Book excerpt: We study the universality of the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions at small-x, by comparing the initial/final state interaction effects in dijet-correlation in pA collisions with that in deep inelastic lepton nucleus scattering. We demonstrate the non-universality by an explicit calculation in a particular model where the multiple gauge boson exchange contributions are summed up to all orders. We furthercomment on the implications of our results on the theoretical interpretation of di-hadron correlation in dA collisions in terms of the saturation phenomena in deep inelastic lepton nucleus scattering.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a systematic pedagogical exposition of the quantitative analysis of Wilson lines and gauge-invariant correlation functions in quantum chromodynamics. Using techniques from the previous volume (Wilson Lines in Quantum Field Theory, 2014), an ab initio methodology is developed and practical tools for its implementation are presented. Emphasis is put on the implications of gauge invariance and path-dependence properties of transverse-momentum dependent parton density functions. The latter are associated with the QCD factorization approach to semi-inclusive hadronic processes, studied at currently operating and planned experimental facilities. Contents: Introduction Particle Number Operators in Quantum Mechanics and in Quantum Field Theory Geometry of Quantum Field Theories Basics of Wilson Lines in QCD Gauge-Invariant Parton Densities Simplifying Wilson Line Calculations Brief Literature Guide Conventions and Reference Formulae Integrations Bibliography Index

Book excerpt: Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distribution functions were introduced to describe both longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of partons inside a nucleon. Great progress has been made in recent years in understanding these distributions measuring different spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive processes. Here we present an overview of the ongoing studies at CLAS and programs planned for the 6 and 12 GeV activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the framework of a spectator diquark model of the nucleon, involving both scalar and axial-vector diquarks, we calculate all the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). Naive Time-odd densities are generated through a one-gluon-loop rescattering mechanism, simulating the final state interactions required for these functions to exist. Analytic results are obtained for all the TMDs, and a connection with the light-cone wave functions formalism is also established. The model parameters are fixed by reproducing the phenomenological parametrizations of unpolarized and helicity parton distributions at the lowest available scale. Predictions for the other parton densities are given and, whenever possible, compared with available parametrizations.

Book excerpt: This book has been designed to honor Lev Nikolaevich Lipatov, as a person and as one of the leading scientists in theoretical high energy physics. The book begins with three articles on Lev as a person, written endearingly by family members, a very close friend and Physics professor, Eugene Levin, and another outstanding scientist, Alfred Mueller. The book further collects 18 articles by several scientists who closely knew and/or collaborated with Lev.With an overarching range over various subfields, the book summarizes parts of Lev's achievements, presents new results which are based upon Lev's work, and paints an outlook on possible future developments. Lev's theoretical work has had an influential impact on phenomenology and experimental high energy physics; befittingly, this collection also includes several articles on these experimental aspects.

Book excerpt: Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMDs) reveal the intrinsic motion of quarks inside the nucleon. They are essential ingredients needed to understand angular asymmetries studied in SIDIS experiments, including current and planned experiments at JLab. Within a class B proposal, we ask for time on the Jefferson Lab computer cluster to extract amplitudes for TMDs from existing lattice QCD gauge configurations and propagators calculated by the USQCD/MILC/LHP collaborations [Aubin 2004, Bratt 2010]. The proposal encompasses more comprehensive studies with a simplified operator [Haegler 2010] along with more realistic and more demanding calculations that promise to give access to time reversal odd TMDs such as the Sivers function. We ask for cluster computer time equivalent to 1.26 million J/Psi core hours, plus disk and tape storage worth 159000 J/Psi core hours.

Book excerpt: This thesis offers an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the physics of the quark–gluon plasma. It clearly explains the connection between theory and experiment, making the topic accessible to non-specialists in this field. The experimental work, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the quark–gluon plasma, is described in great detail. The results described in the final chapters of the thesis provide interesting new ideas about the connection between proton-proton and Pb-Pb collisions. Simone Schuchmann received the 'ALICE Thesis Award 2016' for this excellent work.

Book excerpt: This book contains proceedings of the 7-week INT program dedicated to the physics of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the United States. The 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan recommended EIC as the 'highest priority for new facility construction following the completion of FRIB'. The primary goal of the EIC is to establish precise multi-dimensional imaging of quarks and gluons inside nucleons and nuclei. This includes (i) understanding the spatial and momentum space structure of the nucleon through the studies of TMDs (transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions), GPD (generalized parton distributions) and the Wigner distribution; (ii) determining the partonic origin of the nucleon spin; (iii) exploring the new quantum chromodynamics (QCD) frontier of ultra-strong gluon fields, with the potential to seal the discovery of a new form of dense gluon matter predicted to exist in all nuclei and nucleons at small Bjorken x — the parton saturation. The program brought together both theorists and experimentalists from Jefferson Lab (JLab), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) along with the national and international nuclear physics communities to assess and advance the EIC physics.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first measurements of jets in relativistic heavy ion collisions as reported by the ATLAS Collaboration. These include the first direct observation of jet quenching through the observation of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry. Also, a series of jet suppression measurements are presented, which provide quantitative constraints on theoretical models of jet quenching. These results follow a detailed introduction to heavy ion physics with emphasis on the phenomenon of jet quenching and a comprehensive description of the ATLAS detector and its capabilities with regard to performing these measurements.
