Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political scientist V. O. Key in 1949 described North Carolina as a "progressive plutocracy." He argued that in the areas of industrial development, public education, and race relations, North Carolina appeared progressive when compared to other southern states. Reconsidering Key's evaluation nearly sixty years later, contributors to this volume find North Carolina losing ground as a progressive leader in the South. The "new politics" of the state involves a combination of new and old: new opportunities and challenges have forced the state to change, but the old culture still remains a powerful force. In the eleven essays collected here, leading scholars of North Carolina politics offer a systematic analysis of North Carolina's politics and policy, placed in the context of its own history as well as the politics and policies of other states. Topics discussed include the evolution of politics and political institutions; the roles of governors, the judicial branch, interest groups, and party systems; and the part played by economic development and environmental policy. Contributors also address how geography affects politics within the state, region, and nation. Designed with students and interested citizens in mind, this collection provides an excellent introduction to contemporary North Carolina politics and government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical Reform describes a remarkable chapter in the American pro-democracy movement. It portrays the largely unknown leaders of the interracial Republican Party who struggled for political, civil, and labor rights in North Carolina after the Civil War. In so doing, they paved the way for the victorious coalition that briefly toppled the white supremacist Democratic Party regime in the 1890s. Beckel provides a nuanced assessment of the distinctive coalitions built by black and white Republicans, as they sought to outmaneuver the Democratic Party. She demonstrates how the dynamic political conditions in the state from 1850 to 1900 led reformers of both races to force their traditional society toward a more radical agenda. By examining the evolution of anti-elitist politics and organized labor in North Carolina, Beckel brings a new understanding to party factionalism of the 1870s and 1880s. As racial conditions deteriorated across America in the 1890s, North Carolina Republicans forged a fragile coalition with Populists. While this interracial pro-democracy movement proved triumphant by 1894, it carried the seeds of its ultimate destruction.

When the failing school was closed at the end of her first year, Brown remained to carry on. With virtually no resources save her own energy and determination, she founded Palmer Memorial Institute, a private secondary school for African Americans. In the fifty years during which she led the school, Brown built Palmer up to become one of the premier academies for African American children in the nation. Of the hundreds of African American schools operating in North Carolina around 1900, only Palmer gained national renown, outlasting virtually every other such school."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "Marshall and Leimenstoll have researched Day's remarkable life and work thoroughly, identifying a great quantity of his known and attributed furniture and interior woodwork, finding myriad published sources for his design elements, and examining a wide range of documents to trace his career and describe his world. Their research, along with the wealth of images of Day's unique furniture and interiors, constitutes a book of major, lasting value. "Catherine Bishir, author of North Carolina Architecture "This book, featuring the story and workmanship of Thomas Day, a free man of color in slaveholding North Carolina, is a fascinating addition to the corpus of literature concerning the anomalies and complexities of life in the Old South. A slaveholder as well as a skilled craftsman, Thomas Day occupied an unusual and privileged position. These fine illustrations of his craftsmanship help to explain why. "Daniel c. Littlefield, University of South Carolina "Thomas Day's creative genius, his skill in the design and fabrication of furniture and decorative woodwork, and the scope of his business establish him as a major founder of the North Carolina furniture industry. Book excerpt: The Odyssey of a Southerner, an interpretive biography of Gustavus Woodson Smith, takes a look at a life that spanned almost seventy-five years of the 19th century. The focus of this book lies in Smith's activity in the Civil War. Jefferson Davis's commission of Smith as a major general called attention to the problems of the Confederate system of appointments which made a sick man of unproven competence the second in command of the Confederate Army of the Potomac. Hudson uses a wide variety of sources including manuscript collections, government documents, official records, and newspapers to recreate the life of Smith.
