Book excerpt: 'We have to shift from a mindset of shame, which sees anxiety as evidence of brokenness, to a mindset of curiosity, which recognizes that anxiety is evidence of our sensitive heart, our imaginative mind and our soul's desire to grow towards wholeness.' Three million people are thought to suffer from anxiety in the UK, and it is an issue that affects a growing number of people across all ages. For anyone troubled by obsessive thoughts, insomnia and other manifestations of anxiety, counsellor Sheryl Paul offers shelter in the storm. In The Wisdom of Anxiety, Paul reveals that anxiety, like any emotion, is a signal - a clear bodily invitation to heal and renew your trust in your choices, self-image and core values. Weaving together practical exercises with personal stories, Paul offers medication-free approaches for accessing the gifts in different kinds of anxiety, and especially the anxiety summoned by life's transitions, for example a career change, becoming parents or becoming carers for loved ones. Chapters include recognising the symptoms of anxiety, its origins, the myth of 'normal', the expectation of happiness and a timeline of healing that includes exercises for the body and mind. There are also chapters on parenting in an age of anxiety and the vulnerability of connection and relationships.

Book excerpt: I am a 47-year-old respectable, ordinary woman. I sold my home in Belfast at the height of the housing market boom. After taking advice from someone I thought to be financially astute, I invested most of the proceeds from the sale. This resulted in me being almost broke and homeless to boot. Consequently, I found myself moving into a hostel in Belfast. My story, in journal form, gives an insight into how this affected my life. I fell into depression, was prescribed anti-depressants, drank to excess on an almost daily basis, but eventually, slowly, began the fight to get out. The three months spent inside the hostel are a total revelation; a culture shock to say the least, and I impart a bit of the life within, providing detailed accounts of horrors of which the outside world is unaware. I lived amongst a cross section of Belfast's undesirables, learned how to survive, fought the system, and unexpectedly, made a friend along the way. I confide in only a handful of people and do my damndest to hide it from the rest. I can accept help from no one on the outside, for fear of jeopardising my fight to be re-housed. My story is as accurate an account of life in a hostel as it is possible to be. Nothing is left out. My determination is fierce and I eventually do go home. It all occurred in 2009. Della B. lives in South Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is inspired by ordinary people who achieve extraordinary things. http: //SBPRA.com/DellaB

The trilogy started with Mark Wilson in Secrets in the Attic, then his son, Carl, in Missing Pieces and now A Promise. Carl is a young man by age but possesses the courage, wisdom and faith of men twice his age. He is setting out to fulfill his promise to Amber to come back to the cold, dark, gray city and bring her back to the freedom of the settlement. The dangers that await him are much greater than before since he has raised the ire of the state by his rescuing many from their grip. In doing so he has slung mud in the face of the state and their government. There are many questions burning in Carl's mind like "Where is Amber?," "Is she free, imprisoned or ...?" David and Debbie Paton are the authors of A Promise, the final book of the trilogy. They have enjoyed writing Secrets in the Attic, Missing Pieces and now A Promise. During the day David is a Quality Inspector at a company in Red Wing, MN. Through writing these books he has discovered he likes reading because as a child he never did. Debbie enjoys doing things around their home and taking care of David. She loves to read and write poetry. Their books have reached out to all ages and they hope they have inspired people to read more. They hope you enjoy reading this book as much as they did writing it.

Book excerpt: In book 1 of the series, Left for Dead, during a record breaking polar vortex, snow storms inundated the South, leaving behind snow and ice more common to the Dakotas. An unknown enemy attacked the world, leaving society without modern technology. Without the internet, air travel, and few running vehicles of any kind, regional conflicts redefine modern warfare. Forces of darkness moved into the vacuum of power left in the wake of the global disaster, reeking havoc on an unsuspecting civilian populous. Book 4, Seeking Home picks up where book 3, Facing Darkness left off. Asher Latham, aka Polar Bear, and his small group of friends, who upon escaping their icy tomb inside the maximum security prison, swore an oath to keep a new moral code, have been working hard to reunite with their loved ones. They've managed to find several family members, but more are still missing. They've overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, fought and won against dark forces, who if left to their own devices, would turn the region into a tyrannical regime not seen since the dark ages. In book 3, they joined up with a group of church members hiding out inside Budcamp's RV dealership. Together, the new and much larger group have worked to salvage anything they might need from Nashville's largest mall, which sits under floodwaters. Armed men in a canoe have surprised one of their own, threatening his life. Will Asher and the others inside the mall come to his rescue in time? Will they find their still missing loved ones? Will they survive the winter?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You Don't Need a Passport to Move to New Mexico By Debora L. Carr When an east coast 'Jersey girl' moves west to her new 'home on the range' in Albuquerque, it does not take long to figure out that 'they do things differently in New Mexico'. She finds she has moved from a state that has perpetually been the butt of comedian's jokes, to a state that is generally not even recognized as such by a large portion of the US population. A compilation of firmly tongue-in-cheek vignettes regarding life in New Mexico as viewed through the eyes of an oftimes bewildered transplanted 'Easterner', the reader is invited on a rollicking ride through a state filled with weird wonders from moss rocks to the 'mummy truck' and populated with a cast of colorful characters such as Tat2 Tammy, the Masked Man of Central Avenue and Jesus on a Harley, to name but a few. Born out of the humorous newsletters Debora wrote and sent to friends and family members 'back east', the book relates tales of crazy drivers, odd customs, and strange roadway sights amid a landscape straight out of a Roadrunner cartoon. All are part of the Land of Enchantment that is known as New Mexico. About the Author Debora Carr was born and raised in the central New Jersey area, graduating from Rutgers University with a BA in Art Education in 1980 and became a successful professional graphic artist and packaging designer. She chose to accompany her parents when they decided to relocate to and retire in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2003, where she continued her chosen profession of graphic artist, working as a one-person art department for a small print shop. She continued to keep in touch with friends and family members 'back east' by means of periodic humorous newsletters which she called her 'Albu-Quirky Journals' in which she detailed her perspective on life in New Mexico. These collected essays were developed from those early newsletters and are written in a tongue-in-cheek style, emulating those written by two of her favorite authors, James Thurber and Mark Twain. She has a penchant for collecting stories and photos of all things weird, odd and unusual and is delighted to find that her new home state of New Mexico is overflowing with them.

Book excerpt: From a vital new voice in food ethics comes a smart, nuanced investigation into the current meat debate. Our future diet will be shaped by diverse forces. It will be shaped by novel technologies, by geopolitical tensions, and the evolution of cultural preferences, by shocks to the status quo— pandemics and economic strife, the escalation of the climate and ecological crises—and by how we choose to respond. It will also be shaped by our emotions. It will be shaped by the meat paradox. "Should we eat animals?” was, until recently, a question reserved for moral philosophers and an ethically minded minority, but it is now posed on restaurant menus and supermarket shelves, on social media and morning television. The recent surge in popularity for veganism in the UK, Europe and North America has created a rupture in the rites and rituals of meat, challenging the cultural narratives that sustain our omnivory. In The Meat Paradox, Rob Percival, an expert in the politics of meat, searches for the evolutionary origins of the meat paradox, asking when our relationship with meat first became emotionally and ethically complicated. Every society must eat, and meat provides an important source of nutrients. But every society is moved by its empathy. We must all find a way of balancing competing and contradictory imperatives. This new book is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of our empathy, the psychology of our dietary choices, and anyone who has wondered whether they should or shouldn't eat meat.

Book excerpt: From the moment Amy found out her brother was running for the presidency of the United States, she moved out of the family home and changed her last name. She loved her brother, but she didn’t love the limelight. All she wanted was freedom. The freedom to live her life the way she wanted without being in the shadow of the Secret Service all the time. Taking pictures was her passion, and that’s what she would do, and no one would stand in her way. Amy had taken a lot of great shots of the animals at the zoo, but if one more person asked her if she had permission to be there, she would scream. She just about had her camera in focus when another zoo employee approached her. He introduced himself as Dr. Dallas Dixon, and instead of being upset with her, he wanted her to take some pictures of a gorilla who had just given birth, but the baby wouldn’t live. It didn’t take long for Amy to realize that Dallas was a shifter and silverback to his troop. “You’re the silverback. The leader to her. I don’t know how that works, but you’re a shifter. Gorilla shifter and leader. That’s why that other man said that you could order her to do—Christ, oh mighty. Oh fucking no.” She turned her entire body and looked at the man sitting not ten feet from her. “You are not telling me that you have it in your impossibly small mind that I’m whatever they call a silverback’s mate, are you? No. Don’t answer that. I don’t need to, nor do I want to know.”
