Book excerpt: A fishy-penguin tale of friendship and coming of age. It's the story of a young penguin named Noodles on his first (very memorable) adventure at sea in the mysterious Southern Ocean. When his fun takes a turn and Noodles discovers he is lost, he tries to find his way home before darkness sets in, meeting an interesting cast of characters along the way. Noodles has nearly given up when he meets a friendly fish named Albie who knows the sea "like the back of my fin." They begin the journey together. But will they make it home to the penguin colony before dark? This charming and imaginative story is set against a backdrop of beautifully detailed watercolor illustrations that help bring the story to life.

Book excerpt: Lottie makes an unusual discovery while beachcombing one day. She's found a pup, but it's not your ordinary pup. Lottie quickly decides that she needs help. "Who will care for this little lost pup?" she asks along the beach. "Will you care for this little lost pup?" But no one wants her pup. Just when she is ready to give up, Lottie finds the perfect person to take care of her very special find. Children are kept guessing throughout this beautifully illustrated story what kind of creature Lottie has found while they learn about nature's different kinds of pups along the way. "A beautifully illustrated tale that's sure to appeal to animal lovers and budding environmentalists. . . . Reardon's realistic pastel-and-ink illustrations, populated with humans with a variety of skin tones, do an excellent job of hiding the identity of the pup and showing the adults' shocked expressions." --Kirkus Reviews "A fun, unexpected conclusion teaches kids not only about shore life, but about what makes a welcoming home for a stray. Kids who love beaches and parents who love thought-provoking messages will find "Who Will? Will You?" engrossing and fun." -- Diane Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: Biologist and TV scientist Professor Ben Garrod's fun, funny, informative and collectable series of books about dinosaurs is the most up-to-date on the market. This pocket-size series launches with Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops and Diplodocus, introduced by Steve Backshall, and is also available in audio download. The series continues with Velociraptor, Stegosaurus and Spinosaurus, introduced by Dr Jane Goodall. These are the most up-to-date dino books in 66 million years! Did you know that not all dinosaurs were green and scaly, some were ginger and feathered, or that they didn't all roar, they cooed like pigeons, or that the ultimate prehistoric predator was actually not a dinosaur? TV scientist, Ben Garrod, is proud to be a geek as he mixes hard science and humour to prove that science is for everyone. Looking at the evolutionary arms race, prey, predators, place, time, groups and species, Ben reveals new-look dinosaurs. Additional sections include: Ask an Expert, New Science and Fossil Finder as well as quizzes to test your dinosaur knowledge. Praise for Professor Ben Garrod: 'A celebration of everything that science is really about' NatSCA. 'A perfect primer for kids to learn more about the amazing "terrible lizards"' BBC Wildlife Magazine. 'He's the man! The genius is his knowledge; the genius is the man himself!' Chris Evans, Virgin Radio Breakfast Show. 'Shines a fresh, contemporary light on this ever-popular topic' The Bookseller. 'Collectable and eye-catching, with plenty of diagrams and illustrations' Books for Keeps.

Book excerpt: Learn about the most well-known battles (and little-known secrets) of World War I with author-illustrator Nathan Hale’s Treaties, Trenches, Mud, and Blood, a Hazardous Tale from the New York Times bestselling graphic novel series. “These books are, quite simply, brilliant. . . . Thrilling, bloody, action-packed stories from American history.” —New York Times In 1914, the world’s biggest countries (and some of its smallest, too) were gearing up for a massive fight. Land, history, geography—each country went to war for different reasons and with different resources. But most ended up the same: sending their young men to fight for their lives in the mud, on the sea, and in the air, in a conflict that would eventually claim more than nine million lives. World War I, “The Great War,” or “The War to End All Wars,” was fought along thousands of miles of frontline trenches, with mechanized weapons, and dangerous new weapons like machine guns and mustard gas. It left behind a world that was scarred, angry, and traumatized. Its horrifying lessons are still being examined today. Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales! Read them all—if you dare! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awaiting a TV talk show appearance, John Townley is quaking with dread. He has published a best-selling memoir about the Iraq War, a page-turner climaxing in atrocity. In a green room beyond the soundstage, he braces himself to confront the charismatic soldier at the violent heart of it. But John has never actually seen the man before—nor served in Iraq, nor the military. Even so, and despite the deception, he knows his fabricated memoir contains stunning truths. By turns comic, suspenseful, bitingly satirical, and emotionally potent, A Big Enough Lie pits personal mistruths against national ones of life-and-death consequence. Tracking a writer from the wilds of Florida to New York cubicles to Midwestern workshops to the mindscapes of Baghdad—and from love to heartbreak to solitary celebrity—Bennett’s novel probes our endlessly frustrated desire to grab hold of something (or somebody) true.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During and just after World War II, an influential group of American writers and intellectuals projected a vision for literature that would save the free world. Novels, stories, plays, and poems, they believed, could inoculate weak minds against simplistic totalitarian ideologies, heal the spiritual wounds of global catastrophe, and just maybe prevent the like from happening again. As the Cold War began, high-minded and well-intentioned scholars, critics, and writers from across the political spectrum argued that human values remained crucial to civilization and that such values stood in dire need of formulation and affirmation. They believed that the complexity of literature—of ideas bound to concrete images, of ideologies leavened with experiences—enshrined such values as no other medium could. Creative writing emerged as a graduate discipline in the United States amid this astonishing swirl of grand conceptions. The early workshops were formed not only at the time of, but in the image of, and under the tremendous urgency of, the postwar imperatives for the humanities. Vivid renderings of personal experience would preserve the liberal democratic soul—a soul menaced by the gathering leftwing totalitarianism of the USSR and the memory of fascism in Italy and Germany. Workshops of Empire explores this history via the careers of Paul Engle at the University of Iowa and Wallace Stegner at Stanford. In the story of these founding fathers of the discipline, Eric Bennett discovers the cultural, political, literary, intellectual, and institutional underpinnings of creative writing programs within the university. He shows how the model of literary technique championed by the first writing programs—a model that values the interior and private life of the individual, whose experiences are not determined by any community, ideology, or political system—was born out of this Cold War context and continues to influence the way creative writing is taught, studied, read, and written into the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 23, 2000, a ship en route from Brazil to China foundered off the coast of South Africa, spilling 1,300 tons of oil into the ocean and contaminating the habitat of 75,000 penguins. Local conservation officials immediately launched a massive rescue operation, and 12,500 volunteers from around the globe rushed to South Africa in hopes of saving the imperiled birds. Serving as a rehabilitation manager during the initial phase of the three-month effort, Dyan deNapoli--better known as "the Penguin Lady" for her extensive work with penguins--and fellow volunteers de-oiled, nursed back to health, and released into the wild nearly all of the over 19,000 affected birds. Now, at the tenth anniversary of the disaster, deNapoli recounts the extraordinary story of the world's largest and most successful wildlife rescue--From publisher description.
