Book excerpt: The nonlinear equations of motion for a hypersonic vehicle flying on a minor circle were modeled using the control design and simulation software package, MATRIXx. The model includes earth rotation and gravity gradient effects. Aerodynamic forces and moments are expressed as first order Taylor series expansions using the full nonlinear expression for the dynamic pressure. Minor circle equilibrium flight conditions are generated via a Newton iteration technique (Turbo Pascal program) for both a rotating and non-rotating earth model. Equilibrium performance over speeds from Mach 5 to Mach 40 and 0 to 85 degree latitudes at east and west flight headings are compared. The speed and latitude determine equilibrium bank angles, altitude, and roll, pitch, yaw control moments (to sustain minor circle flight). These parameters are analyzed to assess equilibrium performance. Results show that earth rotation and gravity gradient torques have significant effects on performance. The system is shown (via MATRIXx) to be marginally unstable. For near-major circle routes, the modes are poorly damped and decoupled into lateral and longitudinal modes. For mid-latitude minor circle routes, the modes are poorly damped and coupled. However, the modes are comprised of either mostly longitudinal or mostly lateral states. For minor circle latitudes greater than 65 deg, we see poorly damped coupled modes, with new mode shapes appearing as equilibrium speeds increase.

Book excerpt: The report presents a summary of the important results obtained on a combined analytical and experimental program for investigation of the hypersonic dynamic stability of re-entry vehicles. An unsteady flow field solution is described which predicts the static and dynamic stability characteristics for vehicles which are executing small amplitude oscillations about zero angle of attack. Solutions were obtained for sharp and blunted, axisymmetric and two-dimensional shapes in real gas equilibrium flow. The experimental program was conducted in AEDC tunnel 'C' at Mach 10 and in the Ling-Temco-Vought Hot Shot tunnel at Mach 14 and 20 to obtain dynamic stability characteristics of a 10 degree cone. Data are presented to show the effect of bluntness ratio, reduced frequency, center of gravity location, Reynolds number and Mach number. Comparisons are made with various theoretical results and limited correlations are shown which establish significant trends.

Book excerpt: This thesis work is devoted to extending Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (NDI) for a large scale of nonlinear systems while guaranteeing sufficient stability conditions. NDI has been studied in a wide range of applications, including aeronautics and aerospace. It allows to compute nonlinear control laws able to decouple and linearize a model at any operating point of its state envelope. However, this method is inherently non-robust to modelling errors and input saturations. Moreover, obtaining a quantifiable guarantee of the attained stability domain in a nonlinear control context is not a very straightforward task. Unlike standard NDI approaches, our methodology can be viewed as a generalized nonlinear compensation framework which allows to incorporate uncertainties and input saturations in the design process. Paralleling anti-windup strategies, the controller can be computed through a single multichannel optimization problem or through a simple two-step process. Within this framework, linear fractional transformations of the nonlinear closed-loop can be easily derived for robust stability analysis using standard tools for linear systems. The proposed method is tested for the flight control of a delta wing type reentry vehicle at hypersonic, transonic and subsonic phases of the atmospheric reentry. For this thesis work, a Flight Mechanics simulator including diverse external factors and modelling errors was developed in Simulink.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted at M = 10 and at M = 14 and 20 to obtain experimental data on the hypersonic dynamic stability characteristics of a 10-degree half-angle cone. These data were generated to support dynamic stability studies and to evaluate the effects of many geometric and environmental variables, which influence the oscillatory motion of re-entry vehicles. The state-of-the-art of experimental ground testing in hypersonic dynamic stability is reviewed in detail with respect to simulation and data measuring capabilities. Data correlations were obtained to compare facilities and to evaluate the degree of consistency of results using different techniques in measuring and reducing the data. The confidence level for the data is established by means of these correlations, and conclusive interpretations of the data for application in flight estimates can only be made when the significance of these correlations are fully realized. The data correlations do bring out definite inconsistencies in test results and demonstrate the more obvious shortcomings of ground test simulation in this type of experiment research. Test results indicate that the 10-degree cone configuration is dynamically stable over the entire scope of matrix variables covered in the experimental program. Dynamic instabilities observed in flight remain unconfirmed by these ground test results.

Book excerpt: A frame work has been setup for the simulation of hypersonic reentry vehicles using commercial codes FLUENT and LS-DYNA. The main goal of this work was to set up a simple approach for the heat flux prediction and evaluation of the material thermal response during the reentry of the vehicle. Fluid thermal coupling for predicting the thermal response of a reusable non-ablating thermal protection system was set up. The computational fluid dynamics code (FLUENT) and the material thermal response codes (LS- DYNA) are loosely coupled to achieve the solution. The vehicle considered in the calculation is an axisymmetric vehicle flying at zero degree angle of attack. The frame work set up was validated with the results available in the literature. Good correlation was observed between the results from the commercial codes and the results from the literature. The mesh movement capability in LS-DYNA was implemented enabling future modeling of ablating thermal protection system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicles moving at hypersonic speeds have great importance to the National Security. Ballistic missile re-entry vehicles (RV's) travel at hypersonic speeds, as do missile defense intercept vehicles. Despite the importance of the problem, no computational analysis method is available to predict the aerodynamic environment of maneuvering hypersonic vehicles, and no analysis is available to predict the transient effects of their shape changes. The present state-of-the-art for hypersonic flow calculations typically still considers steady flow about fixed shapes. Additionally, with present computational methods, it is not possible to compute the entire transient structural and thermal loads for a re-entry vehicle. The objective of this research is to provide the required theoretical development and a computational analysis tool for calculating the hypersonic flow about maneuvering, deforming RV's. This key enabling technology will allow the development of a complete multi-mechanics simulation of the entire RV flight sequence, including important transient effects such as complex flight dynamics. This will allow the computation of the as-delivered state of the payload in both normal and unusual operational environments. This new analysis capability could also provide the ability to predict the nonlinear, transient behavior of endo-atmospheric missile interceptor vehicles to the input of advanced control systems. Due to the computational intensity of fluid dynamics for hypersonics, the usual approach for calculating the flow about a vehicle that is changing shape is to complete a series of steady calculations, each with a fixed shape. However, this quasi-steady approach is not adequate to resolve the frequencies characteristic of a vehicle's structural dynamics. Our approach is to include the effects of the unsteady body shape changes in the finite-volume method by allowing for arbitrary translation and deformation of the control volumes. Furthermore, because the Eulerian computational mesh for the fluid domain must be attached to the vehicle as it undergoes potentially high accelerations, that mesh must be viewed in a non-inertial coordinate frame. The usual conservation-law form of the fluid dynamic governing equations must be augmented. This approach thus requires the derivation of a significantly new numerical formulation, especially to incorporate a modern flux-splitting methodology as needed for numerical stability and accuracy.
