Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This consultation paper is based on the reforms proposed by David Freud in his report "Reducing dependency, increasing opportunity: options for the future of welfare to work" (2007, DWP, www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/dwp/2007/welfarereview.pdf). The Government's vision for the welfare state is one where no one is written off and everyone is required to fulfil their responsibilities to prepare for, look for and take up work, with support provided at all stages. The reforms are designed to achieve an active and personalised welfare state, boosting employment and tackling long-term benefit dependency. Disabled persons or people with long-term health conditions will be targeted, in a bid to reduce the number of people on incapacity benefits by one million. A new Work Capability Assessment will re-assess all existing incapacity benefits claimants for eligibility to the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - to ensure they are receiving the right benefit and their personal needs are identified. ESA will be a temporary benefit for most, as people recover from or adapt to their condition and prepare for a return to work. Private and voluntary sector providers will be eligible to undertake support work. The medical assessment procedure will be reviewed. The reforms also tackle child poverty by providing additional support while strengthening parents' responsibilities to contribute financially and emotionally to their children's upbringing. The benefits system will be streamlined: a long term goal is the abolition of Income Support and the creation of a system based on Jobseeker's Allowance and the ESA. The Government also wishes to devolve more power to individual customers, local partnerships and providers to improve the quality and effectiveness of services. Providers will have greater freedom to innovate and deliver services through a new "Right to Bid" process.

It is here, in Dayville, Vermont, that Claire’s moral values and ethics are turned upside down with the onslaught of her predecessor’s mysterious disappearance and the several subsequent murders of friends and co-workers. Claire struggles with the loss of those dearest to her, while learning the hard lesson of not knowing which friends she can really trust. Her dilemma is made even worse by having a difficult and unreasonable boss, by the demands of her job, and by the eventual threats on her own life. Salisbury’s first novel leads us on a journey of intrigue and suspense as she explores the personalities and motives behind white collar crime and the several possible candidates guilty of Dayville’s alarming number of murders, while weaving a tale of romance, love, and suspicion amongst the staff of a private girls’ boarding school

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinarily, things do not happen the way we want them to happen. They do happen the way they happen not because we want them to happen that way but because that’s the way things happen. We loathe letting things happen in any other way other than how we want them to happen. Most of us do not have the time to take a look at ourselves. We do not have time to ‘see’ ourselves. This book is for encouraging ourselves to look for the specific purpose of looking to see even the unseen. Because we fail to see—to know—and do not care to understand the existential meaning and ontic purpose of the mode-of-being-in-the-world, we lose our mooring and start practicing undesirable ways of living. Some turn into self-praisers, some get busy creating victims and programing them, ignoring and denying the ever-present sufficiency of peace and love—being blind to it. “A great take away from this book is that meaningful reflections are within touching distance of everyone one of us; we do not have to be professional or trained philosophers to embark on it.” — Rev. (Dr) Valson Thampu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspiring collection of fifty-one sermons on Romans, Fleming Rutledge presents afresh the radical gospel of Paul. Countering the widespread suspicion that Paul somehow complicated Jesus' simple teachings, Rutledge shows how Paul actually makes explicit what is implicit in the Gospel narratives and reveals "the full dimensions of God's project to reclaim the cosmos and everything in it for himself." With her stirring words and joyful delving into Romans passages, Rutledge leads readers to refocus their eyes and ears on Paul's valuable teachings. She unpacks major ideas and motifs in the epistle, including the cross and resurrection of Christ as the first event of the age to come, faith as the human response ignited by the fire of the Word and the Holy Spirit, and God's work of salvation as all-encompassing and incomparable. Her Not Ashamed of the Gospel will be a help to preachers and an encouragement to listeners.

Book excerpt: Written by an American woman who resides and teaches in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, these informal sketches of life in the Gulf capture the flavor of that exotic corner of the Arab world. Even as she acquaints us with intriguing aspects of Emirati culture, the author notes the varied difficulties inherent in perceiving another way of life, especially one that has been ignored and frequently misrepresented in the West. She provides a unique view of the diverse ways in which American pop culture affects Middle Eastern thought and custom, from shopping and song to fashion and fads. Keenly observed and graced with wit and authority, these essays offer a palpable picture of a place little known to the West while raising substantial questions about the essence of culture and the stereotyping of people and places. Off the Beaten Track will be vastly useful to teachers of Middle East studies and those who have contact with non-Western students. Readers interested in the region and travel aficionados will find it an enlightening and highly original read.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government referred proposals concerning the draft Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 to the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) on 1 October 2008. These regulations will implement the Government's proposals to introduce an enhanced regime for those claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). This will include implementing the Flexible New Deal (FND) as a new employment programme for those who claim the benefit for a year, or after six months for those assessed as having greatest need of help to find work. The Committee's report gives broad support to elements of the revised Jobseekers Regime and the Flexible New Deal, but also expresses a number of concerns about the proposals, and makes eight recommendations. These fall under four broad headings: the extension of conditionality; the speed of the rollout of the full programme; the contracting out of services; and the changed economic situation. The Government sets out its response to the Committee's concerns, and has decided to proceed with the proposals as laid out in the Regulations originally referred to the Committee on 1 October 2008.
