Download or read book Pax Romana written by Adrian Goldsworthy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading ancient world historian and author of Caesar presents “an engrossing account of how the Roman Empire grew and operated” (Kirkus). Renowned for his biographies of Julius Caesar and Augustus, Adrian Goldsworthy turns his attention to the Roman Empire as a whole during its height in the first and second centuries AD. Though this time is known as the Roman Peace, or Pax Romana, the Romans were fierce imperialists who took by force vast lands stretching from the Euphrates to the Atlantic coast. The Romans ruthlessly won peace not through coexistence but through dominance; millions died and were enslaved during the creation of their empire. Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered, examining why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

Book Synopsis Journal of a Tour in Italy, in 1850 by : George Townsend
Download or read book Journal of a Tour in Italy, in 1850 written by George Townsend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Church of England clergyman and biblical scholar, George Townsend (1788-1857) gained recognition for preparing chronological arrangements of both the Old and New Testament. First published in 1850, the present work is an intriguing account of his journey to Italy for an audience with Pope Pius IX, whom he intended to convert to Protestantism. Townsend's journal features details of his stay in Paris, where he was received by the city's archbishop, as well as remarks on the churches and clergy he encountered along the way. In Rome and the Vatican, he visited the main sites of interest while commenting on points of doctrinal divergence and the hospitality shown towards him. Warmly received by Pius IX, who chose to interpret the visit as ecumenical, Townsend inevitably failed in his ultimate objective. Tendentious and forthright, his work sheds light on a strain of English anti-Catholicism.
Book Synopsis No Peace Without Prayer by : Timothy Wright
Download or read book No Peace Without Prayer written by Timothy Wright and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abbot Timothy Wright proposes sowing a small seed from which might grow a greater respect between the world's two largest religions, Christianity and Islam. Indeed, he believes that the seed has been already planted. Christians give unique value to their revealed Scriptures as the 'Word of God'. Muslims speak of the Qur'an as God speaking to them. In No Peace without Prayer, Wright presents the case to establish groups of Christians and Muslims dedicated to sharing their respective Divine Word in ways that enhance the "other" to gain a greater mutual understanding. The key word, says Wright, is partnership, arising from their shared belief in the One God, creator of the universe, communicating with the human world and merciful to the repentant."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis The Temple of Peace in Rome by : Pier Luigi Tucci
Download or read book The Temple of Peace in Rome written by Pier Luigi Tucci and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 1142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magisterial two-volume book, Pier Luigi Tucci offers a comprehensive examination of one of the key complexes of Ancient Rome, the Temple of Peace. Based on archival research and an architectural survey, his research sheds new light on the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque transformations of the basilica, and the later restorations of the complex. Volume 1 focuses on the foundation of the complex under Vespasian until its restoration under Septimius Severus and challenges the accepted views about the ancient building. Volume 2 begins with the remodelling of the library hall and the construction of the rotunda complex, and examines the dedication of the Christian Basilica of SS Cosmas and Damian. Of interest to scholars in a range of topics, The Temple of Peace in Rome crosses the boundaries between classics, archaeology, history of architecture, and art history, through Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the early modern period.
