Book excerpt: Nonlinear wave propagation in gas flows, MHD, combustions, elasticity, multiphase flows etc. is studied. Shock waves which are either more or less compressive than the classical gas shocks are shown to be nonlinearly stable, but in the sense distinct from each other. This resolves the longstanding paradox on their physical admissibility by pointing out the sensitive role of dissipations. The phenomenon of non-equilibrium is systematically studied. The problem of zero relaxation limit is resolved for models in mechanics and phase transition. Nonlinear wave propagation, Mechanics, Gas dynamics.

Book excerpt: The author has studied the qualitative behaviour of nonlinear waves for hyperbolic conservation laws with or without the effects of dissipations, discretization, or nonlinear resonance. The fundamental problem of well-posedness theory for hyperbolic conservation laws is being resolved. It is shown that no physical law, beyond the second law of thermodynamics, is needed. The shock waves for finite difference schemes are shown to have slow decaying tails due to the effect of small divisor. Physical degenerate dissipation matrix is shown to give rise to rich nonlinear wave phenomena. Nonlinear waves for non-strictly hyperbolic system are shown to behave sensitively as a functional of the dissipation matrix. The ideas of wave tracing and pointwise estimates introduced by the author play the central role in the analysis of these problems.

Book excerpt: Travelling wave processes and wave motion are of great importance in many areas of mechanics, and nonlinearity also plays a decisive role there. The basic mathematical models in this area involve nonlinear partial differential equations, and predictability of behaviour of wave phenomena is of great importance. Beside fluid dynamics and gas dynamics, which have long been the traditional nonlinear scienes, solid mechanics is now taking an ever increasing account of nonlinear effects. Apart from plasticity and fracture mechanics, nonlinear elastic waves have been shown to be of great importance in many areas, such as the study of impact, nondestructive testing and seismology. These lectures offer a thorough account of the fundamental theory of nonlinear deformation waves, and in the process offer an up to date account of the current state of research in the theory and practice of nonlinear waves in solids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of materials which exhibit new and unconventional properties is of central importance for the devel- opment of advanced and refined technologies in many fields of engineering science. In this connection there has been a rapidly growing interest in real fluid effects on wave phenomena in the past few years. A prominent example is provided by Bethe-Zel'dovich-Thompson (BZT) fluids which have the distinguishing feature that they exhibit negative nonlinearity over a finite range of temperature and pressures in the pure vapour phase. However, two phase flows with and without phase change are an even richer source of new unexpected and previously thought impossible phenomena. Topics covered by this volume include waves in gases near the critical point, waves in retrograde fluids, temperature waves in superfluid helium and density waves in suspensions of particles in liquids. Clearly, the aim of the various contributions is twofold. First, they are intended to provide scientists and engineers working in these and related areas with an overview of various new physical phenomena as for example expansion shocks, sonic shocks, shock splitting, evaporation and liquafaction shocks and the experimental techniques needed to study these phenomena. Second, an attempt is made to discuss aspects of their mathematical modeling with special emphasis on properties which these phenomena have in common.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to problems of propagation and stability of linear and nonlinear waves in continuous media with complex structure. It considers the different media, such as solid with cavities, preliminary deformed disperse medium, solid with porosity filled by the electrically conductive and non-conductive liquid, magnetoelastic, piezo-semiconductors, crystals with dislocations, composites with inclusions, an electrically conductive asymmetrical liquid, a mixture of gas with a drop liquid. The book also considers the propagation of a laser beam through a two-level medium. The presented results are based on methods of evolution and modulation equations that were developed by the authors. The book is intended for scientific and technical researchers, students and post-graduate students specializing in mechanics of continuous media, physical acoustics, and physics of the solid state.

Book excerpt: This unique book aims to treat a class of nonlinear waves that are reflected from the boundaries of media of finite extent. It involves both standing (unforced) waves and resonant oscillations due to external periodic forcing. The waves are both hyperbolic and dispersive. To achieve this aim, the book develops the necessary understanding of linear waves and the mathematical techniques of nonlinear waves before dealing with nonlinear waves in bounded media. The examples used come mainly from gas dynamics, water waves and viscoelastic waves.

It covers the behavior of waves in two parts, with the first part addressing hyperbolic waves and the second addressing dispersive waves. The mathematical principles are presented along with examples of specific cases in communications and specific physical fields, including flood waves in rivers, waves in glaciers, traffic flow, sonic booms, blast waves, and ocean waves from storms.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers on dynamical and statistical theory of nonlinear wave propagation in dispersive conservative media. Emphasis is on waves on the surface of an ideal fluid and on Rossby waves in the atmosphere. Although the book deals mainly with weakly nonlinear waves, it is more than simply a description of standard perturbation techniques. The goal is to show that the theory of weakly interacting waves is naturally related to such areas of mathematics as Diophantine equations, differential geometry of waves, Poincare normal forms and the inverse scattering method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes in detail the applicability of the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method to various engineering problems. It is a continuation of the book “Nonlinear Dynamical Systems in Engineering: Some Approximate Approaches”, published at Springer in 2011 and it contains a great amount of practical models from various fields of engineering such as classical and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, nonlinear oscillations, electrical machines and so on. The main structure of the book consists of 5 chapters. The first chapter is introductory while the second chapter is devoted to a short history of the development of homotopy methods, including the basic ideas of the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method. The last three chapters, from Chapter 3 to Chapter 5, are introducing three distinct alternatives of the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method with illustrative applications to nonlinear dynamical systems. The third chapter deals with the first alternative of our approach with two iterations. Five applications are presented from fluid mechanics and nonlinear oscillations. The Chapter 4 presents the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method with a single iteration and solving the linear equation on the first approximation. Here are treated 32 models from different fields of engineering such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, nonlinear damped and undamped oscillations, electrical machines and even from physics and biology. The last chapter is devoted to the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method with a single iteration but without solving the equation in the first approximation.
