Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before now, biological systems could only be expressed in terms of linear relationships, however, as knowledge grows and new techniques of analysis on biological systems is made available, we are realizing the non-linearity of these systems. The concepts and techniques of nonlinear analysis allow for more realistic and accurate models in science. The Future of Pharmaceuticals: A Nonlinear Analysis provides an opportunity to understand the non-linearity of biological systems and its application in various areas of science, primarily pharmaceutical sciences. This book will benefit professionals in pharmaceutical industries, academia, and policy who are interested in an entirely new approach to how we will treat disease in the future. Key Features: Addresses a new approach of nonlinear analysis. Applies a theory of projection to chalk out the future, instead of basing on linear evolution. Provides an opportunity to better understand the non-linearity in biological systems and its applications in various areas of science, primarily pharmaceutical sciences. Helps change the thought process for those looking for answers to their questions which they do not find in the linear relationship approach. Encourages a broader perspective for the creative process of drug development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the United States military’s use of concepts from non-linear science, such as chaos and complexity theory, in its efforts to theorise information-age warfare. Over the past three decades, the US defence community has shown an increasing interest in learning lessons from the non-linear sciences. Theories, strategies, and doctrines of warfare that have guided the conduct of US forces in recent conflicts have been substantially influenced by ideas borrowed from non-linear science, including manoeuvre warfare, network-centric warfare, and counterinsurgency. This book accounts for the uses that the US military has made of non-linear science by examining the long-standing historical relationship between the natural sciences and Western militaries. It identifies concepts and metaphors borrowed from natural science as a key formative factor behind the development of military theory, strategy, and doctrine. In doing so, Nonlinear Science and Warfare not only improves our understanding of the relationship between military professional identity, professional military education, and changes in technology, but also provides important insights into the evolving nature of conflict in the Information Age. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, military science, US foreign policy, technology and war, and security studies.

Yorke developed an array of tools to help visualize the properties of dynamical systems, while Yorke found it useful to combine these various basic tools into one single package: Dynamics. The program together with this manual provides an introduction to and an overview of fundamental, sophisticated tools and numerical methods together with many simple examples. All numerical methods described in this handbook are implemented in the program, which is capable of, among others: iterating maps and solving differential equations; plotting trajectories; featuring an array of simple commands; printing a created picture in resolution higher than that of the screen. Requires a UNIX workstation running X11 graphics or a PC.

Book excerpt: Sport Science and Studies in Asia encourages readers to be reflective practitioners, as students or researchers, or thinkers of sports, to be independent seekers of future sport knowledge, and yet mindful and grounded in a full knowledge and awareness of the social, cultural and country-specific nuances of sports. It invites discussions and debates on a diversity of topics covered, and is suitable text for undergraduate and graduate study of sports in Asia. This publication hopes to “light the fuse” that will fuel enthusiasm of sports-associated outcomes as well as heighten sport interest among the more discerning consumers of sport, result in more extensive research and development in sports, generate greater spin-offs in sport innovation in terms of new training approaches and sport products, and a greater appreciation that sports and human kind are inseparable.

Book excerpt: Chaos theory deals with the description of motion (in a general sense) which cannot be predicted in the long term although produced by deterministic system, as well exemplified by meteorological phenomena. It directly comes from the Lunar theory — a three-body problem — and the difficulty encountered by astronomers to accurately predict the long-term evolution of the Moon using “Newtonian” mechanics. Henri Poincaré's deep intuitions were at the origin of chaos theory. They also led the meteorologist Edward Lorenz to draw the first chaotic attractor ever published. But the main idea consists of plotting a curve representative of the system evolution rather than finding an analytical solution as commonly done in classical mechanics. Such a novel approach allows the description of population interactions and the solar activity as well. Using the original sources, the book draws on the history of the concepts underlying chaos theory from the 17th century to the last decade, and by various examples, show how general is this theory in a wide range of applications: meteorology, chemistry, populations, astrophysics, biomedicine, etc.

The papers cover a wide range of topics but share common mathematical notions and investigation techniques. An introductory note on eight concepts of integrability has been added as a guide for the uninitiated reader. Both specialists and graduate students will find this update on the state ofthe art useful. Key points: chaos vs. integrability; solitons: theory and applications; dissipative systems; Hamiltonian systems; maps and cascades; direct vs. inverse methods; higher dimensions; Lie groups, Painleve analysis, numerical algorithms; pertubation methods.

Book excerpt: Through a series of examples from physics, engineering, biology and economics, this book illustrates the enormous potential for application of ideas and concepts from nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. The overlap with examples published in other books is virtually equal to zero. The book takes the reader from detailed studies of bifurcation structures of relativity simple models to pattern formation in spatially extended systems. The book also discusses the different perspectives that nonlinear dynamics brings to different fields of science.
