Book excerpt: Chauncey de Leon Canfield (1843-1909) first published "The diary of a forty-niner" in 1906, and 1,200 of the 2,000 copies in that edition were burned. Joseph Gaer's Bibliography of California literature, 20 describes this book as written in the form of a diary, but fictional.' The diary of a forty-niner (1920) reprints Canfield's 1906 publication. It purports to be the diary of Alfred T. Jackson, of Litchfield County, Connecticut, during his days as a gold prospector, 1850-1852. Jackson offers firsthand accounts of Nevada City and neighboring Rock Creek; descriptions of Grass Valley, North and South Yuba Valleys, and the Sierra Mountains; details of gold mining with accounts of pioneer overland crossings, and foreign mineworkers (including Chinese). Entries concerning Jackson's personal life include details of his courtship of a French woman in the camps.

Book excerpt: On July 29, 1849, after an eight-year courtship, two young schoolteachers were married in a small town in northern Vermont. Their story could easily have been lost to history, except that Alfred and Chastina Rix had the foresight to begin recording their observations in a joint journal. Their unique husband-and-wife account, which captures the turbulence of life and events during the gold rush era, is also a personal--and compelling--chronicle of a singular family's separation and reunion. When the Rixes began their journal, abolition, temperance, and the westward movement dominated New England culture and politics. Stricken with "gold fever," Alfred headed to California, while Chastina stayed behind. Alone with their young son in Vermont, Chastina continued the journal, describing her loneliness and fatigue as she labored to maintain the household, and summarizing Alfred's frequent letters. After establishing himself economically in San Francisco, Alfred urged his wife to join him. Chastina and their two-year-old son traveled by ship, via Panama, to California, where the couple resumed their journal, continuing the pattern of alternating entries and detailing life in the burgeoning city. Alfred's concluding notes at the end of the journal are an abrupt reminder that, just as now, life in the middle of the nineteenth century could bring unexpected and personal tragedy. In her careful editing of the journal, Lynn A. Bonfield has preserved its original spelling and punctuation while enriching the story with photographs and insightful annotations. Her lively chapter introductions place the journal in the context of both New England and California history and culture.

Book excerpt: Volume (168 p.) by Cunningham concerning his travels from New York to California and life in Chile from Sept. 12, 1852 to Aug. 3, 1854. He provides a detailed account of his voyage via Cape Horn, Sept. 13, 1852-Mar. 12, 1853, including weather conditions, a list of crew and officers, ship activities, and geographical sites. He arrives in San Francisco and visits sites of the city (including gambling halls, Chinatown, and ships recently arrived to the city), contacts old acquaintances from Boston, and seeks work as an engineer. Employment, mining, and business ventures take him to other Calif. cities, such as Sacramento, Shasta, and Colusa. Discouraged after a mining venture in the "noisy, rowdy, drunken" mining camp "Forktown" along the Pit River, and without job prospects, he returns to San Francisco, growing tired of Calif. Finally, Cunningham sails to Valparaiso, Chile, on the clipper-ship Spray, lands a job as a surveyor, and travels throughout the country. His journal entries from Chile describe not only the physical characteristics, but life there and the people as well. Three poems or songs are included at the end of the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Year of Mud and Gold is a collection of over two hundred excerpts from letters and diaries of ordinary men and women caught up in the rapid transformation of San Francisco during its gold rush heyday, 1849?50. Together these accounts render a rich mosaic of San Francisco?s metamorphosis from a small Mexican outpost into a rough-and-tumble boomtown filled with gamblers and prostitutes, evangelists and entrepreneurs?men, women, and children from all parts of the world, arriving in California with the dream of striking it rich. ø The correspondents come from a variety of economic and social backgrounds. Some are barely literate, while others write as well as the finest authors of nineteenth-century travel literature. Their writings address a broad range of concerns, from business prospects and consumer prices to social mores and popular amusements. The letters and diaries also hold clues to processes central to frontier history: the Americanization of Hispanic California, the stresses that migration placed on individuals and families, the fluidity of boomtown economies, and the nature of gender and race relations in an urban population of immigrants.
