Book excerpt: College students increasingly are transferring among institutions of higher education in pursuit of their educational goals. The existing research on transfer students, however, does not adequately explore the unique characteristics of this heterogeneous population. The literature on transfer students suggests that transfer students are at-risk for experiencing academic difficulty and attrition. Research indicates that degree attainment is associated with the success of the student and their parents. Furthermore, attrition negatively impacts higher education finances, so colleges and universities that focus on helping students be successful and persist to graduation maintain revenue streams. Many studies have focused on cognitive measures of academic performance and persistence; however, research has shown that cognitive measures alone are not the best predictors of academic performance and persistence (Duggan & Pickering, 2008; Pickering, Calliotte, & McAuliffe, 1992). Researchers have explored various noncognitive and cognitive measures of academic performance and persistence, but the literature has not controlled for the unique characteristics of the transfer student population. Research needs to focus on examining transfer students as subpopulations with common characteristics. The purpose of this research was to analyze noncognitive, cognitive, and demographic variables to determine if incorporating the transfer history of students would result in better predictions of academic performance and persistence. The population examined in this study included first-time transfer students who most resemble the traditional college student characteristics which excluded distance learners, international students, military students, and students over the age of 29. Transfer students were divided into six subpopulations: first-year vertical transfers (n = 143), sophomore vertical transfers (n = 469), upper-division vertical transfer ( n = 554), first-year horizontal transfers (n = 166), sophomore horizontal transfers (n = 306), and upper-division horizontal transfers (n = 77). Logistical regressions were used to answer four research questions. Results of the analysis revealed that a noncognitive index (TSS Index) based on student attitudes, behaviors, and experiences, was a significant predictor of academic difficulty for each of the subpopulations of transfer students. First semester cumulative GPA at the target institution was predictive of attrition for each subpopulation of transfer students. The findings also revealed that the other predictors vary in significance among the subpopulations which supports the need for additional research on the uniqueness of transfer students. Findings from this study justify the need for additional research on transfer students that further examine the characteristics of unique subpopulations of these students. College administrators in areas of student services and enrollment management can use the results to gain a better understanding of the transfer student population and identify and develop resources to assist these students with their academic endeavors.

Book excerpt: Student mobility is a complex phenomenon that has been defined in various ways in research: transfer, swirling, double-dipping, and zig-zag (Adelman, 2006; McCormick, 2003; Townley, Katz, Wandersman, Skiles, Schillaci, Timmerman & Mousseau, 2013). Of the various transfer patterns, research studies have most robustly focused on student outcomes of transfers from community colleges to four-year institutions-- known as traditional, vertical, or upward transfer (Dougherty & Kienzl, 2006; Doyle, 2009; Eaga & Jaeger, 2009; Gandara, Alvarada, Driscoll & Orfield, 2012; Ishitani & McKitrick, 2010). However, other transfer patterns such as lateral transfer (transfer from one four-year institution to another or from one two-year institution to another) have also been documented in recent years (Goldrick-Rab & Pfeffer, 2009; U.S. Department of Education, 2001) and warrant further investigation. This study aimed to examine the impact of a set of empirically-driven predictor variables and other academic engagement experiences on the first-year grade point average, persistence, and degree attainment of African American, Latino/a, and Asian American vertical and lateral transfer students at a four-year minority serving institution by analyzing institutional student-level longitudinal data collected by the study university's Office of Institutional Research from Fall 2007 through Fall 2012 (n=1340). The overall linear model for the total minority cohort (n=1340) revealed that a positive predictive relationship existed between initial hours earned at time of transfer, initial GPA, ethnicity (i.e. African American), major (i.e. STEM), full-time enrollment in Spring 2008 and the outcome, first year post-transfer cumulative GPA F(12, 1004) = 30.29, p.

Book excerpt: It is the norm for institutions to report on their retention and graduation rates only for first-year student cohorts. Colleges and universities that report their first-year retention rates in the 90% range often do not account for their newly admitted transfer students. Much of the nuance in reporting retention comes from unaccounted transfer student registrations and enrollments. Reporting transfer retention is also much harder, since many transfer students do not have predictable patterns of enrollment. This study examined factors that contribute to graduation, dropout and persistence and how they differ by race, socioeconomic class, and gender. Based on a new student questionnaire conducted in 2015, 2016, 2017 by a large research institution in the Mid Atlantic, an exploratory statistical technique CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) designed for a categorical dependent variable, was employed to establish the characteristics of transfer students who had a high probability to drop out after transferring to their new institution. Examining the dendrogram, one can easily classify the various "at-risk" student groups by tracing each of the terminal groups to the root of the tree. The results of this study provide context and information for developing transfer-friendly programming and interventions at both community colleges and four-year institutions. The results will be valuable to senior-level staff, front line student support staff, faculty, and community organizations focused on helping students who seek re-enrollment after an extended academic leave period. Additionally, this study will demonstrate how modeling techniques can be used to develop predictive models for different populations, across different colleges.

Book excerpt: Abstract: There have been voluminous studies upon the potential predictive power of students' non-cognitive attributes such as self-confidence, motivation and student's interaction with institutions on their collegiate performance. While much effort have been put towards identifying the utilities of these attributes, little endeavors have been made to design a concise yet precise composite measure of all the collegiate performance-related non-cognitive attributes. Such measure could be beneficial not just to the future research studies about non-cognitive correlates of students' academic performance in college; it could also be more than informative to the admission officials in higher institutions. The initial intent of this study was to develop an instrument to measure relevant non-cognitive drivers of students' academic performance in college. A Meta analysis was conducted to guide the selection of non-cognitive constructs to include in the proposed instrument. Academic self-efficacy and achievement motivation were the two constructs that were shown to be significantly correlated with students' academic performance in college across research studies. Considering the momentum that student engagement is acquiring in evaluating the quality of higher institutions and predicting students' success in college, the author also included student engagement as one of the constructs to measure. Items were created for each of the aforementioned constructs by reviewing, selecting and revising the existing measures. Face and content validity were established through expert reviews. A forty item initial survey were sent out electronically in two mid-west higher institutions. 497 responses from two Ohio higher institutions were collected. Reliability of the proposed instrument was initially established based on Cronbach's alpha. Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory as well as Exploratory Factor Analysis were conducted in the refinement of the instrument. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was utilized to validate the construct validity of the final survey, which was consist of the 20 selected items from the initial survey. A structural equation exploration was conducted after establishing the reliability and validity of the proposed survey with the intent of studying the added values of non-cognitive attributes on students' cumulative GPA in college after controlling for the influence of their prior success, which was measured by their high school GPA and SAT scores. Two hypothesized models were tested and compared. Results indicated that students' non-cognitive constructs (i.e. Academic self-efficacy, achievement motivation and student engagement) have significant influence on students' cumulative GPA in college while not taking into account their prior academic success. However, when students' prior academic success was included as covariate in the model, most of the aforementioned non-cognitive attributes were no longer significant predictors of their academic performance in college, which in other words could be interpreted that the aforementioned students' non-cognitive constructs are, to some degree, proxies of their prior academic success, which ultimately influence their performance in college.
