Book excerpt: Nonlinear Control of Robots and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: An Integrated Approach presents control and regulation methods that rely upon feedback linearization techniques. Both robot manipulators and UAVs employ operating regimes with large magnitudes of state and control variables, making such an approach vital for their control systems design. Numerous application examples are included to facilitate the art of nonlinear control system design, for both robotic systems and UAVs, in a single unified framework. MATLAB® and Simulink® are integrated to demonstrate the importance of computational methods and systems simulation in this process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to design an effective nonlinear flight control system that only uses elevon to control the flying-wing UAV and to design the guidance law that can track the specified trajectory. The nonlinear dynamic inversion technique is adopted for this control system design. It can effectively control the roll rate and pitch rate of the aircraft and meet the design requirement of the desired dynamics generated to satisfy certain flying qualities. The thesis also developed an infinite-horizon LQR based three-dimensional adaptive optimal guidance law to track the designated flight path. Finally, computer simulations were successfully demonstrated to show that the proposed control law and guidance law can control the flying-wing UAV track the designated trajectory effectively.

Book excerpt: This book introduces a comprehensive and mathematically rigorous controller design for families of nonlinear systems with time-varying parameters and unstructured uncertainties. Although the presented methodology is general, the specific family of systems considered is the latest, NextGen, unconventional fixed-wing unmanned aircraft with circulation control or morphing wings, or a combination of both. The approach considers various sources of model and parameter uncertainty, while the controller design depends not on a nominal plant model, but instead on a family of admissible plants. In contrast to existing controller designs that consider multiple models and multiple controllers, the proposed approach is based on the ‘one controller fits all models’ within the unstructured uncertainty interval. The book presents a modeling-based analysis and synthesis approach with additive uncertainty weighting functions for accurate realization of the candidate systems. This differs significantly from existing designs in that it is capable of handling time-varying characteristics. This research monograph is suitable for scientists, engineers, researchers and graduate students with a background in control system theory who are interested in complex engineering nonlinear systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here a leading researcher provides a comprehensive treatment of the design of automatic control logic for spacecraft and aircraft. In this book Arthur Bryson describes the linear-quadratic-regulator (LQR) method of feedback control synthesis, which coordinates multiple controls, producing graceful maneuvers comparable to those of an expert pilot. The first half of the work is about attitude control of rigid and flexible spacecraft using momentum wheels, spin, fixed thrusters, and gimbaled engines. Guidance for nearly circular orbits is discussed. The second half is about aircraft attitude and flight path control. This section discusses autopilot designs for cruise, climb-descent, coordinated turns, and automatic landing. One chapter deals with controlling helicopters near hover, and another offers an introduction to the stabilization of aeroelastic instabilities. Throughout the book there is a strong emphasis on the mathematical modeling necessary for designing a good feedback control system. The appendixes summarize analysis of linear dynamic systems, synthesis of analog and digital feedback control, simulation, and modeling of flexible vehicles.

Book excerpt: The mechanical simplicity, cost, and versatility of multirotor UAVs have contributed to their widespread use in numerous industries. Their vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability payloads-carrying (e.g. cameras, equipment, etc.) capacity make them an ideal candidate for use in package delivery. Payloads will affect the bare-airframe dynamics of the aircraft and the closed-loop performance of the flight control system, so accurate models are required to design, assess, and evaluate appropriate flight control systems to ensure safety of flight. Accurate flight dynamics models are obtained from system identification of flight test data using frequency sweeps to excite the aircraft at three flight conditions (0, 10, 20 knots). Model stitching techniques are used to combine accurately identified linear models with trim data to create a quasi-linear parameter-varying (qLPV) stitched model capable of continuous simulation throughout the flight envelope. Extrapolation of the stitched model to a heavy loading configuration (with internal payload) was validated using flight test data. This demonstrated the ability of the stitched model to accurately generate off-nominal linear models representing loaded configurations for analysis and flight control design. Three different inner-loop flight control systems, namely, explicit model following, nonlinear dynamic inversion, and incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion, were designed and optimized to a common, comprehensive, set of stability and performance specifications. Outer-loop flight control systems were designed and optimized for the highest performance while meeting all other specifications. Robustness analysis of the flight control systems were conducted while considering both deterministic payload variations and modeling uncertainty. Incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion was shown to be robust in performance (tracking, disturbance rejection, and offset-CG cancellation), but also had instances of stability margins evaluated under uncertainty that did not meet degraded stability margins requirements for the worst-case scenarios. Nonlinear simulations were used to assess the performance and suitability of each flight control system to execute a notional package delivery mission scenario. The full flight envelope simulation stitched model is used in conjunction with the identified measurement noise and turbulence models to realistically simulate the mission. Several case scenarios were evaluated to provide a baseline performance, a measure of degraded performance when a payload is added but the control systems are not reconfigured, and the recovery of performance with the deterministic reconfiguration of the feedback linearization-based flight control systems. Nonlinear simulation results showed that incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion is suitable for package delivery aircraft due to its performance robustness, even without reconfiguration, but requires additional design considerations to account for stability margins degradation due to turbulence, noise, and modeling uncertainty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter deals with the control system development and flight test for an unconventional flight vehicle, namely, a tandem ducted-fan experimental flying platform. The first-principle modeling approach combined with the frequency system identification has been adopted to obtain a high-fidelity dynamics model. It is inherently less stable and difficult to control. To accomplish the required practical flight tasks, the flying vehicle needs to work well even in windy conditions. Moreover, for flight control engineers, simple prescribed multi-loop controller structures are preferred. To handle the multiple problems, a structured velocity controller consisting of two feedback loops is developed, where inner loop provides stability augmentation and decoupling, and the outer loop guarantees desired velocity tracking performance. The simultaneous design of the two-loop controllers under multiple performance requirements in the usual H∞ metrics can be cast as a nonsmooth optimization program. To compensate for changes in plant dynamics across the flight envelope, a smooth and compact polynomial scheduling formula is implemented as a function of the forward flight speed. Both simulations and flight test results have been presented in this work to showcase the potential for the proposed robust nonlinear control system to optimize the performance of UAV, specifically unconventional vehicles.
