Book excerpt: The development of NDT (non-destructive testing) techniques used for the inspection of concrete structures is currently in high demand, because many existing structures have become aged and deteriorated in service. In order to formulate predictions on their stability and to estimate their safety, it is necessary to identify damage signals and to determine their causes. In this regard, the development and establishment of innovative and highly advanced non-destructive methods are required. Acoustic Emission (AE) and related NDE (non-destructive evaluation) techniques have been extensively used to determine crack detection and damage evaluation in concrete. With the move towards a more sustainable society, and the need to extend the long-term service life of infrastructure and aging and disastrous damage due to recent earthquakes, Acoustic Emission (AE) and Related Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) Techniques in the Fracture Mechanics of Concrete: Fundamentals and Applications is a critical reference source for civil engineers, contractors working in construction and materials scientists working both in industry and academia. Presents innovative Acoustic Emission (AE) and related non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, used for damage detection and inspection of aged and deteriorated concrete structures Contributions from recognized world-leaders in the application of acoustic emission (AE) and NDE techniques used for the damage assessment of concrete and concrete structures With the move towards a more sustainable society, and the need to extend the long-term service life of infrastructure and damage due to recent earthquakes, this book is of critical importance An essential knowledge resource for civil engineers, contractors working in construction and materials scientists working both in industry and academia

This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.

Book excerpt: In France, a great number of historical patrimony, consists of stone masonry building, the conservation of this patrimony is a cultural and economic issue. However, the destructive tests are limited in some types of buildings, particularly at a strong architectural heritage value. The need expressed by client and the diagnostic company concerns the lack of a reliable methodology for structural assessment at material and structural scale. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an approach which can combine the CND with the mechanical calculation. This thesis tries to answer three questions: (i) how to improve the reliability of material characterization by non-destructive tests at the structures; (ii) how to improve defect detection, localization and evaluation in material; (iii) how to improve the modeling of mechanical behavior based on CND auscultation. The first objective of this thesis is to improve the reliability of assessment of material characteristics in stone masonry structure by non-destructive techniques (mechanical properties of stones and joints). The proposed methodology will take into account the uncertainties related to: (i) the measurement procedure by CND device; (ii) the material variability constituting the masonry (stones and mortar joints); (iii) the water content which represents a significant bias in the measurement of CND. The main objective of this step is to establish, based on the constitutive material of structure, possible relations between the measurable magnitude by CND and the physical and mechanical properties. The combination of these data will enable to implement an inverse tool, using the CND measurements to deduce the properties of constitutive material of structure. Some methods, as ultrasound, electricity and electromagnetics, which require further understanding, are envisaged to be used in this stage. The second part of this thesis aims to assess the potential of the CND acoustic and electromagnetic methods for the detection of defects, particularly at the level of mortar joints. An active and passive CND instrumentation will be implemented during the characterization test of mortar joints and a validation test will be also proposed at structural scale (masonry wall). In order to realize this objective, an experimental campaign of characterization and validation which will be carried out within the CIFRE thesis of Vincent VENZAL, in collaboration with AIA Ingénierie (thesis started in September 2016). These masonry walls (stones of Frontenac assembled by the lime mortar joints), constructed at demi scale, will be subjected to a vertical loading and tested in shear until the ruin. Once the nondestructive method of mechanical characterization of limestones is validated, a mapping of mechanical properties in structure cans be obtained by non-destructives measurements. This enable to identify the variability of mechanical characterization for the different studied zones and also within these zones. Firstly, this variability could probably be used to identify the partial safety coefficient of masonry in situ by verification in Eurocode 6. Secondly, a study of sensibility of variability of these mechanical properties would be realized by finite element method (damage law). These numerical mechanical tests with random draw of mechanical characteristic in relation with the variability obtained in site lead to (i) identify the real homogenized stress of elements in masonry at the structural scale and (ii) study the scale effect on the highly heterogonous structure.

Book excerpt: This book was proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering. For this reason, the articles highlighted in this editorial relate to different aspects of nondestructive testing of different materials in civil engineering—from building materials to building structures. The current trend in the development of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering is mainly concerned with the detection of flaws and defects in concrete elements and structures, and acoustic methods predominate in this field. As in medicine, the trend is towards designing test equipment that allows one to obtain a picture of the inside of the tested element and materials. From this point of view, interesting results with significance for building practices have been obtained

Book excerpt: Non-destructive testing (NDT) is based on inspection methodologies that do not require the change or destruction of the component or system under evaluation. Numerous NDT techniques are increasingly used, thanks to the recent advances in sensing technologies, data acquisition, data storage and signal processing. Inspection information is widely employed in order to make effective maintenance decisions based on the defects identified, their location and severity. This book presents the main advances recently made on different NDT techniques, together with the principal approaches employed to process the signals obtained during inspection.

Book excerpt: Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of masonry has been, to date, essentially an adaptation of available methods which have been used for evaluation of concrete. There has been an increasing amount of study and application of these methods in recent years. Limitations on the efficiency and utility of these methods has been observed. Improved methods of NDE of masonry are needed. Recent NDE developments in the medical, aerospace and other fields should be studied for their application to masonry.
