Book Synopsis Theoretical and Empirical Issues in Grammaticalization by : Elena Seoane
Download or read book Theoretical and Empirical Issues in Grammaticalization written by Elena Seoane and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume and its companion one"Rethinking grammaticalization: New perspectives" offer a selection of papers from the "Third International Conference New Reflections on Grammaticalization," held at the University of Santiago de Compostela in July 2005. The overall aim of the book is to enrich our understanding of what grammaticalization entails via detailed case studies in combination with theoretical and methodological discussions. Some of the theoretical issues discussed in the sixteen articles included in the volume are the nature of grammaticalization and related processes such as anti-, re- and degrammaticalization, the relationship between grammaticalization and lexicalization, the role of frequency in grammaticalization and the interplay between information structure and grammaticalization. Other topics covered are the grammaticalization of composite predicates in English, the emergence of modal particles in German and particle clusters in Dutch and the grammaticalization of various modal auxiliaries in Spanish and in Swedish.

Book Synopsis Catholics in Indonesia, 1808-1903 by : Karel Steenbrink
Download or read book Catholics in Indonesia, 1808-1903 written by Karel Steenbrink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first of two volumes documents the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Indonesia from 1808, when, after two centuries, priests were again allowed in the Dutch colony, until 1903, when the the number of Catholics, only 27,000 at the time, started to grow spectacularly. The story of slow growth among the indigenous population, with many setbacks, is illustrated by 98 documents, which are included in their complete format and original language (mostly Dutch). Half of the book contains a lenghty introduction in which the history of Catholic missionary effort is spelled out, with, of course, a lot of attention for the islands where the Catholic clergy was actively engaged in proselytizing. This introduction is the first survey in English on the subject.
Download or read book De Republiek van Plato written by Plato and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2023-04-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Coram Deo by : Johanna Van Belle-Praamsma
Download or read book Coram Deo written by Johanna Van Belle-Praamsma and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coram Deo: Before the Face of God is historical fiction. It describes the journey of the Rev. Dr. Louis Praamsma and his wife, Nellie, from their place of birth in The Netherlands to their grave in Canada. It documents the struggle to remain orthodox in a rapidly changing religious climate. It also gives a glimpse of the many issues an immigrant family faced when leaving family and homeland behind, entering a new community, interacting with a different culture, and speaking a second language. It celebrates God's providence, his mercy, and grace for those who love Him. Johanna van Belle-Praamsma was born and raised in The Netherlands. She immigrated to Canada in 1958 with her family. She studied medicine at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands and at the University of Toronto, Ontario where she received her M.D. degree. She practiced college medicine at Florida State University and the University of Washington for more than 35 years. She and her husband make their home in Seattle, WA. U.S.A., where they have raised five children. She is retired and immensely enjoys the gift of nine growing grandchildren. After paying for the costs of producing this book, the proceeds will go to Compassion International. This is in memory of my father and mother who loved children.
Book Synopsis The Eternal Moment and Other Stories by : Edward Morgan Forster
Download or read book The Eternal Moment and Other Stories written by Edward Morgan Forster and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine, if you can, a small room, hexagonal in shape, like the cell of a bee. It is lighted neither by window nor by lamp, yet it is filled with a soft radiance. There are no apertures for ventilation, yet the air is fresh. There are no musical instruments, and yet, at the moment that my meditation opens, this room is throbbing with melodious sounds. An arm-chair is in the centre, by its side a reading-desk—that is all the furniture. And in the arm-chair there sits a swaddled lump of flesh—a woman, about five feet high, with a face as white as a fungus. It is to her that the little room belongs. An electric bell rang. The woman touched a switch and the music was silent. "I suppose I must see who it is," she thought, and set her chair in motion. The chair, like the music, was worked by machinery, and it rolled her to the other side of the room, where the bell still rang importunately. "Who is it?" she called. Her voice was irritable, for she had been interrupted often since the music began. She knew several thousand people; in certain directions human intercourse had advanced enormously. But when she listened into the receiver, her white face wrinkled into smiles, and she said: "Very well. Let us talk, I will isolate myself. I do not expect anything important will happen for the next five minutes—for I can give you fully five minutes, Kuno. Then I must deliver my lecture on 'Music during the Australian Period.'" She touched the isolation knob, so that no one else could speak to her. Then she touched the lighting apparatus, and the little room was plunged into darkness. "Be quick!" she called, her irritation returning. "Be quick, Kuno; here I am in the dark wasting my time." But it was fully fifteen seconds before the round plate that she held in her hands began to glow. A faint blue light shot across it, darkening to purple, and presently she could see the image of her son, who lived on the other side of the earth, and he could see her. "Kuno, how slow you are." He smiled gravely. "I really believe you enjoy dawdling." "I have called you before, mother, but you were always busy or isolated. I have something particular to say." "What is it, dearest boy? Be quick. Why could you not send it by pneumatic post?" "Because I prefer saying such a thing. I want——" "Well?" "I want you to come and see me." Vashti watched his face in the blue plate. "But I can see you!" she exclaimed. "What more do you want?" "I want to see you not through the Machine," said Kuno. "I want to speak to you not through the wearisome Machine." "Oh, hush!" said his mother, vaguely shocked. "You mustn't say anything against the Machine." "Why not?" "One mustn't." "You talk as if a god had made the Machine," cried the other. "I believe that you pray to it when you are unhappy. Men made it, do not forget that. Great men, but men. The Machine is much, but it is not everything. I see something like you in this plate, but I do not see you. I hear something like you through this telephone, but I do not hear you. That is why I want you to come. Come and stop with me. Pay me a visit, so that we can meet face to face, and talk about the hopes that are in my mind."
