Book excerpt: Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""

Book Synopsis 1770-1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements by :
Download or read book 1770-1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1987 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest surviving federal enumerations of the Tennessee Country consist of the 1810 census of Rutherford County and an incomplete 1820 census. But since the first settlers arrived at the French Lick as early as 1779, the first forty years of settlement in the area we now call Tennessee are a blank, at least in the official enumerations. This work is an attempt to reconstruct a census of the Cumberland River settlements in Davidson, Sumner, and Tennessee counties, which today comprise all or part of forty Tennessee counties. To this end, Mr. Fulcher has abstracted from the public records all references to those living in the jurisdictions between 1770 and 1790. From wills, deeds, court minutes, marriage records, military records, and many related items, the author has put together a carefully documented list of inhabitants--virtually the "first" census of Tennessee.

Book Synopsis North Carolina Eastern Cherokee Indian Census 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914 by : Jeff Bowen
Download or read book North Carolina Eastern Cherokee Indian Census 1898-1899, 1904, 1906, 1909-1912, 1914 written by Jeff Bowen and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work at hand is a recasting and expansion of Mr. Bowen's 1998 publication by the same name. For the most part, the book is based on National Archives microfilm series M-595, roll #22; however, this expanded edition includes 84 pages of census transcriptions that are indecipherable on the microfilm. Thanks to the kind assistance of Archives personnel who copied the corresponding original census pages, the author was able to include them in this edition. The census records themselves concern the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from Cherokee, North Carolina, living on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary, and were enumerated by various Indian Agents in the employ of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Individuals enumerated in the successive censuses are descendants of the Cherokees who were not removed to Indian Territory during the period 1838-1839 in the migration known as the Trail of Tears. Mr. Bowen has transcribed each census in chronological order, and thereunder by household membership. While there is sometimes additional data, information provided in the census almost invariably gives the individual's name, family relationship, age, and sex--information that is critical in any genealogical research. The complete name index at the back of the volume refers to about 9,000 Eastern Cherokee who lived on the Qualla Boundary between 1898 and 1914. Finally, persons or institutions who purchased the first edition of this book or the author's two sequel series devoted to Qualla Boundary inhabitants (Eastern Cherokee Census, Cherokee, North Carolina, 1915-1922 and Eastern Cherokee Census, Cherokee, North Carolina, 1923-1929) should consider adding this reference to their collection.

Book excerpt: "While most genealogy books focus on original records and primary sources, this title focuses on secondary sources that have proliferated because of the growth of genealogy. It identifies and explains the vast number of published genealogical sources, acting both as a guidebook and a bibliography to the printed material in the field. The introduction alone is a treasure trove of information, and should be called Genealogy Sources 101. Coverage includes encyclopedias, gazetteers, indexes, abstracts, histories, biographies, military sources, periodicals, and much more. Appendixes include CD-ROMs for family historians, major genealogical libraries in the Inited States, and a list of genealogical publishers and booksellers. This monumental source is highlyrecommended in all libraries for the beginner or expert ".--"Outstanding Reference Sources : the 1999 Selection of New Titles", American Libraries, May 1999. Book Synopsis First Census of Kentucky, 1790 by : Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh
Download or read book First Census of Kentucky, 1790 written by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh and published by . This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Also included at the end of the book are the "Land and Tax List of King George County [VA], 1782;" "Personal Tax List of Fayette County, 1788;" "Personal Tax List No. 2 of Fayette County, 1787;" "Land Tax List of Prince William County [VA], 1784;" and the "Land Tax List of Charles City County, 1787." More than 10,000 names listed in this work. Paperback, (1940), repr. 2000, 2012, Alphabetical, viii, 118 pp.
