Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nora-Square-Accounts The thunderstorm did one good thing when it reduced two little boys, tired and cross after a long July day and in the difficult hour before bed, to doc ile, nuzzling lambs. They had been teasing and cross all afternoon, but the first mutter of thunder brought them to heel. After that they were no trouble at all. They stuck close to their sister, as if her great age (eleven years) and advanced wis dom were a buttress of strength, and when she pooh poohed at the storm and its dangers they were so much encouraged that she wrinkled her nose in a permanent expression of contempt for the elements. Nevertheless, there was a lump in her own throat which she had to fight down, for it meant that in other circumstances she would have liked to nuzzle and be pooh-poohed at herself. They had run through the house, fastening win dows in big empty parlors and in their bedrooms and their father's room. Then they left the front of the house to its usual imposing emptiness and took refuge in their ordinary domain at the back. When every gas jet in the dining-room was blazing and the shades drawn tight, Nora sat down on the haircloth sofa with her brothers clinging each to an elbow and began to talk about grandfather Du Vivier, whose portrait hung directly over her head. Book excerpt: In 1904, having known each other for only three months, a young woman named Nora Barnacle and a not yet famous writer named James Joyce left Ireland together for Europe -- unwed. So began a deep and complex partnership, and eventually a marriage, which endured for thirty-seven years. This is the true story of Nora, the woman who, transformed by Joyce's imagination, became Molly Bloom, arguably the most famous female character in twentieth-century literature. It is also the story of Ireland, a social history encapsulated in the vivid recreation of Joyce and his small Irish entourage abroad. Ultimately it is the portrait of a relationship -- of Nora's complicated, committed, and at times shocking relationship with a hardworking, hard drinking genius and with his work. In NORA: THE REAL LIFE OF MOLLY BLOOM, the award-winning biographer Brenda Maddox has given us a powerful new lens through which to see both James Joyce and the woman who was in turn his inspiration and his salvation.

Book Synopsis Nora Heysen: A Portrait by : Anne-Louise Willoughby
Download or read book Nora Heysen: A Portrait written by Anne-Louise Willoughby and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hahndorf artist Nora Heysen was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize, and Australia's first female painter to be appointed as an official war artist. A portraitist and a flower painter, Nora Heysen's life was defined by an all-consuming drive to draw and paint. In 1989, aged 78, Nora re-emerged on the Australian art scene when the nation's major art institutions restored her position after years of artistic obscurity. Extensively researched, and containing artworks and photographs from the painter's life, this is the first biography of the artist, and it has been enthusiastically embraced by the Heysen family. This authorized biography coincides with a major retrospective of the works of Nora and her father, landscape painter Hans Heysen, to be held at the National Gallery of Victoria in March 2019.
