Book excerpt: I describe mid/far-infrared photodetectors based on frequency upconversion in a near-resonant cascade of interband and intersubband transitions in high optical non-linearity asymmetric quantum well structures. Such structures can yield high detectivity and responsivity in the mid/far-infrared range. Resonant uponversion detectors can be designed for both collinear and perpendicular pump and signal beams. They can be integrated with semiconductor pump lasers to yield compact devices. Single photon counting is also achieved by these detectors. I present specific device designs based on GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/AlInAs heterostructures and calculations of their expected figures of merit. This includes a study of the intersubband nonlinear absorption of asymmetric double quantum wells designed for mid/far-IR range. The dependance of second order nonlinear susceptibility on various parameters of the structure is studied. In particular, different values for barrier and well widths are considered. The nonlinear absorption can be obtained by using perturbative calculation of the linear susceptibility up to second order with density matrix approach. The intersubband linear and nonlinear asymmetric double quantum well can be tuned using two design parameters. One is the width of the barrier between the wells that controls the coupling and the second is the width of the narrow well that controls the asymmetry of the structure. As the barrier width narrows the energy gap at the anticrossing increases. The asymmetry of the two well potentials is essential for sum frequency and difference frequency generation since in a symmetric well Z31 = 0 due to the same parity of the ground and second excited states so that x(2) = 0. In our detection scheme using frequency up-conversion we demonstrate that these devices can achieve high detectivity, very low noise and high value for x(2) hence good efficiency. This can be an important advantage for low signal detection and single photon counting.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Intersubband transitions in semiconductor quantum wells have been the subject of extensive research for the past several years and are nowadays used in a variety of devices operating at mid-infrared wavelengths, such as quantum-well infrared photodetectors and quantum cascade lasers. More recently near-infrared intersubband transitions have also been measured in wide-conduction-band-offset heterostructures such as GaN/AlGaN and InGaAs/AlAsSb quantum wells, at wavelengths in the low-loss transmission window of optical fibers. This opens up the possibility of utilizing the unique features of intersubband transitions for information processing applications in fiber-optic communications. In particular, due to their ultrafast relaxation lifetimes and giant optical nonlinearities, intersubband transitions are ideally well suited to nonlinear optical switching at bit rates of several hundred Gb/s. Thus they have the potential to play a key enabling role in future ultra-broadband all-optical networks, in which information is not only transmitted but also processed in the optical domain. This dissertation addresses the design, fabrication and demonstration of all-optical switching devices operating at fiber-optic communication wavelengths, based on intersubband transitions in GaN/AlN quantum-well waveguides. The intersubband absorption properties of GaN/AlN quantum wells have first been investigated via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. At the same time, a self-consistent Poisson and Schrödinger equations solver has been developed to interpret the measurement results, and to design quantum well structures optimized for all-optical switching applications. The design, fabrication and characterization of waveguides based on these quantum wells are also addressed in detail in this dissertation. All-optical switching via cross absorption saturation has then been demonstrated with an optimized waveguide structure. The measured switching times are shorter than one picosecond, which indicates the suitability of these nonlinear devices for all-optical gating at bit rates of several hundred Gb/s. At the same time, relatively low control-pulse switching energies of about 40 pJ have been demonstrated. This important parameter can be further improved using a novel approach based on coupled quantum wells, which we have proposed and theoretically investigated. Finally, the intersubband refractive-index nonlinearities of GaN/AlN quantum wells have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The results indicate that these quantum wells are also promising for all-optical switching via cross-phase modulation, an approach that may prove advantageous in terms of contrast ratio, on-state losses, and regenerative capabilities.

This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) radiation with frequencies between 100 GHz and 30 THz has developed into an important tool of science and technology, with numerous applications in materials characterization, imaging, sensor technologies, and telecommunications. Recent progress in THz generation has provided ultrashort THz pulses with electric field amplitudes of up to several megavolts/cm. This development opens the new research field of nonlinear THz spectroscopy in which strong light-matter interactions are exploited to induce quantum excitations and/or charge transport and follow their nonequilibrium dynamics in time-resolved experiments. This book introduces methods of THz generation and nonlinear THz spectroscopy in a tutorial way, discusses the relevant theoretical concepts, and presents prototypical, experimental, and theoretical results in condensed matter physics. The potential of nonlinear THz spectroscopy is illustrated by recent research, including an overview of the relevant literature.

Download or read book Nonlinear Optics written by S. Miyata and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of nonlinear optics developed gradually with the invention of lasers. After the discovery of second-harmonic generation in quartz, many other interesting nonlinear optical processes were rapidly discovered. Simultaneously theoretical programmes for the understanding of nonlinear optical phenomena were stimulated in accordance to develop structure-property relationships. In the beginning, research advances were made on inorganic ferroelectric materials followed by semiconductors. In the 1970's, the importance of organic materials was realised because of their nonlinear optical responses, fast optical response, high laser damage thresholds, architectural flexibility, and ease of fabrication. At present materials can be classified into three categories - inorganic ferroelectrics, semiconductors, and organic materials. Advances have also been made in quantum chemistry approaches to investigate nonlinear optical susceptibilities and in the development of novel nonlinear optical devices. Generally, inorganic and organic nonlinear optical materials and their related optical processes are reported in separate meetings. This book collects for the first time papers covering the recent developments and areas of present research in the field of nonlinear optical materials.
