Book excerpt: Most developed countries are struggling to finance first-class health care for everyone in their community, leading to renewed emphasis on appropriate and equitable provision of health care, placing interventions that are both high in volume and expense under the microscope. This book provides readers with an understanding of the key issues that dictate the provision of total hip replacement, one of the most cost-effective procedures available within health care. A highlight of the book is its multinational and multidisciplinary approach presenting perspectives from public health, individual patients and doctors, economists and health care purchasers and managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book allows readers to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of real-world data in pharmacoepidemiology, and highlights the strengths and limitations of the respective databases with regard to pharmacoepidemiological research. Over the past decade, the increasing use of real-world data in pharmacoepidemiological research has been accompanied by a growing recognition of the value of real-world evidence in clinical and regulatory decision-making. Electronic healthcare databases allow analyses of drug and vaccine utilization in routine care after approval, as well as investigations of their comparative effectiveness and safety. They are especially useful for the identification of rare risks and rare drug exposures over long periods of time, and as such sustainably extend the basis for drug safety research. This book provides an introduction to the role of real-world data in pharmacoepidemiological research and the main developments in the last 15 years. It also offers a comprehensive overview of the general classification characteristics of databases, together with their strengths and limitations, and a detailed description of 21 individual databases, written by professionals who work with or maintain them.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress in HLA research achieved in the last decade has been extremely beneficial for understanding of the human genome structure, evolution of human beings and the association between HLA and complex related factors like immune responsiveness and patomechanism of some diseases. It was also found that some HLA specificities may bear a witness not only to a susceptibility to some diseases but also may reflect the ability of the host to mount immune responsiveness. All these achievements enabled successful clinical application of haematopoietic stem cells transplantation. Nowadays, it is apparent that the perfect matching at allele level of HLA specificities constitute the most important factor affecting surviving of patients transplanted from unrelated donors. This is also shown in this volume. To secure reliability of HLA typing , DNA techniques should be implemented and laboratories should comply with requirements expressed by European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) and American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). HLA typing is a complex procedure which should involve internal and external quality controls. Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation may be the best example of introducing modern technologies and very active translation of basic research in the fields of genetics and cell biology into the clinic. Even more impressive is international collaboration in searching for the best possible donor wherever in the world it might be. More than 8 million donors are registered world-wide. There is an ongoing interest in improving the international co-operation in order to secure the best donors for recipients. These chapters are of special interest as the co-operation for donors selection for HSCT is an activity across the oceans.
