Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to disseminate contemporary knowledge and practical experiences concerning problems and solutions related to urban hydrology and drainage. Although the main focus is on developing countries, the book draws from experiences in many other parts of the world. Based upon numerous practical examples and case studies, the book provides information to assist in the management, planning and engineering design processes. Urban Stormwater Management in Developing Countries covers a wide range of methods and approaches to improve the understanding and ability of local stakeholders to solve stormwater problems within the framework of integrated urban water management. As well as structural interventions, the book describes various non-structural approaches for flood mitigation and pollution control. This book encourages the reader to adopt an integrated approach towards stormwater management and considers the importance of institutional arrangements, participation of local stakeholders in planning, as well as aspects of financing and cost recovery. This comprehensive and topical book: Addresses the broad range of issues related to urban stormwater management with a specific focus on developing countries. Covers the main aspects of planning, design, operation and maintenance of urban drainage systems as well as socio-economic and institutional issues related to urban stormwater management. Presents structural and non-structural approaches for flood mitigation and pollution control within an integrated water resource management framework. Provides extensive examples and case studies of "best practice". Contents Urbanisation and urban hydrology Impacts of flooding on society Integrated framework for stormwater management Institutional structures and policies Planning for urban stormwater management Approaches to urban drainage system design Ecological approaches to urban drainage system design Applications of computer models Operational performance and maintenance Flood mitigation and response strategies Participation and partnerships Economics and financing Full Contents List (27KB)
Book Synopsis Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities by : Shaw L. Yu
Download or read book Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities written by Shaw L. Yu and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1993 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.

Book Synopsis Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls by : J. Marsalek
Download or read book Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding past achievements, flood damage continues to rise throughout the world as the magnitudes of floods increase, partly as a result of poor land management and partly by climate change, growing populations and continuing development in flood-prone areas, and the aging and deterioration of flood defences. One of the major goals of water management is the protection of society from floods. That issue is addressed here in terms of such broad issues as flood analysis, flood impact, non-structural and structural flood management measures. Non-structural measures focus on flood plain management, flood insurance, flood forecasting and warning, and emergency measures during floods. Structural measures focus on catchment management, embankments and flood reservoirs. Post-flood measures are also discussed. Future planning of flood management should be based on a clear understanding of the effectiveness interventions and their impacts on river catchment ecosystems.
Book Synopsis Role of Rainfall and Catchment Characteristics on Urban Stormwater Quality by : An Liu
Download or read book Role of Rainfall and Catchment Characteristics on Urban Stormwater Quality written by An Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key highlights of the book include an innovative rainfall classification methodology based on stormwater quality to support the planning and design of stormwater treatment systems. Additionally, this book provides a practical approach to effective stormwater treatment design and development of a methodology for rainfall selection to optimize stormwater treatment based on both its quality and quantity. The case study presented in this book evaluates how pollutant buildup on urban surfaces and stormwater runoff quality varies with a range of catchment characteristics based on different rainfall types. The information presented will be of particular interest to practitioners such as stormwater-treatment designers, urban planners and hydrologic and stormwater-quality model developers since the outcomes presented provide practical approaches to and recommendations for urban stormwater-quality improvement. Readers will benefit from a state-of-the-art critical review of literature on urban stormwater quality, an in-depth discussion on stormwater-quality processes providing guidance for engineering practice such as stormwater treatment design and model development, a comprehensive overview on the application of multivariate data analysis techniques and a paradigm of the integrated use of commercial models and mathematical equations to undertake a comprehensive, urban stormwater-quality investigation.
