Book excerpt: When one ex-boyfriend gets married, a girl can laugh it off. With two, she begins to get nervous. But three? Three? Angie DiFranco is starting to take it personally. What is it about her that doesn't incite men to plunk down large sums of money in the name of eternal love? According to her one successfully married friend, men are like tight lids. One woman comes along, loosens him up, leaving him for the next woman to pop off the lid, no problem. After all, would Jennifer have landed Brad so easily without the Gwyneth factor? Suddenly Angie looks at Kirk, her current boyfriend, with new eyes. Kirk, whose last girlfriend loosened his lid by giving him The Ultimatum. Kirk, who suddenly seems primed to be popped right open. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mythologized as the era of the “good war” and the “Greatest Generation,” the 1940s are frequently understood as a more heroic, uncomplicated time in American history. Yet just below the surface, a sense of dread, alienation, and the haunting specter of radical evil permeated American art and literature. Writers returned home from World War II and gave form to their disorienting experiences of violence and cruelty. They probed the darkness that the war opened up and confronted bigotry, existential guilt, ecological concerns, and fear about the nature and survival of the human race. In Facing the Abyss, George Hutchinson offers readings of individual works and the larger intellectual and cultural scene to reveal the 1940s as a period of profound and influential accomplishment. Facing the Abyss examines the relation of aesthetics to politics, the idea of universalism, and the connections among authors across racial, ethnic, and gender divisions. Modernist and avant-garde styles were absorbed into popular culture as writers and artists turned away from social realism to emphasize the process of artistic creation. Hutchinson explores a range of important writers, from Saul Bellow and Mary McCarthy to Richard Wright and James Baldwin. African American and Jewish novelists critiqued racism and anti-Semitism, women writers pushed back on the misogyny unleashed during the war, and authors such as Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams reflected a new openness in the depiction of homosexuality. The decade also witnessed an awakening of American environmental and ecological consciousness. Hutchinson argues that despite the individualized experiences depicted in these works, a common belief in art’s ability to communicate the universal in particulars united the most important works of literature and art during the 1940s. Hutchinson’s capacious view of American literary and cultural history masterfully weaves together a wide range of creative and intellectual expression into a sweeping new narrative of this pivotal decade.

Book excerpt: The Fresh Voices series was inspired by a contest of the same name that identified high school writers interested in composing book-length works for young adults. Working with a professional editor, the young authors spent the summer learning about the book industry and meeting journalists while writing their individual books, both fiction and nonfiction. The four titles in this series represent the first four winners of the contest. Cole Hunter, professional smoke jumper, is changed forever when a wildfire takes the life of his best friend and leaves Cole without hearing. This, however, is just the start of his problems: medical complications lead to marital problems, and soon adultery, self-doubt, and the dissolution of love come to dominate this dramatic novel by a 17-year-old author. Ultimately it is the will of God that retrieves Cole and his wife from their fallen state, revealing the justice of His plan and demonstrating that under God, no sin is too big and no bridge too broken to restore.

Book excerpt: The deaths of the Moretti’s were so imprinted on Arabella’s heart, that all she ever wanted to do was honor their memory—particularly Maria’s, and the high school prom she never got to attend. At twenty-six, Arabella did not have a typical family dynamic, nor a way to change the past. But she did have an inherited family restaurant, and a promise to God. A pledge to purity. No sooner has she settled into the planning and preparations of Rock Haven’s annual formal event, held in her family’s restaurant, Arabella receives an unexpected visit from a blue-eyed traveler, making his way to a small town in Iowa. The encounter draws Arabella’s emotions into his intrigue and charm. And charm he does. Now confronted with her grappling emotions, Arabella must choose which is more important to her—the promise she made to God? Her family’s business? Or, the stranger that has managed to captivate her heart?

Book excerpt: This volume is designed to give librarians and teachers guidance on the subject of adoption and foster care—both as themes in children's literature and as issues affecting many students. To help librarians and teachers gain a deeper understanding of this sensitive subject, Family Matters: Adoption and Foster Care in Children's Literature takes a close look at 115 works of children's literature that have themes related to adoption and foster care, including many that have received the Newberry Award, Caldecott Award, or other prestigious honors from the American Library Association. Family Matters is not just a digest of titles. It is an expert resource for addressing adoption and foster care in the classroom, both as a literary subject and as a personal issue with students. The book opens with an historical overview of adoption and foster care, then reviews level-appropriate titles by age group—K-grade 2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8. Coverage includes discussions of the impact of adoption and foster care on normal development, as well as suggestions for safe language to use in the classroom, and fun, effective activities for each title.

For thirteen-year-old Jillian Robichaux, three things are sacred: bayou sunsets, her grandmother Nonnie’s stories, and the coastal Louisiana town of Boutin that she calls home. When the worst flood in a century hits, Jillian and the rest of her community band together as they always do—but this time the damage may simply be too great. After the local school is padlocked and the bridges into town condemned, Jillian has no choice but to face the reality that she may be losing the only home she’s ever had. But even when all hope seems lost, Jillian is determined to find a way to keep Boutin and its indomitable spirit alive. With the help of friends new and old, a loveable golden retriever, and Nonnie’s storytelling wisdom, Jillian does just that in this timely and heartfelt story of family, survival, and hope. In her stunning debut middle grade novel, Sarah Guillory has written a lush story about an indomitable girl fighting against the effects of climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historical narrative/memoir Child of Many, the author traces the lives of her paternal great-great-grandparents, Winifred and Captain Moses Davis, during the American Civil War, and her maternal Eastman lineage starting with the arrivals of the Mayflower and Confidence, bringing both lines to the present day. History buffs will identify with some of the events and famous relatives mentioned. The merging of the Davis and Eastman lines not only presents a fascinating view of the past, but also shows how connected we are through time and space. Readers may even be encouraged to discover their own heritage. Child of Many merges two family lineages through the founding of this country amid battles, conflict, and hardship, while weaving the intricacies of DNA-related traits, gifts, and characteristics inherited through the author’s ancestry. Her ancestors, named and unnamed, served their country well in the military, law, medicine, education, government positions, science and industry, and more. In researching those who came before, the author better understands her own presence in today’s world as she continues her healing from grief and fear.
