Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of nominals - linguistic expressions whose core constituent is characteristically a noun - is of great interest to both theoretical and computational linguistics. Their internal structure, meaning and use address intriguing issues of semantics and pragmatics that are intrinsically related to syntactic matters. Dimitria Kolliakou provides a detailed description and formal analysis of a wide range of intricate linguistic phenomena concerning nominal constructions in Modern Greek, while exploring the implications of those phenomena for the architecture of grammar both at a theoretical and computational level. In particular, this book supports the integration of semantic and contextual information in the grammar, formalizing it within the multi-dimensional framework of Head-Driven Phase Structure Grammar.

Book excerpt: Based on extensive and diverse material from 70 languages, and covering a range of previously undiscussed problems, this book provides a thorough analysis of how nominalization types interact with other structural features. It focuses on action nominal constructions, and in particular, the comparison of their syntactic structure with that of finite clauses and of other noun phrases, a problem which has claimed much attention in current syntactic theories. Supported by rich empirical material and clearly illustrated with examples from all the sample languages, the book provides a detailed and consistent basis for constructing a typology of derived constructions and for presenting cross-linguistic comparisons.

Book excerpt: English summary: This study explores one of the most salient features of the Modern Greek (MG) syntax, namely the complementation function of the na-clauses. Traditionally, this grammatical structure is seen as a mood category, a part of the verbal paradigm and is designated as a 'subjunctive'. However, in spite of numerous publications dealing with the phenomenon, linguistic scholarship has not yet reached a consensus about the exact syntactic and semantic features of this grammatical construction. In this monograph it is suggested that the na-clauses do constitute a genuine mood category, nevertheless the impressionistic descriptiveness of traditional terminology should be supported by a more systematic and up-to-date semantic and syntactic analysis. The book comprises eight chapters that offer a holistic approach to MG subjunctive complementation. To that end the na-clauses are examined by investigating extensive diachronic, synchronic, and typological data that shed light on this single phenomenon. Diachronically, the rise of the finite complementation in MG in Koine and Early Middle Greek - and the parallel demise of the non-finite verbal categories - is discussed, synchronically the na-clauses are analyzed with regard to their semantic function and exact syntactic properties and typologically the MG na-clause are contrasted with several germane cross-linguistic complementation structures. Despite the major importance of the subjunctive complementation within the MG syntax, this is the first monograph exclusively dedicated to this phenomenon. It aims to provide a precise description of the na-clauses which will be enduring and useful for any future attempt to better comprehend the overall complementation architecture of the Modern Greek language. In terms of methodology, it encompasses findings stemming from the long grammatic tradition on Greek philology, language contact research and state-of-the-art diachronic syntax. This work is a slightly revised version of the author's doctoral thesis which was awarded the Indo-European Society's 2013 prize for best dissertation and will be of interest to historical linguists, syntacticians, typologists as well as classical philologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complement clause is used instead of a noun phrase; for example one can say either I heard [the result] or I heard [that England beat France]. Languages differ in the grammatical properties of complement clauses, and the types of verbs which take them. Some languages lack a complement clause construction but instead employ other construction types to achieve similar ends; these are called complementation strategies. The book explores the variety of types of complementation foundacross the languages of the world, their grammatical properties and meanings. Detailed studies of particular languages, including Akkadian, Israeli, Jarawara, and Pennsylvania German, are framed by R. M. W. Dixon's introduction, which sets out the range of issues, and his conclusion, which drawstogether the evidence and the arguments. This book will interest scholars of typology, language universals, syntax, information structure, and language contact in departments of linguistics and anthropology, as well as advanced and graduate students taking courses in these subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains thirteen studies on various aspects of Greek syntax, as well as a general introduction by the editors. In recent years, the study of Greek has become important for the development of generative theory. The various contributions to this volume demonstrate clearly how much the field of Greek syntax has grown both in range and depth. The topics investigated include the phrase structure of clauses and nominal phrases, clitics in standard Greek and in dialects, the licensing of negative polarity items, the nature of sentential operators, control, argument structure and compounds. The studies highlight the importance of Greek for the development of a satisfactory theory of comparative syntax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of the inflectional middle category in Modern Greek. Against the theoretical backdrop of cognitive linguistics, it is argued that a wide range of seemingly disparate middle structures in Modern Greek comprise a complex semantic network, and that this network is organized around two prototypical middle event types, which are noninitiative emotional response and spontaneous change of state. In those cases where middle structures have active counterparts, middle and active variants of the same verb stem are compared in order to demonstrate more clearly the semantic distinctions and pragmatic functions encoded by inflectional middle voice in Modern Greek. Major semantic groupings of middle structures treated include emotional response in particular and psycho-emotive experience in general, spontaneous change of state and/or the resulting state, agent-induced events in which an agent subject is (emotionally) involved with or affected by some aspect of the designated situation, passive-like events in which a patient subject is affected by a nonfocal agent, implicit or specified, and reflexive-like events in which a patient subject and an unspecified agent may overlap to varying degrees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the core challenges in linguistics is elucidating compounds—their formation as well as the reasons their structure varies between languages. This book on Modern Greek rises to the challenge with a meticulous treatment of its diverse, intricate compounds, a study as grounded in theory as it is rich in data. Enhancing our knowledge of compounding and word-formation in general, its exceptional scope is a worthy model for linguists, particularly morphologists, and offers insights for students of syntax, phonology, dialectology and typology, among others. The author examines first-tier themes such as the order and relations of constituents, headedness, exocentricity, and theta-role saturation. She shows how Modern Greek compounding relates to derivation and inflection, and charts the boundaries between compounds and phrases. Exploring dialectically variant compounds, and identifying historical changes, the analysis extends to similarly formed compounds in wholly unrelated languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assembles contributions addressing clausal complementation across the entire South Slavic territory. The main focus is on particular aspects of complementation, covering the contemporary standard languages as well as older stages and/or non-standard varieties and the impact of language contact, primarily with non-Slavic languages. Presenting in-depth studies, they thus contribute to the overarching collective aim of arriving at a comprehensive picture of the patterns of clausal complementation on which South Slavic languages profile against a wider typological background, but also diverge internally if we look closer at details in the contemporary stage and in diachronic development. The volume divides into an introduction setting the stage for the single case-studies, an article developing a general template of complementation with a detailed overview of the components relevant for South Slavic, studies addressing particular structural phenomena from different theoretical viewpoints, and articles focusing on variation in space and/or time.
