Download or read book A Non-linear Renewal Theory with Applications to Sequential Analysis II. written by STANFORD UNIV CALIF DEPT OF STATISTICS. and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analogue of Blackwell's renewal theorem is obtained for processes Z sub n = S sub n + xi sub n, where S sub n is the nth partial sum of a sequence X1,X2, ... of independent identically distributed random variables with finite positive mean and xi sub n is independent of X sub n+1, X sub n+2,.. and has sample paths which are slowly changing in a sense made precise below. As a consequence, asymptotic expansions up to terms tending to 0 are obtained for the expected value of certain first passage times. Applications to sequential analysis are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern theory of Sequential Analysis came into existence simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain in response to demands for more efficient sampling inspection procedures during World War II. The develop ments were admirably summarized by their principal architect, A. Wald, in his book Sequential Analysis (1947). In spite of the extraordinary accomplishments of this period, there remained some dissatisfaction with the sequential probability ratio test and Wald's analysis of it. (i) The open-ended continuation region with the concomitant possibility of taking an arbitrarily large number of observations seems intol erable in practice. (ii) Wald's elegant approximations based on "neglecting the excess" of the log likelihood ratio over the stopping boundaries are not especially accurate and do not allow one to study the effect oftaking observa tions in groups rather than one at a time. (iii) The beautiful optimality property of the sequential probability ratio test applies only to the artificial problem of testing a simple hypothesis against a simple alternative. In response to these issues and to new motivation from the direction of controlled clinical trials numerous modifications of the sequential probability ratio test were proposed and their properties studied-often by simulation or lengthy numerical computation. (A notable exception is Anderson, 1960; see III.7.) In the past decade it has become possible to give a more complete theoretical analysis of many of the proposals and hence to understand them better.

Download or read book Stopped Random Walks written by Allan Gut and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first encounter with renewal theory and its extensions was in 1967/68 when I took a course in probability theory and stochastic processes, where the then recent book Stochastic Processes by Professor N.D. Prabhu was one of the requirements. Later, my teacher, Professor Carl-Gustav Esseen, gave me some problems in this area for a possible thesis, the result of which was Gut (1974a). Over the years I have, on and off, continued research in this field. During this time it has become clear that many limit theorems can be obtained with the aid of limit theorems for random walks indexed by families of positive, integer valued random variables, typically by families of stopping times. During the spring semester of 1984 Professor Prabhu visited Uppsala and very soon got me started on a book focusing on this aspect. I wish to thank him for getting me into this project, for his advice and suggestions, as well as his kindness and hospitality during my stay at Cornell in the spring of 1985. Throughout the writing of this book I have had immense help and support from Svante Janson. He has not only read, but scrutinized, every word and every formula of this and earlier versions of the manuscript. My gratitude to him for all the errors he found, for his perspicacious suggestions and remarks and, above all, for what his unusual personal as well as scientific generosity has meant to me cannot be expressed in words.

The invited lectures and submitted contributions covered the three traditional subjects of the Prague Conferences introduced in their title, as well as lots of further applications of the probability theory and mathe matical statistics. Most of the presented lectures and contributions are published in the present Conference Transactions.
Book Synopsis Nonlocal Modeling, Analysis, and Computation by : Qiang Du
Download or read book Nonlocal Modeling, Analysis, and Computation written by Qiang Du and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of complexity, singularity, and anomaly using nonlocal continuum models are steadily gaining popularity. This monograph provides an introduction to basic analytical, computational, and modeling issues and to some of the latest developments in these areas. Nonlocal Modeling, Analysis, and Computation includes motivational examples of nonlocal models, basic building blocks of nonlocal vector calculus, elements of theory for well-posedness and nonlocal spaces, connections to and coupling with local models, convergence and compatibility of numerical approximations, and various applications, such as nonlocal dynamics of anomalous diffusion and nonlocal peridynamic models of elasticity and fracture mechanics. A particular focus is on nonlocal systems with a finite range of interaction to illustrate their connection to local partial differential equations and fractional PDEs. These models are designed to represent nonlocal interactions explicitly and to remain valid for complex systems involving possible singular solutions and they have the potential to be alternatives for as well as bridges to existing models. The author discusses ongoing studies of nonlocal models to encourage the discovery of new mathematical theory for nonlocal continuum models and offer new perspectives on traditional models, analytical techniques, and algorithms.

Book Synopsis Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues by : Fioralba Cakoni
Download or read book Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues written by Fioralba Cakoni and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2022-12-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse scattering theory is a major theme in applied mathematics, with applications to such diverse areas as medical imaging, geophysical exploration, and nondestructive testing. The inverse scattering problem is both nonlinear and ill-posed, thus presenting challenges in the development of efficient inversion algorithms. A further complication is that anisotropic materials cannot be uniquely determined from given scattering data. In the first edition of Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues, the authors discussed methods for determining the support of inhomogeneous media from measured far field data and the role of transmission eigenvalue problems in the mathematical development of these methods. In this second edition, three new chapters describe recent developments in inverse scattering theory. In particular, the authors explore the use of modified background media in the nondestructive testing of materials and methods for determining the modified transmission eigenvalues that arise in such applications from measured far field data. They also examine nonscattering wave numbers—a subset of transmission eigenvalues—using techniques taken from the theory of free boundary value problems for elliptic partial differential equations and discuss the dualism of scattering poles and transmission eigenvalues that has led to new methods for the numerical computation of scattering poles. This book will be of interest to research mathematicians and engineers and physicists working on problems in target identification. It will also be useful to advanced graduate students in many areas of applied mathematics.
