His premature birth prevented him from bonding with his mother at an early age. His older sister paved the way for how Robert would be raised as her “little sister.” Many years of pain and suffering at the hands of his bullies ensued. It wasn’t until his discovery of heavy metal rock music that Robert found a way out of his chains. Rock music became his religion. It gave him the strength, the courage, and the self-confidence to take back control of his life and to control his own destiny. As the years passed, the transition from a good little boy to an out-of-control teenager was set in motion. This is not your typical coming-of-age story. Robert truly was a youth gone wild! All boundaries were shattered. Nothing was off-limits. Along with his cast of characters, he would blaze a path of “creative” mayhem second to none.

Book excerpt: Chock-full of jokes and entertaining twists of the tongue, this lighthearted but scholarly guide to humorous language is a sure?re hit with word lovers. The examples are entertainingly bawdy, with a delightful narrative voice in word sleuth and author, Jim Bernhard. He provides examples and puzzles, teaching a smidgen of historical and etymological scholarship, but above all, amusing his audience. Puns from Greek dramatists, Shakespeare, the Bible, George S. Kaufman, and Groucho Marx vie for attention with comical spoonerisms, droll malapropisms, witty anagrams, and humorous palindromes—plus original material by the author—including limericks, clerihews, crossword puzzles, acrostic puzzles, tonguetwisters, and other kinds of word play. Some examples: Why does a match box? Because it sees a tin can. Time ?ies like an arrow. Fruit ?ies like a banana. The pony was unable to talk because he was a little hoarse. Two peanuts went into a bar. One was a salted. The chicken that crossed the road was pure poultry in motion. As the gardener said when asked why he was cutting grass with a pair of scissors: “That’s all there is; there isn’t any mower.”

Book excerpt: Is there a better phrase to start a story than "No Shit, There I Was..."? If you hear someone start with that phrase, you know it's going to be worth listening carefully. That's how all the craziest - and most interesting - stories start. And then we turned a bunch of speculative fiction authors loose on that phrase.

Book excerpt: With humor and a modern perspective, young conservative journalist Kristin Tate points out what's broken in our government and shows readers how they can fix it. Do you really think you're "free?" #LOL. D.C. politicians ship our friends and family overseas to fight in wars we shouldn't be fighting. They monitor our emails, record our phone calls, and peer into our snail mail. They spend our hard-earned cash on things no disciplined family would buy. They tell us who we can marry and what we can put in our bodies. They throw us in overcrowded prisons for smoking pot. They take lavish trips around the world, staying in five-star hotels. . . and it comes straight out of our paychecks. This isn't freedom. Government Gone Wild is a brash, bold ride through the carnival of absurdities that our broken system has become. This isn't about Democrats vs. Republicans. . . it's about inspiring hard working Americans to give a damn so we can take our country back. This is your wakeup call. You're not anywhere near as free as you think you are -- but you can be. We're not as prosperous as we once were -- but we can be.

I know, I assure him. I have the kids. They need me. They're my life now. "OK," he replies, then grunts—more of a brief hum. He only hums when he thinks I'm full of shit. Shockingly single. Amy Biancolli's life went off script more dramatically than most after her husband of twenty years jumped off the roof of a parking garage. Left with three children, a three-story house, and a pile of knotty psychological complications, Amy realizes the flooding dishwasher, dead car battery, rapidly growing lawn, basement sump pump, and broken doorknob aren't going to fix themselves. She also realizes that "figuring shit out" means accepting the horrors that came her way, rolling with them, slogging through them, helping others through theirs, and working her way through life with love and laughter. Amy Biancolli is an author and journalist whose column appears in the Albany Times Union. Before that, Amy served as film critic for the Houston Chronicle where her reviews, published around the country, won her the 2007 Comment and Criticism Award from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association. Biancolli is the author of House of Holy Fools: A Family Portrait in Six Cracked Parts, which earned her Albany Author of the Year. Amy lives in Albany, New York, with her three children.

Book excerpt: In 1971, a man calling himself D.B. Cooper hijacked a flight, claimed his ransom without harming a soul, and vanished. Elwood Reid uses this true story as a starting point, imagining Cooper as Phil Fitch, a Vietnam vet with a failed marriage who decides the time has come to do something that will save him from a life of punching timecards and wondering what could have been. Fitch ends up in Mexico, where he drifts until a bad turn of luck forces him to return home. Meanwhile, newly retired FBI agent Frank Marshall is struggling with his new life of leisure–fishing, spending time with family, and drinking too much. Unable to let go of a few old cases, Marshall decides to help a young agent determined to solve the mystery of D. B. Cooper. As they close in and events bring Fitch back home, these two stories head for a moving climax in a smart, gripping, and frequently hilarious tale of one of America’s modern folk heroes.

Book excerpt: Their first hit single. His first betrayal. And two women that make Randy question everything he’s ever wanted. Randy Jackson loves his life. He’s got a beautiful, hard-working celebrity wife, and a rising musical career as the lead guitarist in a band that just signed their first record deal. He has a great dog, and the best relationships with his band members, namely his stepbrother, who is the lead vocalist. Little clues pass by him that things aren’t quite as hunky-dorey as they may seem, but Randy’s rose-colored glasses currently blind him. Darrell Tanner loves her job as a video editor for the music industry. She’s met all types of musicians that adorn the face of MTV, but none ever appreciate her hard work until the boys from Brave Face appear. Darrell is suddenly treated like royalty, and she basks in the accoutrements in a dream-like state, forgetting about her second-class boss who spends more time on vacation than he does in the office. But one day she realizes that she’s taken things too far, and it’s too late to do anything about it. Can she walk away and leave the best thing that’s ever happened to her? Randy’s wake-up call comes like a bat out of hell, and when he least expects it. The only thing that has kept his focus in such a tumultuous industry is the one thing that he’s about to lose for good, and the worst part is, he has to be the one to walk away from it. Until someone he least expects breaks his fall, and everyone else sees it coming, including Randy…but is he too jaded to do anything about it? A beautiful love story about survival in a tough industry that labels and points fingers in all directions at undeserving people, and the lies that they tell to get ahead under the spotlight. This is a rock star romance that underscores the betrayal that exists in Hollywood, and how stars either sink or swim through it, just like the rest of the world does. This book, like all others in this series, is a standalone, and can be enjoyed in any sequence. Book excerpt: “A Winner . . . Blood Tide is the best high-adventure escape I’ve taken in years.” —Elmore Leonard In the tradition of Clive Cussler and Alistair MacLean, Blood Tide is a gripping novel of betrayal and revenge set in a remote and lawless corner of the Philippines. Unjustly blamed for a failed escape attempt from a North Vietnamese prison, James Culdee, a career US Navy noncom who has served his country with distinction for twenty years, is suddenly and unfairly forced into a disgraceful retirement. Devestated, Culdee retreats into alcoholism until he is rescued by his daughter, Miranda, a charter-boat skipper whose sloop, the Seamark, has been stolen. When Miranda learns that the Seamark has been sighted into the dangerous and primitive Flyaway Islands of the Philippines, father and daughter sail off in pursuit, on a voyage that will carry them across the Pacific. Arriving in the Flyaways, where local pirates and drug smugglers are as treacherous as the hidden shoals and reefs, Culdee and Miranda join a band of Filipinio insurgents plotting to overthrow a tyrannical American drug lord, who may or may not be the same “slimy” who betrayed Culdee in Vietnam. Filled with action, suspense, and nautical lore, Blood Tide is a tale of intrigue, courage, and passion—of a father and a daughter’s battle against overwhelming odds in infernal jungles where murder is a sport and madness a way of life. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. They Are “Accentuate the Positive”: And what do you suppose happens when the college gets accredited by professors like Dr. Lafcadia Weltgeist? “Homecoming”: You wonder, “Now What?” as the Nazi-brownshirt searches for you and your mother who are hiding in a closet. “Just Another Day At The Office”: With the storm raging full force and the electricity off all over campus, how are you going to get those two students out of that in-between floors stuck elevator? “Memories of Brooklyn”: When first coming to America, they lived in Brooklyn. Wonderful memories – Dewey Junior High, yo-yo's, handball, Red Barber and the Brooklyn Dodgers, sewing shoulder pads, not to forget the girls jumping rope: “Lulu had a baby- She named him Tiny Tim- Put him in a . . . . pot, to teach him how to swim.” “Norm”: Nobody works harder or longer than Norm as he tells us what he thinks go into making “a really good man.” “Madera”: The family decides to move from New York to Madera, California, so that Father can have a bookkeeping job at $80 a month and a house for his family to live in free. “The Marimba Band”: “Now What?” when there is a ton of opposition to a tiny one-unit class for students who want to play in a marimba band? “If Music Be The Food Of Love, Play On” says William Shakespeare. But if, while you and your fellow musicians are playing, the family that lives right above you lowers a Nazi flag so that the huge swastika in its center is right in the middle of your front window, “Now What?” “Chris” is an art teacher already very much against the war in Vietnam. One night, he has his students launch balloons with anti-war propaganda on them. And that upsets just about everybody. “Become a 'Late Bloomer' Like It Says in the Brochure”: Paul, who's been a severe stutterer for 36 years, takes Mr. Purcell's English class and gets so mad at him, that for the first time in his whole life, he starts talking.

Book excerpt: The book details the adventures of the eldest son of a working-class family from the urban Midwest who enters the army in the late 1960s and is transformed from a naive cowboy idolizer into a devious, larcenous, gun-carrying reprobate. He delves into the world of black market activities, prostitutes, drugs, and race relations and emerges a callous man for whom death is divided into two basic classes: bodies that are sent away and those that are dismissed as the impersonal enemy. Raised in an all-white environment and having had only one long-term exposure to a person of color, during a short period attending a seminary, he was taught to treat others fairly or to ignore them if their behavior warranted it. In the army, he encounters young men from every part of the country. Some require special treatment, while others introduce him to layers of the spectrum of life, which he did not know existed. He receives specialized training and, instead of being sent directly to Vietnam, is dispatched to Germany to participate in the Cold War in a very active manner. While in the army from 1967 to 1970, he wrote over five hundred letters, many to a girl with whom relations ended upon his return from Vietnam. She gave all the letters back, and they stayed on a shelf, waiting to fulfill the promise to someday write a book about the things that happened. His father also returned the letters that were written to him, which described the language used, the abuse suffered, and the status of race and homosexual relations, as well as the horrors of war, in no uncertain terms. The letters remained untouched for nearly fifty years, but he would sometimes recount an incident to friends or family, receiving in return an urging to write the stories for them. His older daughter chronologically organized the letters, while his other daughter edited the manuscript as it was being written. The idea to write this book, as well as its title, struck while joking with fellow GI’s in the barracks about someday telling the world that no one would believe the things they were doing in the name of serving their country. They would develop audacious pranks to outdo one another or minimalize a situation and just be glad to live another day. They often remarked about spending parents’ and grandparents’ tax money on atrocious wastes of effort and material. The military personnel during the late ’60s fit three distinct categories: juicers, heads, and straights. The first included men from every state, since almost everyone drank now and then. The second referred to the use of acid by some, while smokers and dopers fit right in. Lastly, there were some individuals who preferred not to get wasted by any means. Homosexuals and blacks could occupy any of the groups. The story details army life for a middle-class Midwest man who is introduced to conditions and concepts he had never imagined in Europe, then in the States, and finally in Vietnam. The intended audience is adult, mostly because of the language and the portrayal of man’s cruelty to man, while on the other hand, the book is both nostalgic as well as informative.
