Book Synopsis The Problem Of The Soul by : Owen Flanagan
Download or read book The Problem Of The Soul written by Owen Flanagan and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science has always created problems for traditional ways of seeing things, but now the very attributes that make us human -- free will, the permanence of personal identity, the existence of the soul -- are threatened by the science of the mind. If the mind is the brain, and therefore a physical object subject to deterministic laws, how can we have free will? If most of our thoughts and impulses are unconscious, how can we be morally responsible for what we do? If brains and bodies undergo relentless change, how can our identities be constant? The Problem of the Soul shows the way out of these paradoxes. Framing the conflict in terms of two dominant visions of the mind -- the "manifest image" of humanistic philosophy and theology, and the scientific image -- Owen Flanagan demonstrates that there is common ground, and that we need not give up our ideas of moral responsibility and personal freedom in order to have an empirically sound view of the human mind. This is a profoundly relevant work of philosophy for the common reader.

Book Synopsis Things I've Learned About Children by : Mark Givens
Download or read book Things I've Learned About Children written by Mark Givens and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Things I've Learned About Children" is a collection of articles that appeared in MungBeing Magazine from 2010 to 2015. The theme of each issue is mentioned once or twice but the important thing is that as these articles were written, the babies were not neglected or harmed in any way. What I find interesting is that several of the lessons are repeated again and again, either as a reminder or because I didn't actually learn it the first time around. Such is the nature of baby-raising, I guess. Most of all, I hope you enjoy reading these things and that this collection becomes the most important guidebook in raising your own children.

Book Synopsis Developmental Genetics by : Billie Wilson
Download or read book Developmental Genetics written by Billie Wilson and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2018-04-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental Genetics studies how the genes regulate developmental changes in behavior and influence scientific approaches in several fields. Genetics is the study of heredity. Heredity is a biological process where a parent passes certain genes onto their children or offspring. Every child inherits genes from both of their biological parents and these genes in turn express specific traits. Some of these traits may be physical for example hair and eye color and skin color etc. On the other hand some genes may also carry the risk of certain diseases and disorders that may pass on from parents to their offspring. Development is behind what one looks like. It is directed by genes, the units of heredity, which are made up of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in all animals (including man), plants, microorganisms and most of the viruses except in some viruses where Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) is the genetic material. Developmental Genetics integrates the two disciplines of development and genetics into one. Differential gene expression from genetically identical nuclei creates different cell types. Differential gene expression can occur at the levels of gene transcription, nuclear RNA processing, mRNA translation, and protein modification. Genes are usually repressed. Activation of a gene often means inhibiting its repressor. This leads to thinking in double and triple negatives: Activation is often the inhibition of the inhibitor; repression is the inhibition of the inhibitor of the inhibitor. Besides useful to the students and teachers of the subject the book will also serve as a reference tool to the researchers in genetics developmental biology regenerative medicine and cell biology.
