Book excerpt: Demonstrating the role of nuclear medicine as a complementary technique to mammography and other imaging modalities for the diagnosis of breast cancer, Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast provides a comprehensive overview of scintimammography-an accurate, safe, and noninvasive imaging method for the evaluation of breast lesions and malignancies. Reveals the encouraging results of multicenter clinical trials in the U.S. and Canada using 99mTc sestamibi breast imaging for the diagnosis of primary breast carcinoma! Addressing nonsurgical sampling of nonpalpable breast lesions as an effective means of providing diagnostic and prognostic information, Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast discusses increasing the diagnostic value of mammography and its widespread use examines the reliability of FDG-PET and FDG-SPECT in detecting lymph node involvement and distant metastases reviews breast cancer imaging with monoclonal antibodies, including murine and bioengineered antibodies compares the benefits and limitations of Thallium-20l to 99mTc-sestamibi breast imaging in evaluating suspected malignancy assesses the clinical impact of scintimammography as an adjunctive test to mammography to improve the dependability of diagnoses considers the possibility of replacing axillary lymph node dissection in patients with small breast cancers with the sentinel node approach clarifies the importance of surgery in the multimodality treatment of breast cancer elucidates pathologic difficulties for breast cancer diagnosis and more! Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast serves as an essential reference for nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, breast surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists, gynecologists, pathologists, internists, and primary care physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray mammography screening is the current mainstay for early breast cancer detection. It has been proven to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage and to reduce the number of women dying from the disease. However, it has a number of limitations. These current limitations in early breast cancer detection technology are driving a surge of new technological developments, from modifications of x-ray mammography such as computer programs that can indicate suspicious areas, to newer methods of detection such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or biochemical tests on breast fluids. To explore the merits and drawbacks of these new breast cancer detection techniques, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences convened a committee of experts. During its year of operation, the committee examined the peer-reviewed literature, consulted with other experts in the field, and held two public workshops. In addition to identifying promising new technologies for early detection, the committee explored potential barriers that might prevent the development of new detection methods and their common usage. Such barriers could include lack of funding from agencies that support research and lack of investment in the commercial sector; complicated, inconsistent, or unpredictable federal regulations; inadequate insurance reimbursement; and limited access to or unacceptability of breast cancer detection technology for women and their doctors. Based on the findings of their study, the committee prepared a report entitled Mammography and Beyond: Developing Technology for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which was published in the spring of 2001. This is a non-technical summary of that report.

Written by Bruno D Fornage, a world-renowned leader in the fields of breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided interventions, it covers in detail techniques of freehand ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, placement of post-biopsy markers, localization of nonpalpable lesions, and percutaneous ablation of breast masses. A large part of the book describes the highly effective combined use of fine-needle aspiration and core-needle biopsy during the staging of breast cancer; this combination has been used successfully by the author at MD Anderson Cancer Center for 3 decades. Throughout the book, the author shares numerous tips and tricks, many of which have not been published before. With over 1300 figures and and 200 videoclips depicting ultrasound-guided procedures, Interventional Ultrasound of the Breast is the authoritative resource for breast imagers, interventional radiologists, surgical breast oncologists, pathologists, and anyone who embarks on ultrasound-guided breast biopsies and other breast procedures. In addition, the techniques described in this book are applicable to many other areas of the body, including the thyroid and soft tissues.

Book excerpt: Image-Guided Cancer Therapy: A Multidisciplinary Approach provides clinicians with in-depth coverage of the growing, dynamic field of interventional oncology. Combining the knowledge of expert editors and authors into one powerhouse reference, this book looks at tumor ablation, HIFU, embolic therapies, emerging technologies, and radiation therapy throughout the body (liver, bone, breast, gynecologic and prostate cancers, to name just a few) , and includes discussion of different imaging modalities. In the words of Peter Mueller, MD, author of the book’s Foreword: “... The senior authors are all world renowned experts in interventional oncology, which is another example of the high quality authorship and experience that is brought to this book. The later chapters discuss therapies that are simply not covered in any other source. Everyone who is doing or wants to do ablation therapies and interventional oncology will face a time when they will be asked to use their expertise in less used and less investigated areas. There is nowhere else where the reader can get information on the prostate, breast, and gynecologic areas, and especially pediatrics....This book is an outstanding contribution to the literature and will become a ‘must read’ for all physicians who are interested in Interventional Oncology.”

Field and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-22 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text describes a system of reporting breast fine needle aspiration biopsy that uses five clearly defined categories, each described by a specific term and each with a specific risk of malignancy. The five categories are insufficient/inadequate, benign, atypical, suspicious of malignancy and malignant. Each category has a risk of malignancy and is linked to management recommendations, which include several options because it is recognized that diagnostic infrastructure, such as the availability of core needle biopsy and ultrasound guidance, vary between developed and low and middle income countries. This text includes key diagnostic cytological criteria for each of the many lesions and tumors found in the breast. The cytopathology of specific lesions is illustrated with high quality photomicrographs with clear figure descriptions. Chapters also discuss current and potential future ancillary tests, liquid based cytology, nipple cytology and management. An additional chapter provides an overview of an approach to the diagnosis of direct smears of breast fine needle aspiration biopsies. The International Academy of Cytology Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytopathology provides a clear logical approach to the diagnosis and categorization of breast lesions by FNAB cytology, and aims to facilitate communication with breast clinicians, further research into breast cytopathology and related molecular pathology, and improve patient care.

Example vignettes allow the reader to assimilate the diagnostic principles in a case-based format. This volume provides comprehensive coverage of both surgical pathology and cytopathology of breast lesions. With a focus on malignant tumors, the full spectrum of inflammatory disorders, benign lesions, and hyperplasias are also covered in detail. Advantages and disadvantages of aspiration and core biopsy are discussed, as well as ancillary testing such as hormonal and molecular markers. With over 200 printed photomicrographs and a DVD-ROM offering all images in a downloadable format, this is an important resource for all anatomic pathologists.
