Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to conduct several preliminary experiments to verify calculations made by these investigators that show it to be possible to non-destructively and quantitatively determine hydrogen content in steel and possibly other host materials at the parts per million level (minimum level of from 100 to 1 ppm). The hydrogen analysis is based on the fact that 24 keV neutrons readily penetrate large thicknesses of materials composed mainly of iron with little scattering and the scattering that does occur, is nearly isotropic. However, the presence of a light material (small mass number) such as hydrogen will cause significant scattering of the neutrons in a preferred forward angle, which permits these hydrogen-scattered neutrons to be distinguished from other neutrons by their particular scattering angle and energy. The number of neutrons scattered at angles and energies peculiar to hydrogen will be directly proportional to the concentration of hydrogen in the host material. Thus, the measurement of the number of hydrogen scattered neutrons will permit the quantitative, non-destructive measurement of the hydrogen concentration in test articles or samples and/or whole prototypes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering. For this reason, the articles highlighted in this editorial relate to different aspects of nondestructive testing of different materials in civil engineering—from building materials to building structures. The current trend in the development of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering is mainly concerned with the detection of flaws and defects in concrete elements and structures, and acoustic methods predominate in this field. As in medicine, the trend is towards designing test equipment that allows one to obtain a picture of the inside of the tested element and materials. From this point of view, interesting results with significance for building practices have been obtained

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the hydrogen content in materials is important both for research and for various applications in material and surface sciences, such as hydrogen embrittlement of steel, controlled thermonuclear reaction first wall studies, and changed material properties caused by dissolved hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most difficult atomic species to analyze by traditional methods, but nuclear physics methods are particularly suited for this purpose. President of the Uzbek SSR Academy of Sciences P.K. Khabibullaev and Professor B.G. Skorodumov discuss in this book the characteristics of these methods, such as lower detection limits, selectivity in respect to different isotopes, accuracy, depth resolution and maximum detection depth. Examples of applications that are dealt with include the determination of material humidity, the dating of objects, the study of hydrogen diffusion including non-stationary processes, and the investigation of changes in material properties like superconductivity, plasticity and electrical properties due to contamination by hydrogen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for professional, academic and government analytical chemists. It is a "one-stop-shop" providing an overview and reference source on this subject, which has been growing steadily with outstanding technical developments in recent years. Non-destructive methods are generally nuclear techniques as they depend only on physical properties of the atomic nucleus and do not need the preparation of solutions. However some of the methods as XRF and ICP-MS-LA which depend on the inner electrons or the mass of the atom are also included as they are non-destructive. Non-destructive assays are expanding in the fields of materials, archaeology, biology and the arts. A team of expert authors describes all the major non-destructive methods available to the analyst clearly and concisely. In each case practical examples are used along with detailed coverage of equipment, methodology and underlying theory. In this way readers can gain an appreciation of how day-to-day work is connected to the basic principles.

Book excerpt: This volume (Parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation held at the University of California - San Diego, La Jolla, CA, on August 1-5, 1988. The Review was organized by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory of the U. S. Department of Energy in cooperation with the Air Force Materials Laboratory, the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, the Office of Naval Research, the NASA-Langley Research Center, and The Metallurgical Society (TMS). Yith a total of over 450 participants from the US and nine foreign countries who presented a record 325 papers, this conference has grown into the largest, most significant gathering of NDE researchers and engineers anywhere in the Yest. The meeting was divided into 36 sessions with as many as four sessions running concurrently. All stages of NDE development from basic research investigations to early engineering applications and all methods of inspection science from ultrasonics to x-ray tomography were covered. Following a pattern now familiar to regular attendees of the Review and readers of the Proceedings, the editors have organized the papers in the Proceedings according to topical subject headings rather than the original order of presentation. This rearrangement yields a more user friendly reference work. Part A of the Proceedings treats NDE technique development whereas Part B is organized around the theme of materials.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the main nuclear characterization techniques used to study hydrogen absorption and desorption in materials. The various techniques (neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, ion-beams, positron annihilation spectroscopy) are explained in detail, and a variety of examples of recent research projects are given to show the unique advantage of these techniques to study hydrogen in materials. Most of these nuclear techniques require very specialized instrumentation, and there are only a handful of these instruments available worldwide. Therefore, the aim of this book is to reach out to a readership with a very diverse background in the physical sciences and engineering and a broad range of hydrogen-related research interests. The same technique can be used by researchers interested in the improvement of the performance of hydrogen storage materials and by those focused on hydrogen ingress causing embrittlement of metals. The emphasis of this book is to provide tutorial material on how to use nuclear characterization techniques for the investigation of hydrogen in materials – information that cannot readily be found in conference and regular research papers. Provides a comprehensive overview of nuclear techniques used for hydrogen-related research Explains all nuclear techniques in detail for the non-expert Covers the whole range of hydrogen-related research Features chapters written by world-renowned experts in nuclear technique and hydrogen-related research
