Referring to the challenges faced by architects the world over to create buildings and cities that are sustainable and inclusive, it is a theme that has particular resonance in the world's northernmost regions, where many look to find benchmarks of innovation and problem-solving. Edited by David Sokol, each of the Nordic region's foremost architectural practices is presented through beautiful original imagery of their most iconic works, as well as insightful conversations with each architectural office.

Book excerpt: In recent years, many Nordic architects have returned to the materials used by their modernist forbearers (Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Jørn Utzon)--materials such as brick, pine, granite and concrete--developing a new regionialist idiom for Norway that has garnered much acclaim around the world. New Nordic Architecture & Identity offers a critical exploration of the current global interest in Nordic-ness, attempting to determine whether certain special "Nordic" features recur in architecture, and whether this involves a fundamental formal idiom that is regularly reinterpreted. Is there a Nordic architectural identity? And if so, how has this Nordic identity developed in relation to the rest of the world? This volume looks at buildings by Snøhetta, Jarmund/Vignaes, Lassila Hirvilammi, Johan Celsing, Lundgaard & Tranberg, Bjarke Ingels Group and Studio Granda, highlighting their new uses of "traditional" Nordic materials.

Showcasing their latest works, including as-yet unbuilt competition entries, this book gives an incomparable view of the present and future of the new wave in Nordic architecture. Starring studios such as BIG, Snøhetta and sandellsandberg are already claiming their share of the global market with important assignments in South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the USA, suggesting warm winds blowing from the North. Overarching themes framed by the interviews with featured offices, are the broader definition of sustainability and the mission to save the Nordic welfare state. Whether it be schools in Finland, community centers in Denmark and kindergartens in Sweden, or cultural institutions in Norway and Iceland, the resolute Nordic minds are invested in social and cultural integration and sustainable urban life.

Book excerpt: Translated by Thomas McQuillan Architecture is a manifestation of the environment in which it is placed, observes distinguished architect and theoretician Christian Norberg-Schulz. A simple enough observation, but one that becomes subtle and nuanced in this landmark book which attempts to define, for the first time, what Nordic building really is. Norberg-Schulz begins by contrasting the natural world of the North with that of the Mediterranean, the Nordic unendingness against the sun-saturated and homogeneous South. Using themes such as "natural," "domestic," "universal," and "foreign," he finds the architecture of both regions sensibly related to their environments; but whereas the South lends itself to abstraction, the North is marked by variation, openness, and dynamism—by low light, forests, and space. Exploring the ways built experience "takes place," Norberg-Schulz charts the distinctive character of land and climate that distinguishes Denmark's, Sweden's, Finland's, and Norway's architectural traditions from each other and from those to the South. While each of these countries might be said to share regional traits, Norberg-Schulz identifies differences (the cultivated and closely detailed landscape and architecture of Denmark, the dramatic, structured forms of Norway) that allow him to account for the way individual Nordic architectures evolved.

Book excerpt: Modernism was instrumental in the development of twentieth and twenty-first century Scandinavian architecture, for it captured a progressive, urbane character that was inextricably associated with, and embraced the social programmes of the Nordic welfare states. Recognized internationally for its sensitivity and responsiveness to place and locale, and its thoughtful use of materials and refined detailing, Nordic architecture continues to evolve and explore its modernist roots. This new book covers the romantic and classical architectural foundations of Nordic modernism; the development of Nordic Functionalism; the maturing and expansion of Nordic modern architecture in the post-war period; international influences on Scandinavian modernism at the end of the twentieth century and finally, the global and local currents found in contemporary Nordic architecture. Superbly illustrated with 100 colour images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide an alternative post-Western perspective to the history of contemporary architecture. It puts forward detailed critical analyses of various areas of the world, including Europe, Latin America, Africa, China, Australia, India and Japan, where particular movements of architecture have developed as active ‘political acts’. The authors focus on a broad spectrum of countries, architectures and architects that have developed a design approach closely linked to the building context. The concept of context is broad and includes various economic, social, cultural, political and natural aspects. In all cases, the architects selected in this book have chosen to view context as an opportunity. However, each architect has considered certain specific aspects of context: some have been very attentive to the social context, others to material aspects or typological issues, and still others to aspects related to political visions or economic factors. The analysis critically highlights interesting, creative and respectful design approaches towards local conditions, such as sustainability in Nordic Europe, climate-conscious design in Africa, and the ‘bottom-up’ sensitivity of India. The book’s main aim is to retrace, through both theoretical arguments and case studies, the debate that focuses on politics and the environment. Thanks to its valuable examples, this book strives to make a conscious contribution to establishing a bulwark against the current ‘flattening-out’ processes that architecture is experiencing. This book will be of relevance to researchers, teachers and students interested in the history of architecture, architecture and planning, and postcolonial studies.

Book excerpt: The challenges of the global climate crisis are heightened in large part by a pervasive uncertainty regarding how architects and de-signers can address this challenge most effectively. In a situation where action is needed, but the correct strategies remain un-known, it is essential for architects to share their experiences and knowledge as broadly as possible. They must seek out perspectives that can help them overcome these impasses. When climate change was put at the top of the international environmental agenda more than a decade ago, Scandinavian countries were ready and able to respond quickly and methodically. Today, Scandinavia is still on the forefront of sustainable development, reorienting cultural engagement and economic growth to face climate change. The experience and knowledge accumulated by architects from Denmark, Norway and Sweden have the potential to enrich the exchange of ideas that is vital to a shift towards holistic thinking and sustainable architectural practice. In this book, essential aspects of sustainability in architecture and planning are approached from many diverse perspectives. They exemplify the breadth and depth of explorations underway. The collection of writings is based on six years of visits made to the three Scandinavian countries, and sustained engagements with the schools of architecture in the capital cities of Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. The book aims to illuminate lessons being learned by architects in Scandinavia, that are also relevant in a global perspective. The main drivers of sustainability are highlighted through case studies that cover all scales from planning and infrastructure to buildings and components. The cases illustrate central themes such as energy, lifecycles, industrialization, durability, transformation, and history. More acutely architectural topics such as adaptability, integrated design, and architectural education/tradition further permeate the cases. At the same time, the projects exempli-fy the best practices of sustainable architecture in Scandinavia in-cluding housing, offices, cultural buildings, and urban development.
