Download or read book Seismic Performance Analysis of Concrete Gravity Dams written by Gaohui Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the seismic performance of concrete gravity dams, considering the effects of strong motion duration, mainshock-aftershock seismic sequence, and near-fault ground motion. It employs both the extended finite element method (XFEM) and concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) models to characterize the mechanical behavior of concrete gravity dams under strong ground motions, including the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction. In addition, it discusses the effects of the initial crack, earthquake direction, and cross-stream seismic excitation on the nonlinear dynamic response to strong ground motions, and on the damage-cracking risk of concrete gravity dams. This book provides a theoretical basis for the seismic performance evaluation of high dams, and can also be used as a reference resource for researchers and graduate students engaged in the seismic design of high dams.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents an investigation of the behavior of concrete gravity dams subjected to earthquake motions of sufficient strength to induce cracking. Nonlinear, dynamic, finite element analyses of three dams subjected to the Parkfield earthquake motion are conducted with the ADINA84 code. In the analyses the essential characteristics of static preloading, bidirectional seismic motion, dynamic concrete cracking, and hydrodynamic interaction are modeled. The results show that cracked zones can propagate through the cross sections at various elevations. The US Army Corps of Engineers' guidance for seismic evaluation of gravity dams compares conservatively to these results but incorrectly locates the elevation of cracking through the section in some cases. A procedure to estimate the relative permanent displacement across such cracked sections is developed using the sliding block analysis. Recommendations for further research to improve the guidance for seismic safety evaluation of concrete gravity dams are made. Keywords: Earthquake effects; Finite element analysis.
Book Synopsis Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams by : National Research Council
Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hazard posed by large dams has long been known. Although no concrete dam has failed as a result of earthquake activity, there have been instances of significant damage. Concerns about the seismic safety of concrete dams have been growing recently because the population at risk in locations downstream of major dams continues to expand and because the seismic design concepts in use at the time most existing dams were built were inadequate. In this book, the committee evaluates current knowledge about the earthquake performance of concrete dams, including procedures for investigating the seismic safety of such structures. Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams specifically informs researchers about state-of-the-art earthquake analysis of concrete dams and identifies subject areas where additional knowledge is needed.
Book Synopsis Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams by : Chong Zhang
Download or read book Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams written by Chong Zhang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of a large dam failing can be disastrous. However, predicting the performance of concrete dams during earthquakes is one of the most complex and challenging problems in structural dynamics. Based on a nonlinear approach, Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams allows engineers to build models that account for nonlinear phenomena such as vertical joint slippage, cracks, and cavitation. This yields more accurate estimates. Advanced but readable, this book is the culmination of the work carried out by Tsinghua University Research Group on Earthquake Resistance on Dams over the last two decades. Nonlinearity characteristics of high concrete dams, seismic analysis methods, evaluation models A systematic approach to nonlinear analysis and seismic safety evaluation of concrete dams Includes nonlinear fracture of dam-water-foundation interaction system, dynamic fluid-structure Covers soil-structure interactions, and meso-scale mechanical behavior of concrete are all international front issues of the field

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams by : N. Pal
Download or read book Nonlinear Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams written by N. Pal and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model is proposed for the mechanical properties -- constitutive relation and strength -- of concrete subject to dynamic cyclic reversible stresses and strains that may occur in gravity dams subjected to earthquake ground motion. The model describes properties of concrete under a two-dimensional state of stress. The effects of strain rate -- the time rate of change of strain -- on the mechanical properties are incorporated in the model. Experimental results available in the literature form the basis for the proposed model. A method is developed for nonlinear analysis of response of concrete gravity dams to earthquake ground motion wherein mechanical properties of concrete are defined by the mathematical model mentioned above. Earthquake analyses reveal that cracking of concrete is confined to areas near the upstream and downstream faces of dams -- especially in the upper parts and in some cases also near the heel. The estimated cracking is very sensitive to the assumed tensile strength.
