It has been pointed out [64] that turbulence spreading is responsible for the local turbulence intensity dependence on the global equilibrium properties, i.e., the system size, and, ultimately, for the size scaling of turbulent transport coefficients. In the present work, first we investigate the slab analysis [46] for the spatio-temporal evolution of the drift wave(DW) radial envelope and zonal flow(ZF) amplitude. The derived two-field DW-ZF description reduces to the well-known coherent four-wave modulation interaction model [13] when separating the pump wave and its side bands. Stationary solution of the resulting coupled partial differential equations in a simple limit suggests formation of DW-ZF solitons, due to competition between DW dispersion and nonlinear ZF modulation. It is shown that the hyperbolic-secant DW soliton structure can propagate at group velocity which depends on the envelope peak amplitude. Additional interesting physics, i.e., birth and death, collision, reflection of solitons, can be produced by effects of linear growth/damping, dissipation and equilibrium nonuniformities. Turbulence bursting or intermittency can also be understood within soliton dynamics. The propagation of soliton causes significant radial spreading of initially localized DW turbulence and therefore can affect transport scaling by increasing the radial turbulent region. Further discussion about the correspondence to the two-field DW-ZF description in toroidal geometry [14] will also be presented.

The experiment, conducted by Schaffner et al. [D. Schaffner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 135002 (2012)], nulls out the intrinsic mean flow in LAPD by limiter biasing. The model that I use in the simulation is an electrostatic reduced Braginskii two-fluid model that describes the time evolution of density, electron temperature, electrostatic potential, and parallel electron velocity fluctuations in the edge region of LAPD. The spatial domain is annular, encompassing the radial coordinates over which a significant equilibrium density gradient exists. My model breaks the independent variables in the equations into time-independent equilibrium parts and time-dependent fluctuating parts, and I use experimentally obtained values as input for the equilibrium parts. After an initial exponential growth period due to a linear drift wave instability, the fluctuations saturate and the frequency and azimuthal wavenumber spectra become broadband with no visible coherent peaks, at which point the fluctuations become turbulent. The turbulence develops intermittent pressure and flow filamentary structures that grow and dissipate, but look much different than the unstable linear drift waves, primarily in the extremely long axial wavelengths that the filaments possess. An energy dynamics analysis that I derive reveals the mechanism that drives these structures. The long k_II ~ 0 intermittent potential filaments convect equilibrium density across the equilibrium density gradient, setting up local density filaments. These density filaments, also with k_II ~ 0, produce azimuthal density gradients, which drive radially propagating secondary drift waves. These finite k_II drift waves nonlinearly couple to one another and reinforce the original convective filament, allowing the process to bootstrap itself. The growth of these structures is by nonlinear instability because they require a finite amplitude to start, and they require nonlinear terms in the equations to sustain their growth. The reason why k_II ~ 0 structures can grow and support themselves in a dynamical system with no k_II = 0 linear instability is because the linear eigenmodes of the system are nonorthogonal. Nonorthogonal eigenmodes that individually decay under linear dynamics can transiently inject energy into the system, allowing for instability. The instability, however, can only occur when the fluctuations have a finite starting amplitude, and nonlinearities are available to mix energy among eigenmodes. Finally, I attempt to figure out how many effective degrees of freedom control the turbulence to determine whether it is stochastic or deterministic. Using two different methods - permutation entropy analysis by means of time delay trajectory reconstruction and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition - I determine that more than a few degrees of freedom, possibly even dozens or hundreds, are all active. The turbulence, while not stochastic, is not a manifestation of low-dimensional chaos - it is high-dimensional.

Book excerpt: Turbulence in plasma surface interaction holds crucial uncertainties for its impact on material erosion in the operation of fusion reactors. In this thesis, the design, development and operation of a Thomson scattering diagnostic and its novel implementation with fast visual imaging created a versatile tool to investigate intermittently occuring plasma oscillations. Specifically, ballistic transport events in the plasma edge, constituting turbulent transport, have been targeted in this thesis. With the help of a custom photon counting algorithm, the conditional averaging technique was applied on Thomson scattering for the first time to allow spatial and pseudo-time-resolved measurements. Since plasma turbulence and the emerging transport phenomena are comparable in most magnetized devices, the diagnostic development and the results from the linear plasma device PSI-2 are useful for an implementation of similar techniques in larger fusion experiments. Furthermore, the obtained results indicate a strong enhancement of erosion with turbulent transport and thus underline the importance of dedicated experiments investigating plasma turbulence in the framework of erosion in future fusion reactors.
