Contrairement aux techniques ultrasonores conventionnelles, elle est basée principalement sur l’analyse du temps de vol des signaux de diffraction. Ce phénomène de diffraction intervient lorsqu’un faisceau ultrasonore rencontre un obstacle dont chacun des points réémet alors des ondes omnidirectionnelles. Cette technique utilise des critères d’acceptation différents de ceux utilisés en ultrasons conventionnels. Après s’être principalement développée dans les pays anglo-saxons, la technique TOFD voit aujourd’hui son utilisation s’intensifier, notamment grâce à la mise en place très récente d’une normalisation européenne. Dans ces conditions, la COFREND a souhaité mettre à la disposition des industriels un Guide, outil d’information, pouvant les aider à mieux appréhender les conditions d’utilisation et de mise en œuvre de cette technique. La technique TOFD peut être utilisée en tant que technique de contrôle qualité ou expertise aussi bien au stade de la fabrication qu'au stade de l’exploitation (inspection en service, suivi et maintenance). En fabrication la technique TOFD est essentiellement mise en œuvre pour le contrôle des soudures conformément à une méthodologie de détection et de classification des indications définie dans un code de construction ou une norme. En stade exploitation, la technique TOFD est mise en œuvre dans un domaine beaucoup plus large couvrant également la recherche de corrosion. Les défauts recherchés sont du type : - ponctuel ou non dans le volume, - débouchant ou non en surface de sondage ou en paroi opposée, - avec hauteur mesurable ou non. L'analyse opérée sur les indications conduit à effectuer ou non une réparation en fonction de niveaux d’acceptation fixés par le code de construction, la norme ad-hoc, ou des spécifications contractuelles. Elle est confiée à des opérateurs formés spécifiquement à cette technique TOFD qui doivent en connaitre les conditions de mise en œuvre, les performances et les limites.
