This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latest figures suggest that approximately 20% of the world's population of six billion is malnourished because of food shortages and inadequate distrib ution systems. To make matters worse, it is estimated that some 75 billion metric tons of soil are removed annually from the land by wind and soil ero sion, much of it from agricultural land, which is thereby rendered unsuitable for agricultural purposes. Moreover, out of a total land area under cultivation 9 6 of approximately 1. 5 x 10 ha, some 12 x 10 ha of arable land are destroyed and abandoned worldwide each year because of unsustainable agricultural practices. Add to this the fact that the world population is increasing at the rate of a quarter of a million per day, and the enormity of the task ahead becomes apparent. To quote the eminent wheat breeder E. R. Sears, It seems clear that plant geneticists can look forward to an expanded role in the 21st century, particularly in relation to plant improvement. The suc cess of these efforts may go a long way towards determining whether the world's increasing billions of humans will be adequately fed. Food for an ever-increasing population will have to be produced not only from an ever-diminishing, but from what will become an ever-deteriorating land resource unless justifiable environmental concerns are taken into account.

Book Synopsis Biotechnological Approaches to Barley Improvement by : Jochen Kumlehn
Download or read book Biotechnological Approaches to Barley Improvement written by Jochen Kumlehn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an up-to-date overview of biotechnologically oriented barley research. It is structured into two major sections: the first focusing on current agricultural challenges and approaches to barley improvement, and the second providing insights into recent advances in methodology. Leading scientists highlight topics such as: the global importance of barley; genetic diversity and genebanks; domestication; shoot and inflorescence architecture; reproductive development; mineral nutrition; photosynthesis and leaf senescence; grain development; drought tolerance; viral and fungal pathogens; phytophagous arthropods; molecular farming; sequence resources; induced genetic variation and TILLING; meiotic recombination; Hordeum bulbosum; genome-wide association scans; genomic selection; haploid technology; genetic engineering; and whole plant phenomics. Providing comprehensive information on topics ranging from fundamental aspects to specific applications, this book offers a useful resource for scientists, plant breeders, teachers and advanced students in the fields of molecular and plant cell biology, plant biotechnology, and agronomy.

Book Synopsis Plant Tissue Culture by : Sant Saran Bhojwani
Download or read book Plant Tissue Culture written by Sant Saran Bhojwani and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1986 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tremendous accumulation of information on plant tissue culture is making it extremely difficult for anyone to keep fully abreast with the literature even in his own specialised area. Therefore, the authors have compiled a bibliography of plant tissue culture as a ready reference for those who are already working in this field, and have also made the task easier for those who have become interested in plant tissue culture. The idea of preparing the bibliography was conceived after completing the book Plant Tissue Culture: Theory and Practice (Elsevier, 1982). Recognition of the various potential industrial applications of plant biotechnology has considerably enhanced the importance of plant tissue culture (PTC), as the latter holds a pivotal position in the realisation of the final goal of crop improvement via cell manipulation and multiplication. It is also becoming increasingly popular in basic studies in plant sciences. Consequently there has been an explosion in the literature on PTC since 1970. A distinctive feature of the present compilation is that it covers all aspects of PTC of higher plants, including Gymnosperms.

Book Synopsis Cells and Tissues in Culture Methods, Biology and Physiology by : E. N. Willmer
Download or read book Cells and Tissues in Culture Methods, Biology and Physiology written by E. N. Willmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 843 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cells and Tissues in Culture: Methods, Biology, and Physiology, Volume 3 focuses on the applications of the methods of tissue culture to various fields of investigation, including virology, immunology, and preventive medicine. The selection first offers information on molecular organization of cells and tissues in culture and tissue culture in radiobiology. Topics include cellular organization at the molecular level, fibrogenesis in tissue culture, effect of radiation on the growth of isolated cells, and irradiation of the selected parts of the cell. The publication then considers the effects of invading organisms on cells and tissues in culture and cell, tissue, and organ cultures in virus research. The book elaborates on antibody production in tissue culture and tissue culture in pharmacology. Discussions focus on early attempts at in vitro studies, tissue culture in the study of pharmacologically active agents, and methods of assessment of drug activity. The text also reviews invertebrate tissue and organ culture in cell research; introduction and methods employed in plant tissue culture; and growth, differentiation and organogenesis in plant tissue and organ cultures. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in the culture of cells and tissues.
