Book excerpt: SPECIAL REPORT TD Economics November 15, 2012 THE SHALE SHIFT Exploring the impact of shale gas on the U. S. economy Highlights • The advent of shale gas production in the U. S. has already changed the game for the North American natural gas market. [...] It has reversed the stagnating trend in U. S. natural gas production, reduced the need for imports and lowered the U. S. price of natural gas relative to other fuels and prices elsewhere in the world. [...] The advent of shale gas production in the U. S. has already changed the game for the North American natural gas market. [...] Technical advances in natural gas extraction over the past decade resulted in the doubling of the estimated supply of recoverable natural gas in the U. S. from 2009 to 2011. [...] The produc- tion of natural gas from shale using a combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling has rejuvenated the natural gas industry in the United States, reversing stagnating production trends (see Chart 1) and dramatically reducing the need for imports.

Book Synopsis The Impact of the North American Shale Gas Revolution on Regional Natural Gas Markets by : Jiang-Bo Geng

This book was released on 2016 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of the North American shale gas revolution on price movement regimes in the North American and European gas markets, using the Markov regime-switching model. It then measures price spreads between oil and gas from 1998 to 2015 to identify the impact of the revolution on the relationship between oil and regional gas prices. The results show that the typical movement regime of Henry Hub prices changes from 'slightly upward' to 'sharply downward'. In addition, the clear seasonal effect of Henry Hub prices has disappeared after the shale gas revolution. The typical movement of national balancing point (NBP) prices has changed gradually from a 'sharply up-ward' regime to the alternative regimes between 'sharply downward' and 'slightly upward', tending to follow oil prices. This indicates that the shale gas revolution has had little impact on NBP price movement. Meanwhile, Henry Hub prices have decoupled from WTI prices, while NBP and Brent prices have continued to exhibit a long-term equilibrium level around which they have swung in the short timeframe since the shale gas revolution. Pertinent energy policy makers and energy market participants should pay attention to these changes and adjust their trade, production and investment strategies accordingly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper attempts to understand the price dynamics of the North American natural gas market through a statistical survey that includes an analysis of the variables influencing the price and volatility of this energy market. The analysis develops a theoretical model for the conditional reactions to weekly natural gas inventory reports, and develops an extended theory of errors in natural gas inventory estimates. The central objective of this thesis is to answer the fundamental question of whether the volatility of natural gas futures are conditional on the season or the level of the natural gas in inventory and how accurate are analysts at forecasting the inventory level. Commodity prices are volatile, and volatility itself varies over time. I examine the role of volatility in shortrun natural gas market dynamics and the determinants of error in inventory estimates leading to this variance. I develop a structural model that equates the conditional volatility response to the error made in analyst forecasts, inherently relating analyst sentiment to volatility and price discovery. I find that in the extremes of the inventory cycle (i.e., near peak injection/withdraw) that variance is particularly strong, and significantly higher than non-announcement days. The high announcement day volatility reflects larger price changes. With statistical significance, we can conclude that when the natural gas market is under-supplied, the near-term Henry Hub Natural Gas futures contract becomes nearly twice as volatile than in an oversupplied market. Furthemore, analysts are more prone to make errors in their estimates of weekly inventory levels around these same time periods. Natural gas is an essential natural resource and is used in myriad aspects of the global economy and society. As we look to develop more sustainable energy policies, North America's abundant clean-burning natural gas will hold an essential role in helping us to secure our future energy independence. An ability to understand the factors influencing it is supply and demand, and thus price, are and will continue to be essential.

Book excerpt: The Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) was established in 1976 at Stanford University to provide a structural framework within which energy experts, analysts, and policymakers could meet to improve their understanding of critical energy problems. The ninth EMF study, North American Natural Gas Markets, was conducted by a working group comprised of leading natural gas analysts and decision-makers from government, private companies, universities, and research and consulting organizations. The EMF 9 working group met five times from October 1986 through June 1988 to discuss key issues and analyze natural gas markets. This third volume includes technical papers that support many of the conclusions discussed in the EMF 9 summary report (Volume 1) and full working group report (Volume 2). These papers discuss the results from the individual models as well as some nonmodeling analysis related to US natural gas imports and industrial natural gas demand. Individual papers have been processed separately for inclusion in the Energy Science and Technology Database.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precipitous fall in oil prices, continued geopolitical instability and the ongoing global climate negotiations are witness to the dynamic nature of energy markets. In a time of so much uncertainty, understanding the implications of the shifting energy landscape for economic and environmental goals and for energy security is vital. The World Energy Outlook 2015 (WEO-2015) will present updated projections for the evolution of the global energy system to 2040, based on the latest data and market developments, as well as detailed insights on the prospects for fossil fuels, renewables, the power sector and energy efficiency and analysis on trends in CO2 emissions and fossil-fuel and renewable energy subsidies.

Lovejoy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the processes of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, once overlooked deposits of natural gas in shale formations have become economically viable to extract. In the past decade, energy companies have rushed to produce this newly available resource. Energy economists believe that this influx of shale gas will lead to lower, more stable natural gas prices, reduce our country's dependence on foreign oil and reduce the use of coal for electricity generation. However, environmental advocates are concerned that shale gas production comes at too high an environmental price through groundwater contamination and methane emissions. This paper analyzed the relationship between shale gas production and natural gas prices through a fixed effects regression model. Results of the model indicated that state-level variations in natural gas supply were not sufficient to affect prices set at the national level. In terms of policy implications, the United States must be deliberate in deciding the role of shale gas in U.S. energy policy. Full-blown investment in shale resources should be delayed until the environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing are more fully understood and appropriate precautions are put in place. In addition, if natural gas is to be used as a "bridge fuel," care must be taken to ensure the expansion of natural gas does not undermine investments in alternative energy sources.
