Book Synopsis Modern Critical Theory and Classical Literature by : J.P. Sullivan
Download or read book Modern Critical Theory and Classical Literature written by J.P. Sullivan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades the study of literature in Europe and the Americas has been profoundly influenced by modern critical theory in its various forms, whether Structuralism or Deconstructionism, Hermeneutics, Reader-Response Theory or Rezeptionsästhetik, Semiotics or Narratology, Marxist, feminist, neo-historical, psychoanalytical or other perspectives. Whilst the value and validity of such approaches to literature is still a matter of some dispute, not least among classical scholars, they have had a substantial impact on the study both of classical literatures and of the mentalité of Greece and Rome. In an attempt to clarify issues in the debate, the eleven contributors to this volume were asked to produce a representative collection of essays to illustrate the applicability of some of the new approaches to Greek and Latin authors or literary forms and problems. The scope of the volume was deliberately limited to literary investigation, broadly construed, of Greek and Roman authors. Broader areas of the history and culture of the ancient world impinge in the essays, but are not their central focus. The volume also contains a separate bibliography, offering for the first time a complete bibliography of classical studies which incorporate modern critical theory.

Download or read book A Dictionary of Classical Greek Quotations written by Marinos Yeroulanos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Human wisdom is of little or no value', wrote Plato in his Apology. And yet the ancient Greeks, including Plato himself, more than any other people of antiquity were fascinated by the pursuit of the wisdom they called philosophia. That search for knowledge involved an extensive use of maxims and quotations, as we can see from those expressions of Homer prefaced by the phrase 'as people say'. Homer, the Seven Sages and the Pre-Socratic philosophers are still extensively quoted in all the major western languages. Yet for all their popularity, until now there has been no single resource to which interested readers might turn. This unique reference book offers one of the most comprehensive selections of Greek quotations ever committed to print. With its English text matched by the original Greek, the volume collects 7500 entries, ranging from the archaic period to late antiquity, and across philosophy, drama, poetry, history, science and medicine, each indexed with key words to enable fast sourcing. Together, these selections provide an incomparable insight into the glories of Greek civilization.

This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 8884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was an American politician, statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt was a prolific author, writing with passion on subjects ranging from foreign policy to the importance of the national park system. Roosevelt was also an avid reader of poetry. In all, Roosevelt wrote about 18 books (each in several editions), including his autobiography, The Rough Riders, History of the Naval War of 1812, and others on subjects such as ranching, explorations, and wildlife. His most ambitious book was the four volume narrative The Winning of the West, focused on the American frontier in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Roosevelt said that the American character—indeed a new "American race" (ethnic group) had emerged from the heroic wilderness hunters and Indian fighters, acting on the frontier with little government help. Download or read book Proverbs to Live By written by Dr. Harry Heinrichs and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That we live in the Information Age is fairly evident to most. One estimate claims that on an overall average, available information is doubling every year. By comparison, it would seem at times that the rate of wisdom increase is almost stagnant. Yet for purposes of daily living, wisdom is much more important and beneficial than raw knowledge. Proverbs is the Bible’s central book of wisdom, and in the New Testament, James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who give generously to all.” Much of that wisdom is found in the pages of Proverbs, and this book, Proverbs to Live By, examines a different wise saying every day of the year.
