Book excerpt: The power electronic circuits and electric motion systems are among the most representative types of dynamical systems which are ubiquitous in a variety of commercial products in modern industry. Apart from the normal operation, under certain parametric settings, a range of complex dynamic behaviors can be observed in these systems. This dissertation presents the comprehensive investigation of bifurcations and chaos in the electronic/power electronic circuits and motor drive systems including Chua’s circuit, switched mode DC-DC power converters, and the switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive employing digital speed regulator and hysteresis current controller. By conducting the mathematical modelling, stability analysis, simulation and experimental tests including the time-domain and frequency-domain analyses, phase portraits, and bifurcation diagrams, the characteristics and mechanisms of the nonlinear behaviors in these systems have been uncovered. The presented study can provide scholars and engineers with critical insight to the nonlinear dynamics within the electronic/power electronic circuits and electric motion systems, and also serve as a valuable reference for practical design of these systems.

Book excerpt: This NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Geilo between March 29th and April 9th 1981, was the sixth in a series devoted to the subject of phase transitions and instabilities. The present institute was intended to provide a forum for discussion of the importance of nonlinear phenomena associated with instabilities in systems as seemingly disparate as ferroelectrics and rotating buckets of oil. Ten years ago, at the first Geilo school, the report of a central peak in the fluctuation spectrum of SrTi0 close to its 3 106 K structural phase transition demonstrated that the simple soft-mode theory of such transitions was incomplete. The missing ingredient was the essential nonlinearity of the system. Parti cipants at this year's Geilo school heard assessments of a decade of experimental and theoretical effort which has been expended to elucidate the nature of this nonlinearity. The importance of order ed clusters and the walls which bound them was stressed in this con text. A specific type of wall, the soliton, was discussed by a number of speakers. New experimental results which purport to demonstrate the existence of solitons in a one-dimensional ferromagnet were presented. A detailed discussion was given of the role of solitons in transport phenomena in driven multistable systems, typified by a sine-Gordon chain.

Book excerpt: The book comprises a broad panorama of phenomena occurring in four major classes of radiophysical and mechanical systems linear, nonlinear, parametric, and nonlinear-parametric. An analytical technique for the broad circle of issues under consideration is developed. It is presented in a user-friendly form, allowing its further direct application in research practices. Analytical methods are presented for investigating modulation-parametric and nonlinear systems, oscillating systems with periodic and almost periodic time-dependent parameters, effects of adaptive self-organization in coupled resonance systems and oscillating systems under the action of external forces, nonlinear with respect to the coordinates of excited systems. Of an interdisciplinary nature, this volume can serve as a handbook for developing lecture courses such as Fundamentals of Nonlinear Dynamics and Theory of Nonlinear Oscillations, Theory of Nonlinear Circuits and Systems, Fundamentals of Radiophysics and Electronics, Theory of Signals and Theoretical Radiophysics, Theoretical Mechanics and Electrodynamics.

In recent decades there has been significant progress in the theory of nonlinear phenomena, but there are comparatively few devices that actually take this rich behavior into account. The text applies and exploits this knowledge to propose devices which operate more efficiently and cheaply, while affording the promise of much better performance.
