaluated two previously recorded archaeological sites for a total of 85 sites. Sixty sites were recorded on the Main Base and 25 sites at BWWSA. Fifty-four sites are prehistoric, four are historic, eight are military, and seventeen are multi component. One site recorded at BWWSA was not on HAFB property. In addition, several sites were revisited by the HAFB archaeologist and personnel from Geo-Marine, Inc. in order to re-evaluate and field check some of the earlier field work.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a cultural resources survey of approximately 220 miles of the proposed right-of-way for a buried fiber optics cable on White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico. The inventoried property is administered variously by the Department of the Army at White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Ease, and White Sands National Monument. Survey included land areas in Dona Ana, Otero, Lincoln, and Socorro counties. The survey area consisted of a 50-foot wide right-of-way traversing the missile range proper from south to north following existing roads. Approximately 203.3 miles (1232.12 acres) were composed of properties on White Sands Missile Range, 14.2 miles (86.06 acres) on Holloman Air Force Base, and 2.5 miles (15.15 acres) on White Sands National Monument. Personnel of Geo-Marine, Inc., conducted the survey during February and March 1994. As a result of the current project, 15 new archaeological sites and 74 isolated artifacts were located and documented along the planned installation route. Twelve previously recorded archaeological sites were relocated in the right-of-way corridor. These 27 total sites were inspected to assess potential impact from installation of the fiber optics cable. Of the 27 total sites that fall within the right-of-way, 25 are located on White Sands Missile Range and the remaining two are located on Holloman Air Force Ease. Of the 15 new sites, 10 are considered potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and five are considered to be of unknown eligibility at the present time.
