Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Non Sequitur For a novelist the difl'iculty is fearful. Even in such a masterpiece as Redgauntlet Scott feels the difficulty of going on. How tame and flat, after the glorious adventure of Brokenbum, is Darsie's long ride disguised as a woman! Of maidens disguised as men the world is never weary. Shakespeare alone disguised them seven times over, and who could find it in his heart to say that Shakespeare uses disguise too often? It bored Mary Lamb when she was writing the Tales; she began to think that Shakespeare wanted imagination - or so her brother said; but this Opinion is not generally entertained. For men disguised as maidens, they are cumbersome. In stead of gracing an attire less beautiful than should be theirs by right, they dishonour gar ments to the grace of which they were never born. Their petticoats are too tempestuous; their dis order is not nice. Except with Achilles among the Maidens or with the Prince in The Princess, we come too near burlesque instead of comedy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Tham brings together twenty-one short stories from three classic collections, each reflecting her prowess as a storyteller whose deft hands moulds stories to articulate her signature themes of rebellion and non-conformity. Lauded for her technical innovation of style and form in prose, these stories play with the presentation of time and space in the progression of narratives, creating multi-layered possibilities to keep readers entranced till the very last page. Fascist Rock: Stories of Rebellion (published 1990) The angry rebels who walk though these stories tease us with the most provocative of questions. Disturbingly familiar—bitterly and eloquently, they voice our own hidden rebellion. Saving the Rainforest and Other Stories (published 1993) “I believe in the sanctity of the ordinariness of everyday life: beyond its charmed boundaries lies confusion.” So speaks the voice of conservatism and conformity. But shouldn’t one fly, push oneself to the limit and beyond, break all rules? These stories explore the tensions that arise when the desire for personal fulfillment clashes with societies’ norms. The Gunpowder Trail and Other Stories (published 2003) In this collection of stories, characters step away from the status quo, blazing a trail of quiet self-destruction

No, it isn't," he added, withdrawing his hand. "Now, isn't that queer?" He took the hat from the girl's hand, and, holding it rather vaguely at his side, regarded her steadily. With an equally steady gaze she inspected him. What he saw was a girl in the early twenties, dark and tall, and wearing too few clothes. This was not due to fashion, but to poverty. Incidentally, she was beautiful, but he was the sort of man who would not realize that until it was pointed out to him. She would have been more beautiful still after a good dinner. What she saw was a man between thirty and forty, who was not in the least handsome. On the other hand, his eyes atoned for everything. They were gray and a little vague, but kindness and honesty looked out of them boldly and unashamed. And this was odd, because he had had an expensive education, and might have been expected to have the usual finesse of the Society man. Book excerpt: In Classical Individualism, Tibor R. Machan argues that individualism is far from being dead. Machan identifies, develops and defends what he calls classical individualism - an individualism humanised by classical philosophy, rooted in Aristotle rather than Hobbes. This book does not reject the social nature of human beings, but finds that every one has a self-directed agent who is responsible for what he or she does. Machan rejects all types of collectivism, including communitarianism, ethnic solidarity, racial unity, and gender identity. The ideas expressed here have important social and political implications, and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the notion of individuality and individual responsibility.

Book excerpt: Recent writing on the nature of freedom has served to underline a crucial gap in the academic experience. First--and most obviously--the concept of freedom has been modernized by its application to contemporary institutions. Second, a new approach to the concept of liberty has been pioneered in the construction of new typologies of freedom. Finally, awareness of variety in concepts of freedom has been paralleled in variations in the practice of freedom. The tumultuous history of Western man may be conceptualized as the story of how freedom has become embodied. What is missing from the story is the relationship of concepts to actions. This relationship has been established for some specific notions of freedom. Many of the philosophical analyses--especially recent ones like pragmatism and existentialism--have been predicated on actual human behavior. On the other hand, many classic histories of freedom--those of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, John Bagnell Bury, Guido de Ruggiero, and Harold Laski--have traced the actual development of a definite kind of freedom. This volume contains essays prepared to celebrate the anniversary of the publication of John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, revised in the light of discussions by Henry D. Aiken, William Ebenstein, Mark DeWolfe Howe, and David Spitz, as well as other articles, many of them growing out of the discussion either in the form of commentary or independent contributions. There are also two papers written independently (Andrew Hacker and Leonard Krieger). Carl J. Friedrich was Eaton Professor of the Science of Government, Harvard University. During World War II he helped found the School of Overseas Administration at Harvard to train officers for work in military government abroad. He was professor of political science at the University of Heidelberg from 1956 to 1966, where he founded and helped to develop the Institut fr Politische Wissenschaft. He served as president of the American Political Science Association in 1962, the International Political Science Association from 1967-1970, and the Institut international de philosophie politique.
