Discouraged after a mining venture in the "noisy, rowdy, drunken" mining camp "Forktown" along the Pit River, and without job prospects, he returns to San Francisco, growing tired of Calif. Finally, Cunningham sails to Valparaiso, Chile, on the clipper-ship Spray, lands a job as a surveyor, and travels throughout the country. His journal entries from Chile describe not only the physical characteristics, but life there and the people as well. Three poems or songs are included at the end of the volume.
