Book excerpt: An urgent manifesto and a dramatic memoir of awakening, this is the story of revolutionary love. Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize • “In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur—renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer—describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know. Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change: It is a practice that can transform a relationship, a community, a culture, even a nation. Kaur takes readers through her own riveting journey—as a brown girl growing up in California farmland finding her place in the world; as a young adult galvanized by the murders of Sikhs after 9/11; as a law student fighting injustices in American prisons and on Guantánamo Bay; as an activist working with communities recovering from xenophobic attacks; and as a woman trying to heal from her own experiences with police violence and sexual assault. Drawing from the wisdom of sages, scientists, and activists, Kaur reclaims love as an active, public, and revolutionary force that creates new possibilities for ourselves, our communities, and our world. See No Stranger helps us imagine new ways of being with each other—and with ourselves—so that together we can begin to build the world we want to see.

Book excerpt: The American Dream is a set of ideals in which freedom included the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility achieved through hard work. This is the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. One of my favorite Chapters in the Bible is Romans 13 "Love fulfills the law."... "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. How does this impact your thoughts and actions? Cammy and I had a childless home. So we asked God for what He could do to fill our lives with joy and hope. He provided us a home to love parentless children? Today, I woke up in my hospital bed suffering from Acute Congestive Heart and Kidney Failure. I am still recovering from a Disc replacement and Fusion surgery at L-4-L5 in which I suffer from Stenosis and L-5 Nerve Root damage which has left me in a Wheel Chair. And I still find myself asking God to help me with the void of not having my own children. So I wrote a book about our story to encourage other childless families, that their love is needed and wanted by children who believe in God, and are trapped inside the US Foster Care System. And to let other Christian Families know that there are children stuck in the Foster care system that can be adapted by loving and caring Christian parents.

Book excerpt: "Here are the stories of a world-class surgeon who has been on the frontlines of medicine for over fifty years. In a candid, moving, and often funny memoir from behind the surgeon's mask, he recounts episodes in a life that stretches from his roots on the Lower East Side of New York City to the glittering international worlds of science and the arts." "A family tragedy touched off the young Cahan's desire to be a doctor. He studied at Harvard, expanded his experience in the Air Corps during World War II, and ultimately joined the renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. While his training introduced him to medicine's underworld of anti-Semitism, he emerged from it with a strong will to succeed and with an obsession to conquer cancer, which he calls the "ancient, guile-ridden, unsentimental" disease. In addition to developing innovations in surgical techniques, he detected a connection between exposure to radiation and cancer that led him to become a lifelong sleuth in the mysterious realm of carcinogens - and the tobacco industry's fiercest enemy." "Always, however, at the heart of his work are his patients. He movingly describes the intense and delicate doctor-patient relationship, which, although often too full of heartbreaks, frustrations, and failed dreams, is also marked by triumphs that testify to the curative power of sustained optimism and hope." "Dr. Cahan writes engagingly of the people in his life. Married first to the daughter of the legendary stage star Gertrude Lawrence, and now to Grace Mirabella, publication director of the magazine that bears her name, Dr. Cahan has counted among his friends and/or patients such well-known personalities as Alan Jay Lerner, Leonard Bernstein, Anthony Eden, Mario Lanza, Yul Brynner, Babe Paley, Melvyn Douglas, Hubert Humphrey, and Babe Ruth." "This book is also the story of Dr. Cahan's two sons: Chris, who chose a different career as a television producer, and Anthony, who followed in his father's footsteps but created an identity all his own." "The education of more than one surgeon is told here, drawing the reader into the operating room, the lab, the thinking, the politics, and especially the heart of medicine."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Vera Caspary, the famed author of Laura, gives us another gripping crime drama, told through shifting points of view. John Ansell, young and idealistic editor of Truth and Crime magazine, wants to breathe new life into the stale and formulaic publication. Instead of rehashing a story that’s already been proven popular elsewhere, he finds a fresh one: the murder of Warren G. Wilson, famed figurehead of a correspondence course. The murder itself isn’t too remarkable—just a bullet in the back—but the victim is another case, as it becomes apparent that despite having a household name, nothing is known about him. Perhaps even more peculiar is how Ansell’s boss absolutely refuses to run the story and, soon thereafter, Ansell is poisoned. Caspary masterfully allows the truth to slowly untangle in this incredibly woven mystery, finally available as an ebook.

Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the 20th century, as told from the furthest fringes of science, art and culture. For readers of Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. Before 1900, history was an account of great discoveries that actually made sense. People understand innovations like the steam engine, agriculture, or electricity. The twentieth century, by contrast, gave us quantum entanglement, cubism, relativity, psychedelics, postmodernism, chaos maths, and the Somme. This is the story of that confusing century as told through the ideas produced at the furthest fringes of our sciences, arts, and culture. Its cast includes well-known geniuses such as Albert Einstein, Francis Crick, and Pablo Picasso, lesser known geniuses like Edward Lorenz, Sergey Korolyov, or Shigeru Miyamoto, and infamous but influential ne'er-do-wells like Timothy Leary, Aleister Crowley and Keith Richards. In this company we take a tour through ideas as strange as general relativity, DNA, the subconscious, Gaia theory, and Dada. In this brilliantly written and original book, John Higgs explores, with great clarity and wit, the extremes of twentieth century thought, and in doing so shows how a world of empires became a world of individuals. You will never see the twentieth century in the same way again.

Book excerpt: From his first unscripted appearance on an Off-Broadway stage in the revolutionary 1960s to the frontpage news of his death from AIDS in 1987 at age 44, Charles Ludlam embodied - and helped to engender - the upheavals of his time. The astonishing life and legacy of this force to be reckoned with are at last revealed in RIDICULOUS!, a literary biography of an American comic genius. After founding the Ridiculous Theatrical Company in 1967, Ludlam sustained an ever-shifting troupe of bohemian players through two decades of perennially daunting circumstances by writing 29 plays - plays that he starred in and directed as well. While Ludlam's work has become increasingly popular at regional theatres, on college campuses, and on stages throughout the world, his gender-bending theories and wide-ranging cultural impact have reached far beyond Bette Midler, the original cast members of Saturday Night Live and the countless other artists he influenced during his abbreviated lifetime. Like his early plays, Ludlam's life was rife with the sex, drugs and creative experimentation that characterized the freewheeling '60s and '70s. Based on a decade of research and interviews with more than 150 people who knew or worked with Ludlam - including all of the major players in his troupe and seven of his lovers - RIDICULOUS! recreates the dramatic life of an inimitable and subversive theatrical master with you-are-there intensity. Winner of the LAMBDA Literary Award for Biography and the Theatre Library Association Award for Outstanding Theatre Book of the Year "David Kaufman makes a persuasive case for Ludlam's being a genius ... As a record of Ludlam's life and the theatrical world in which he was both guru and grandmaster, this book is informed and passionate." - Mel Gussow, The New York Times "A fascinating portrait of an authentic stage genius and the New York avant-garde scene in which he toiled with such demented and dedicated diligence." - Playbill "The phenom who inspired everyone from Bette Midler and Madeline Kahn to Tony Kushner and Paul Rudnick was no box of chocolates - which, as reading experiences go, makes his story all the sweeter." - Vanity Fair "This is one helluva piece of work." - Marilyn Stasio, Variety.com

Book excerpt: This instant #1 New York Times bestseller and “modern techno-thriller” (New York Journal of Books) follows Mitch Rapp in a race to prevent Russia’s gravely ill leader from starting a full-scale war with NATO. When Russian president Maxim Krupin discovers that he has inoperable brain cancer, he’s determined to cling to power. His first task is to kill or imprison any of his countrymen who can threaten him. Soon, though, his illness becomes serious enough to require a more dramatic diversion—war with the West. Upon learning of Krupin’s condition, CIA director Irene Kennedy understands that the US is facing an opponent who has nothing to lose. The only way to avoid a confrontation that could leave millions dead is to send Mitch Rapp to Russia under impossibly dangerous orders. With the Kremlin’s entire security apparatus hunting him, he must find and kill a man many have deemed the most powerful in the world. Success means averting a war that could consume all of Europe. But if his mission is discovered, Rapp will plunge Russia and America into a conflict that neither will survive in “a timely, explosive novel that shows yet again why Mitch Rapp is the best hero the thriller genre has to offer” (The Real Book Spy).
